Android voice typing may switch languages because automatic detection is enabled, but Gboard’s keyboard language options and its speech-recognition support are not the same thing. Google lists Hindi, Latin/Hinglish as a Gboard keyboard option, while its Advanced voice typing documentation lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish—not Hindi or Hinglish. Turning off automatic switching can stop changes among supported locales on eligible Pixel phones, but Google does not say it makes Hinglish dictation accurate.
Why voice typing changes languages or gets Hinglish wrong
There are two separate settings at work: the language layout used by the keyboard and the languages supported by speech recognition. Google lists Hindi, Latin/Hinglish among Gboard’s keyboard language options, but cautions that talk-to-text does not work with every language. A Hinglish keyboard layout therefore does not establish that voice typing can recognize mixed Hindi-English speech.
For Advanced voice typing, Google documents automatic language detection on Pixel 6 and newer and names English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish as supported languages. Hindi and Hinglish are not in that published list. If your speech mixes Hindi and English, recognition may therefore be uncertain even when Hinglish is available as a keyboard layout. Google’s guidance does not promise accurate mixed-language dictation.
Stop automatic language switching on a supported Pixel
If you use Advanced voice typing on a Pixel 6 or newer and see the setting, Google’s documented control is Settings > Voice typing > Auto-switch language. Turn off Auto-switch language, then manually select the keyboard language you want. This controls automatic changes among supported locales; it is not a Hinglish-recognition fix.

Advanced voice typing also requires the primary Gboard language and the device language to match, according to Google’s troubleshooting guidance. Menu wording and availability can vary by Android and Gboard version.
Check the selected Gboard language and layout
- Open Gboard settings and go to Languages > Add keyboard.
- Add the language and layout you need, then select it while typing with the globe key or by holding the space bar.
- Check that the intended layout is selected before dictating. Changing Gboard’s language does not change the Android device language.
Adding Hindi, Latin/Hinglish gives you a keyboard layout option; it does not add voice-recognition support for that language or guarantee mixed Hindi-English transcription.

Troubleshoot voice typing when it still misbehaves
- Confirm that Gboard has microphone permission and that Voice typing is enabled.
- Update Gboard. If the issue continues, Google suggests clearing Gboard’s cache.
- If you use Advanced voice typing, verify that the primary Gboard language matches the device language.
- If one word is wrong, tap it and correct it by speaking, typing, spelling it out, or selecting a suggested alternative.
These steps address setup and input problems; they cannot make an unsupported dictation language supported.
