That warning usually means the app has marked its current window as secure with Android’s FLAG_SECURE setting. Android then refuses to place that window in a screenshot and may also prevent it from appearing on non-secure displays, such as wireless casting. Your phone’s screenshot button is normally working; the app is choosing to protect that screen.
What the warning means
Android’s FLAG_SECURE window flag tells the operating system to treat a window’s contents as secure. A secure window is excluded from screenshots and from non-secure display output. The restriction applies to the window or activity that set the flag, so you may be able to capture the rest of the phone normally.
This explains the common pattern in which screenshots work in Chrome, Photos, or another app but fail on one banking, password, streaming, or payment screen. The app has applied a policy to that screen rather than disabling Android’s screenshot system globally.
What can be protected
- Bank balances, transaction details, and card information.
- Passwords, one-time codes, login credentials, and account-recovery screens.
- Purchase and checkout flows containing personal or payment data.
- DRM-sensitive video or other licensed media.
- Any private screen the service owner does not want copied or shown on a projector or casting receiver.
Why an app blocks screenshots
Developers use secure windows to reduce accidental disclosure and make copying sensitive information harder. A banking app, for example, can protect account numbers while still allowing screenshots in a public help section. A password manager can protect the vault while leaving its settings screen capturable.

The same flag also covers display mirroring. Android defines a secure window as one that should not be viewed on a non-secure display, so a blocked screenshot and a blank or hidden result during casting can have the same cause.
Screenshot blocking is different from screenshot detection
Android 14 added a privacy-preserving screenshot-detection API. An app can receive a callback after the user takes a screenshot, but detection does not itself prevent capture. For prevention, Android’s developer guidance still directs apps to set FLAG_SECURE on the activity window.
Therefore, an app can detect screenshots without blocking them, block them without using the detection callback, or use both mechanisms. Seeing a warning such as “This app does not allow screenshots” points to prevention, not merely detection.
What you can do as a user
Use the app’s approved copy or export path
Look for Download, Export, Share, Print, Receipt, or Statement. Banks often provide a PDF statement or transaction receipt; payment services may offer a shareable confirmation. These routes preserve the service’s security policy and usually produce better resolution and metadata than a screen image.

Move to a non-sensitive screen
Some apps secure only a detail view. Navigate to a help page, public receipt, or other screen that does not contain protected data and test the screenshot there. Do not assume that a successful capture of one page means every page has the same policy.

Ask the service provider
If you need evidence for an expense, dispute, accessibility task, or support case, request an approved copy from the provider. The provider can tell you which export format is accepted without asking you to weaken account security.
Do not rely on “bypass” utilities
Third-party screenshot tools, recorders, and mirroring apps cannot be promised to override a secure window. Android’s secure-surface model is specifically designed to keep protected content out of screenshots and non-secure displays. Results vary by device, Android release, and capture path, and a workaround may expose data or violate the app’s terms.
Diagnose whether the restriction is app-level

Work profiles and device-administrator policies can impose additional restrictions, but their exact behavior depends on the phone’s management configuration. They are separate from the app-level explanation documented by Android’s window APIs.
Reliability and Android-version details
Secure-window behavior is not identical on every device or capture method. Android’s fraud-prevention guidance notes that, on Android 11 (API 30) and lower, FLAG_SECURE was able to help on about 70% of devices reliably. The same guidance cautions that it is not reliable against every overlay attack or every screen-recording situation.
That qualification does not create a supported user switch for overriding the flag. It means developers should treat protection as device- and capture-path-dependent, while users should not treat an unexpected successful capture as proof that a protected screen is safe to copy.

If you develop the Android app
To exclude an activity from screenshots and non-secure displays, set the flag on that activity’s window. In Kotlin:

}Apply the flag only where the data requires it. If you set it on a shared activity, every screen rendered by that activity can become non-capturable. Remove or avoid the flag on public, support, or share-preview screens where screenshots are useful.

For Android 14 and newer, screenshot detection can notify an app that a screenshot occurred, but it should not be confused with the prevention code above. Test on the Android versions and devices your users actually have, including recording and casting paths.
Troubleshooting common cases
The warning appears after an app update
An update may have added secure-window protection to a previously capturable screen. Check the release notes and look for a new export or receipt action. Reinstalling or clearing the cache generally does not remove a policy enforced by the app itself.
A screenshot saves a black or blank image
The capture path may be honoring a secure surface even if it does not show the text warning. Try the app’s official export and test an unrelated app. If only the sensitive view is blank, treat it as the same protection.

Screen recording starts but omits the content
Recording and casting are non-secure display paths too. A recorder that shows the surrounding interface but hides the protected activity is behaving as the app intended; use an approved document or receipt instead.

Nothing can be captured anywhere
Restart the phone and test a basic, non-sensitive app. If the problem persists across apps, inspect work-profile or enterprise-management settings and contact the device administrator or manufacturer. That pattern is not explained solely by one app’s FLAG_SECURE setting.

Bottom line
“This app does not allow screenshots” normally means the app deliberately marked its current window secure. It is not evidence that your phone’s screenshot hardware is broken. Use the app’s export or sharing feature, request an approved copy, and treat any claimed bypass as unreliable and potentially unsafe.

Can I change an Android setting to allow screenshots in one blocked app?
There is no general, supported Android switch that overrides an app’s secure-window decision.
Does a blocked screenshot mean the app can see my other screenshots?
No. Blocking capture and receiving Android’s screenshot-detection callback are separate behaviors; the warning alone does not indicate that the app can inspect your photo library.

The website and native app can apply different window policies. A web page may be capturable even when the native Android activity protects its window.
Will printing always work when screenshots are blocked?
Not necessarily. Printing is available only when the app implements an approved print or export flow; a secure window does not automatically create one.
