Chrome bookmarks that seem to disappear are often hidden in a folder, attached to a different Chrome profile, or saved only on another device—not necessarily erased. First open More > Bookmarks and lists > Show all bookmarks and inspect the folders. Then check the active profile and Google Account before trying recovery steps that change files.
Check whether the bookmarks are hidden or actually missing
Open More > Bookmarks and lists > Show all bookmarks and inspect the folders in the side panel. A missing bookmarks bar does not by itself mean the bookmarks were deleted; they may be elsewhere in the bookmark list. See Google’s instructions for finding bookmarks in Chrome.
Check the Chrome profile and Google Account
Confirm the active profile
Select the profile icon in Chrome and make sure you are using the profile where you saved the bookmarks. Chrome profiles can keep browsing information separate, so a work profile and a personal profile may show different bookmark sets.

Check which account stores your Chrome data
On desktop, open Settings > You and Google and check the account shown. Select the account name to review what information is saved in the Google Account. Chrome can make saved bookmarks available on devices signed into that same account, but signing into Chrome now does not establish that an older local bookmark set was synced.

Google states: “When you sign out of Chrome, bookmarks and other info are saved only on your device, not in your Google Account.” If you have another device already signed into the expected account, check its bookmarks before changing sync settings. Google documents storing up to 100,000 bookmarks in an account; that is a published storage limit, not proof that your particular bookmarks were saved there or can be recovered. Look for an exported bookmarks file
If you previously exported bookmarks, the HTML file may be a recoverable copy. Chrome’s documented export and import paths are:

- To export a set that is currently visible, open More > Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark Manager > More > Export Bookmarks, then save the HTML file.
- To import a saved copy, open More > Bookmarks and lists > Import bookmarks and settings and select the HTML file.
- After importing, inspect the bookmark folders. Imported bookmarks may appear under Other bookmarks; Chromebook instructions describe an Imported folder in one case.

Windows: treat the local backup-file method as a cautious last check
A Chrome Community Diamond Product Expert has described checking the Windows Default-profile folder %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser DataDefault for files named Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak. This is community advice, not an official Chrome recovery procedure. It may not apply to another profile, operating system, Chrome version, or cause of data loss, and it is not guaranteed to work. If you decide to try that method, reduce the chance of making matters worse:
- Close Chrome completely.
- Copy both
BookmarksandBookmarks.bakto a safe location before renaming or replacing anything. - Only proceed if you have identified the correct profile folder. The path above refers specifically to the Windows Default profile.
- If you are unsure which file is current or how to restore it, stop rather than overwrite the only remaining copy.
Once you find the right set, make a backup
Use Chrome’s built-in Export Bookmarks command to create an HTML copy, then keep a second copy somewhere separate, such as removable storage. This protects a set you have successfully exported; it cannot recover bookmarks that are already missing.

What if none of these checks finds the bookmarks?
The official Chrome instructions cover account storage, viewing bookmarks, and HTML import and export, but do not establish a way to restore an individual account’s deleted or overwritten bookmark history. If the bookmarks are absent from the correct profile, other devices, any exported HTML file, and any applicable local copy, the sources cited here do not provide a guaranteed recovery path. Avoid assuming that turning on sync will recreate data that was never saved to the account.
