Apple’s late arrival could be an advantage if the iPhone Duo’s hardware and software work together to address foldables’ persistent complaints. But a launch announcement cannot prove that the phone is more durable or satisfying than established rivals. Apple has entered with a coordinated design; whether waiting paid off will depend on real-world use and long-term results.

What Apple launched—and what it says the design is meant to solve

Apple announced the book-style iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. It has a 5.4-inch outer display for use when closed and a 7.6-inch inner display when opened. Apple describes the inner display’s nano-texture surface as reducing glare and reflections while minimizing crease visibility. The company also cites high-strength glass layers, adhesives intended to relieve bending stress, a titanium plate, a hinge with more than 100 components, and an IP68 rating. These are Apple’s product descriptions and specifications, not independent evidence of long-term durability. Apple’s announcement provides the full details.

The combination matters more than any one component. A foldable has to work as a compact phone when shut and as a larger canvas when open, while its display, hinge, materials, and software handle repeated changes in shape. Apple’s announcement presents those elements as one design effort. It does not establish that the effort has solved crease or reliability concerns.

Where a later start could help Apple

A more deliberate answer to familiar complaints

Apple entered a category where crease visibility, bulk, and durability are already central design challenges. Its stated emphasis on minimizing the crease and managing bend stress suggests it can target those concerns directly rather than treating folding as novelty alone. Tom’s Guide reporter Mark Spoonauer said that during launch-period hands-on time, “you can barely see the crease.” That is one journalist’s initial observation, not a controlled test or a conclusion about how the display will look after extensive use. Tom’s Guide’s interview and hands-on report also includes Apple CEO John Ternus’s explanation of the company’s thinking.

Hardware and software designed together

Apple says iOS 27 adapts its interface as the phone folds and adds Split View for running two apps side by side. It names Netflix, Zoom, and Slack among the third-party apps taking advantage of the larger display. This coordination could make the inner screen more useful than a larger display that apps do not meaningfully support. That is an inference from the announced features, not yet a proven advantage across everyday tasks or the wider app ecosystem.

Ternus described Apple’s decision in terms of its product bar: “I think for us, it’s always about when do we feel like we have a product idea that meets our bar for quality and durability but also design?” He also called the Duo an example of “hardware and software coming together to make something really special.” Those remarks explain Apple’s stated rationale; they do not show that waiting was necessary or that the result meets those goals in practice.

A familiar ecosystem around a new form

Apple can bring the iPhone and iOS ecosystem to a format that has already been developed by other manufacturers. If the Duo’s folded and unfolded modes feel coherent, that existing ecosystem could make the transition less disruptive for iPhone users. The announcement does not by itself show how well users will adapt, how many apps will make full use of the inner display, or whether the phone’s trade-offs will suit them.

Why being late is also a risk

Apple is not entering an empty market. Samsung says its Flex Titanium foldable display technology builds on seven generations of foldable development and aims to balance slimness, flexibility, strength, and reduced crease visibility. Samsung EVP Sunghoon Moon has described its work as bringing display innovations to devices “anchored by exceptional viewing.” That is Samsung’s account of its own development, not independent proof of performance. Still, it illustrates the experience Apple’s product must meet. Samsung’s announcement describes the technology.

TrendForce says competition is shifting toward thinner and lighter designs, less visible creases, and long-term reliability. Those are moving targets: rivals can keep iterating while Apple’s first foldable establishes its place. TrendForce also argues that Apple’s requirements for displays, ultra-thin glass, hinges, and device architecture could encourage supply-chain upgrades and scale. That is an industry forecast, not an accomplished result. TrendForce’s September 10, 2026 analysis explains its view.

What the launch forecasts do—and do not—tell us

TrendForce’s September 10, 2026 figures are forecasts for the calendar year, not reported shipments or sales results. They put the iPhone Duo at approximately 5 million shipments and 24.8% of the foldable-smartphone market, within a projected global market of approximately 20.2 million shipments, up 0.5% year over year. For comparison, TrendForce forecasts approximately 7.1 million Samsung foldable shipments and a 35.1% share, and approximately 5 million Huawei foldable shipments and a 24.8% share. The similar projected share for Apple and Huawei says nothing by itself about product quality, customer satisfaction, or durability.

  • As stunning as it is strong: Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s ultra-durable composite back is lighter, stronger, and designed to be nearly impossible to crack[5,6]; and with scratch-resistant glass and an all-new hinge, it’s 3x stronger[5]
  • Unfold the fun: Drift away into immersive entertainment on the brighter-than-ever 8-inch screen[2]; take it into tabletop mode for hands-free streaming of your favorite content
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones

These projections suggest analysts expect Apple to become a major participant quickly. They cannot establish whether the device will sell as forecast, whether buyers will keep using it, or whether its design is better than competing phones. MacRumors maintains a foldable iPhone guide with historical context and competitor coverage; older pre-launch predictions there should not be treated as current product facts after Apple’s announcement.

What evidence would show whether Apple’s timing worked

A fair assessment needs more than a launch impression or an announced specification. The most useful comparisons would examine the same practical questions across current foldables:

  • Crease: How visible and noticeable is it under ordinary lighting and touch, both when new and after repeated folding?
  • Durability: How do the display, hinge, and frame hold up to repeated folding and everyday handling over time?
  • Portability: What are the folded phones’ size, weight, and thickness, and how comfortable are they to carry?
  • Inner-screen usefulness: Which apps adapt well, and how useful is multitasking in routine work and entertainment?
  • Trade-offs: How do camera and biometric features compare, and what are the price, regional availability, repair options, and service experience?

The available launch information does not provide a complete, matched comparison across current models or independent long-term test results. Until those exist, claims that Apple has solved foldables’ durability or crease problems remain unproven.

So, is Apple’s late entry its biggest advantage?

It could be. Apple’s strongest potential advantage is the chance to enter with a carefully integrated product after other companies have helped make foldables a defined category. The Duo’s announced display, hinge, materials, iOS 27 changes, and app support make that strategy plausible. But those features show intent, not that the phone is more reliable, better to use, or a better buy. Apple’s late start gives it a chance to learn from an established market; it also means competing against manufacturers that have already spent years refining their designs. The evidence that matters most—long-term reliability, actual sales, and broad user experience—is still to come.
