Apple manufactures iPhones through a global network of suppliers and contractors, not in a single country or factory. Apple identifies mainland China as an iPhone assembly location, but its public disclosures do not say what share of current iPhones is assembled there. China remains important because Apple built a complex supplier network there over decades; the company’s broader supply chain also includes suppliers and manufacturing sites in India, Vietnam, and other countries.

How the iPhone supply chain works

Apple describes its supply chain as a sequence that runs from product design through materials recovery. Its overview says Apple products are “designed in California and built by people all over the world.” Suppliers support each stage, and Apple says its network includes thousands of supplier facilities in more than 60 countries. The overview identifies mainland China as a location for iPhone assembly, but it does not map every part or supplier to a particular iPhone model.

  1. Design and sourcing: Apple designs products and arranges for the materials and components needed to make them. Its public overview groups these activities at the start of the supply-chain lifecycle.
  2. Parts and components: Suppliers make parts and combine them into components such as displays, batteries, and chips. Materials and component production can involve different suppliers and locations.
  3. Assembly: Contractors bring components together into finished products. Apple identifies mainland China as an iPhone assembly location, but does not publish a current country-by-country breakdown of iPhone assembly volumes.
  4. Packaging and shipping: Suppliers and logistics partners support packaging and moving products toward customers.
  5. Support and recovery: Service providers support products in use, while recovery suppliers reclaim materials at the end of a product’s useful life.

This lifecycle comes from Apple’s supply-chain overview. It describes the broad system, not a complete supplier-to-part map for each phone.

Why China is a major manufacturing base

Apple’s position in China reflects a production network built over time, rather than a single factory decision. The Associated Press reported in April 2025 that Apple began building a complex supply chain in China in the 1990s. It also reported that relocating production to the United States would require years and billions of dollars. Those are reported descriptions of the scale and difficulty of a move—not a detailed company estimate of what it would cost to shift a particular iPhone model.

An established network matters because manufacturing depends on more than final assembly: suppliers, component makers, assembly contractors, and shipping operations must work together. Apple does not publish a country-by-country comparison of manufacturing cost, quality, productivity, or current output in the sources cited here, so those factors should not be treated as quantified explanations for its location choices.

Apple also outsources much of its manufacturing. In its 2023 proxy statement, the company said substantially all of its manufacturing was performed in whole or in part by outsourcing partners located primarily in Asia, including mainland China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. That filing describes the company’s broad operating model; it is not a current breakdown of manufacturing by country.

What Apple’s supplier list shows—and what it doesn’t

Apple’s 2024 supplier list records suppliers and their primary locations where manufacturing for Apple occurs. Apple says the list is based on direct spending for materials, manufacturing, and assembly of Apple products worldwide. It illustrates a multinational footprint, but it is not a full inventory of every iPhone part or factory.

Location What the published information establishes What it does not establish
Mainland China Apple identifies it as an iPhone assembly location; the supplier list also records manufacturing locations there. The share of iPhones assembled there, or whether a particular listed site makes a part for a specific model.
India The supplier list includes Pegatron locations in Tamil Nadu and Tata Electronics in Tamil Nadu. How much iPhone assembly or component production occurs there, or which models use a given site.
Vietnam The supplier list includes manufacturing locations in Vietnam. Which listed sites make iPhone parts, the volume they produce, or their role in a specific model.
Other countries The supplier list includes locations in multiple countries, consistent with Apple’s broader supplier network. A complete country-of-origin map for every iPhone component or material.

The locations and examples above come from Apple’s 2024 supplier list. A listed supplier location is not proof that every iPhone contains material from that supplier, that the listed site makes iPhone parts, or that the location is where a part’s raw materials originated.

Why a supplier address cannot trace every material in a phone

A product’s supply chain can span separate stages: a supplier’s location, where it manufactures a part, where a mineral is processed, and where that mineral was mined are different facts. Public supplier lists generally cannot connect all of those stages for an individual device.

Apple’s 2024 conflict minerals report, filed in 2025, explains that smelters and refiners report origin information in aggregate across their customers. Apple says this means it “cannot always determine the countries of origin of the 3TG actually contained in our specific parts and products.” The report identified 234 3TG smelters and refiners in Apple’s 2024 supply chain. As of December 31, 2024, Apple said it found no reasonable basis to conclude that any of them sourced 3TG that directly or indirectly financed or benefited armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or an adjoining country. These are company-reported findings, not a trace of every mineral in every iPhone.

Apple’s 2024 conflict minerals report contains the full disclosure and its limits.

How Apple’s footprint is diversifying—and what remains uncertain

Apple’s current supply-chain overview and its 2024 supplier list show manufacturing in mainland China alongside locations in India, Vietnam, and elsewhere. That supports describing the footprint as distributed and diversifying, but it does not establish that China has been replaced as a major production base or how much any country produces. The cited sources do not provide current country-by-country or model-by-model iPhone assembly shares.

Trade restrictions and geopolitical tensions are relevant risks. Apple’s 2023 proxy statement says international trade restrictions and U.S.–China tensions can materially affect its business where it has significant revenue or supply-chain operations. Policy conditions can change: the tariffs discussed in AP’s April 2025 report are a snapshot of that period, not a statement of current tariff rules.

When comparing production locations, the useful questions are whether a site supports component making or final assembly, how established the surrounding supplier network is, how much product-specific information is public, and what trade or geopolitical risks may affect it. The available sources do not provide comparable country-level cost, quality, productivity, or output figures to settle those comparisons numerically.

What Apple reports about supplier oversight

Apple publishes figures about supplier training, facility assessments, emissions, and materials. These figures offer context for how the company describes oversight and environmental efforts; they are aggregate company-reported measures, not proof that every site or product has the same result.

  • Apple says it conducted 895 supplier facility assessments in 2025, with more than 20% unannounced.
  • Apple reports that more than 2.4 million supplier employees received workplace-rights training in 2025. Its current overview also reports more than 33 million employees trained on workplace rights since 2008 and more than 10 million employees participating in technical training, professional development, and enrichment courses since 2008.
  • Apple reports a 60% or greater reduction in global greenhouse-gas emissions compared with a 2015 baseline. It also says that 30% of materials by weight used in Apple products came from recycled or renewable sources in 2025.

These measures are presented on Apple’s supply-chain page. They are company-reported totals and do not independently establish conditions at each facility or the material mix of a particular iPhone.
