Android does not treat a Developer options codec choice as a guarantee that the same codec will be used every time. When a Bluetooth audio device connects, Android negotiates an A2DP codec the phone and that specific device both support. Device settings, codec availability, and manufacturer preferences can therefore make the active codec differ from the selection you expected.
Why the codec can change after you select it
There are two different things to distinguish: a selection shown in Developer options and the codec negotiated for the Bluetooth audio device that is connected now. Android’s Bluetooth stack negotiates a codec supported by both the phone (the sender) and the connected audio device (the sink), then routes audio through that codec. A selection in Developer options is not a promise that every connected device or later connection will use it. Android’s Bluetooth documentation describes this negotiation.
- The connected device does not support the codec. A phone cannot negotiate a codec the headphones, speaker, or car system does not support.
- Optional or HD codecs are disabled for that paired device. Android has a separate HD Audio control in Bluetooth device details, apart from the codec selector in Developer options.
- The manufacturer’s implementation affects the result. Device makers can configure codec priorities, and some proprietary codecs may require separate licenses or binaries. Support and preference order can differ between phone models and firmware.
Android identifies SBC as the mandatory Bluetooth audio codec. When optional codecs are unavailable or disabled, falling back to SBC can be expected; it does not by itself show that the phone has malfunctioned. Android’s codec configuration reference describes SBC as mandatory and codec priority as relative, while Android Settings source code shows the optional-codec-disabled selection path returning SBC.
Check the per-device HD Audio setting
Android’s documented Settings path is Settings > Connected devices > Bluetooth. Tap the gear beside the headphones, speaker, or other audio sink, then check HD Audio. If the goal is to use an optional HD codec, make sure the option is enabled. To disable HD codecs, clear it. Menu names and locations can vary on manufacturer-customized Android versions; Android’s documentation says manufacturers should provide a way to disable HD codecs. - 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
This device-specific control is separate from Developer options. If HD Audio is off, an optional codec choice may not be available for that connection. Android’s A2DP API also documents that changing codecs can cause a brief audio drop and that disabling optional codecs uses the default Bluetooth codec. The BluetoothA2dp API reference explains those behaviors.
Diagnose the connection in order
- Connect the exact audio device you want to troubleshoot. Codec negotiation is for the connected sink, so checking while another headset or car system is connected will not answer what the target device is using.
- Open that device’s Bluetooth details. In Settings > Connected devices > Bluetooth, tap its gear and check the HD Audio or similarly named control. Enable it if you want optional codecs to be available.
- Verify codec support at both ends. Check the phone and the audio device’s specifications for the codec in question. If either endpoint lacks support, Android cannot negotiate it.
- Reconnect, then inspect the active codec. Treat the Developer options choice as a diagnostic control, not proof of the codec in use. Reconnecting and checking the connected device is a way to test the negotiation; it is not a guaranteed fix for a setting that changes.
- Write down the configuration if it still changes. Note the phone model, Android version and build, headset or speaker model and firmware, whether you re-paired it, the per-device HD Audio state, and the codec shown after reconnecting. Share those details with the phone or audio-device manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
What Developer options can—and cannot—tell you
Developer options is intended for debugging and profiling, and Android includes Bluetooth audio codec controls there. To enable Developer options on Android 4.2 or later, Android documents tapping the device’s Build number repeatedly; the Build number location and Developer options menu location vary by device. Android’s Developer options guide gives the general instructions.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
The A2DP API documents codec preferences and the ability to enable or disable optional codecs, but the active choice still depends on the connected sink and the phone’s implementation. Android’s Settings controller works with an active Bluetooth device and selectable configurations; its documented source behavior also ties the highest-codec selection to whether optional codecs are enabled. In other words, a value that appears in a developer-facing list is not necessarily the codec negotiated for a particular connection.

Android’s official documentation explains codec negotiation and the relevant controls, but it does not identify one fix for every report of a codec preference reverting. The result can depend on the exact phone, Android build, paired-device settings, and audio-device capabilities. The documentation also gives no prevalence figure for how often this happens, so reports such as “LDAC changes back to AAC” should be treated as device-specific observations, not proof of a universal Android defect.

Do not assume that changing Bluetooth A2DP hardware offload, rooting the phone, revoking system permissions, or installing an automation app will solve the issue: the cited Android documentation does not establish those as general causes or remedies. Likewise, buying different headphones is not a demonstrated fix for a phone’s preference persistence; first confirm codec compatibility at both endpoints.
