Apple’s iCloud data security overview says Advanced Data Protection brings end-to-end encryption to 25 data categories; Apple’s separate security guide says the total rises from 14 to 23. The two official pages do not explain the difference, so neither figure should be treated as a reconciled count.
What Apple’s two pages say
| Apple page | Published or updated | Claim |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud data security overview | Current page; accessed 7 October 2026 | Standard data protection always encrypts 15 categories end to end; Advanced Data Protection raises the total to 25. |
| Advanced Data Protection for iCloud security guide | 7 December 2022 | Advanced Data Protection raises the total from 14 to 23. |
Apple’s overview says its 25-category figure includes iCloud Backup, Photos, and Notes. The security guide’s 23-category wording names those same examples. The pages do not say why their totals differ, and the displayed category table on the overview does not by itself resolve the discrepancy. It is best understood as an inconsistency in Apple’s documentation, not proof that one count is correct or that a particular counting method reconciles them.

What Advanced Data Protection changes
Advanced Data Protection is an optional setting that expands end-to-end encryption to more iCloud data. Under standard data protection, Apple holds keys for much iCloud data and can assist with recovery. With Advanced Data Protection enabled, trusted devices retain sole access to the keys for most iCloud data covered by the feature. Apple’s security guide describes removing available-after-authentication service keys from its data-centre hardware security modules and rotating keys for affected services.

The added protection does not make every iCloud category end-to-end encrypted. Apple says iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendars remain outside end-to-end encryption. Some metadata and usage information also remain under standard data protection, including certain timestamps, checksums, file information, and backup details. For third-party CloudKit data, developers must declare fields encrypted; Apple says CloudKit assets are protected automatically.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Shared content has exceptions
Apple says shared content generally remains end-to-end encrypted when every participant has Advanced Data Protection enabled. Its documented exceptions include iWork collaboration, Photos Shared Albums, and sharing with “anyone with the link”; those shared items use standard data protection.
What enabling it means for recovery
Because Apple does not hold the keys for covered end-to-end encrypted data, recovery is the user’s responsibility. Apple requires at least one alternative recovery method: a recovery contact or a recovery key. The device passcode or password is also a recovery method.

- Recovery contact: A trusted person can provide a code to help you recover access, but does not gain access to your account.
- Recovery key: A 28-character code that you must keep safe and be able to retrieve.
If you lose access and cannot use your recovery methods, Apple says it cannot recover the covered data. Choose a method you can reliably access before turning the feature on.

How to interpret the 25-versus-23 discrepancy
- For the current overview’s stated total, Apple publishes 25.
- For the security guide’s stated total, Apple publishes 23, rising from 14.
- The cited pages do not explain the difference; do not combine the totals or assume one definitively replaced the other.
If you are deciding whether to enable the feature, the discrepancy does not change the practical questions: whether your devices meet the requirements, whether you can manage recovery yourself, and whether the web-access and sharing behavior suits your use. Apple’s overview and security guide describe the protection and its limits; the setup page is the place to confirm current eligibility and steps.
