If Xbox asks you to buy a free-to-play game, first check what the prompt applies to: it may be for an add-on or different edition, or Xbox may not recognize the account’s right to play. Confirm the exact game and edition in the Xbox free-to-play catalog, then check the signed-in account and its purchase or claim history before paying. The prompt alone does not reveal the cause, and it does not prove that Game Pass is required.
What the purchase prompt might mean
A free-to-play base game can appear alongside paid editions, add-ons, or in-game purchases. A prompt to buy one of those items is different from a message that blocks installing or launching the base game. Note the exact wording, any error code, and where it appears: on the store listing, during installation, at launch, or when entering a particular mode.
Xbox access is also tied to the right account and product entitlement. Microsoft’s game licensing documentation gives error 0x803f8001 as an example of a user who lacks the rights to play; its guidance says, “If you do not have the rights to play it, you can purchase it at the Microsoft Store (0x803f8001).” That explains a licensing concept, but it does not identify the cause of a particular console’s prompt. Read the complete prompt
Write down its exact text and error code, if any. Check whether it refers to the base game, an add-on, currency, a special edition, or access to a specific mode. A purchase prompt for an optional item does not necessarily mean the base game is paid.

Verify the exact free-to-play listing
Search the game’s exact name in the Xbox free-to-play catalog and compare the listing with the title and edition shown on your console. Similar names or alternate editions can lead to a different store page. A catalog listing helps confirm what is offered, but it does not establish that every edition or mode is free.

Check the account that has the play right
Make sure the console is signed in to the Microsoft/Xbox account that claimed or purchased the game. Then review that account’s order or purchase history. Microsoft’s instructions for finding Microsoft downloads can help you locate downloads associated with an account.

Check availability for your console and region
Confirm that the exact listing is offered for your console generation and region. Microsoft notes that a game or app may be unavailable or incompatible with a device in its guidance on finding or installing an app from Microsoft Store. Availability on another platform or console generation does not establish that the same edition is available on yours.

Verify any subscription or mode requirement
Do not assume that every free-to-play title or mode requires Game Pass—or that a subscription will fix an account-entitlement issue. Requirements can depend on the game, mode, region, and current Xbox plan terms. Check the game’s official access terms and read the wording on the prompt before buying a game or subscription.

Contact Xbox Support if the entitlement still looks wrong
If the catalog shows the base game as free-to-play and the correct account is signed in, give Xbox Support the exact title and edition, console model or generation, prompt text, error code, and relevant claim or purchase history. These details help distinguish an account-right issue from an unavailable listing or a prompt for a separate paid item.
What can and cannot be diagnosed from the prompt
The title, edition, account, console, region, and exact wording are needed to identify why a particular prompt appeared. Microsoft’s documentation supports checking account play rights, purchase history, device compatibility, and availability; it does not establish a universal cause or a single console reset that fixes every case. Confirm those details before making a purchase.
