A porous structure made from one self-entangled coiled wire can increase in volume when it is either stretched or compressed. The unusual response comes from the way the coils and their contacts rearrange—not from a solid wire getting larger under load. Laboratory tests and simulations reported reversible behavior, but proposed uses such as filters and actuators are not established commercial products.

What is the entangled-wire material?

It is an architected, porous structure built from a single long wire twisted into a helix and entangled into a disordered ball. Researchers compressed the ball into a cylinder and heated it to set its shape without cross-linking the strands. The resulting material is not ordinary solid wire: its large-scale behavior depends on the geometry and movement of the coils.

Reported experimental variants included copper, polyamide fishing line, and nickel–titanium (NiTi). These are examples used to make analogous structures, not interchangeable consumer materials that can be assumed to reproduce the reported results.

Why can it get bigger under both tension and compression?

In many familiar materials, pulling lengthens a sample while making it thinner; squeezing shortens it and often makes it wider. In the entangled structure, the volume response is governed by the combined movement of the coiled wire and changes in contact between helices. The primary study attributes the unusual dilatancy to coiled-wire elongation interacting with steric rearrangements—the ways the coils constrain one another from occupying the same space.

Under compression, more vertical contacts can form between helices, limiting their lateral movement. Under stretching, changing contacts couple motion in different directions. Together, these geometric effects can make the porous cylinder’s total volume rise under either loading direction. This is a structural response of the entangled architecture, not a property of a conventional wire pulled by itself.

What did the study measure?

The primary study combined mechanical tests with discrete-element simulations and reported large, reversible dilatancy in tension and compression. One illustrative NiTi specimen described by Ray H. Baughman and Alexandre F. Fonseca in their 2016 Nature Materials commentary increased in volume by 29.7% when the cylinder was stretched by 32.3%, and by 25.9% when it was compressed by 20.1%. Those figures describe that specimen; they are not general performance specifications for every material or geometry.

The study reports hysteretic reversibility when the architecture is made from an elastic fibre. An explanatory account also describes repeated-cycle retention for tested elastic fishing-line and NiTi structures. Those observations apply to the cited examples and do not establish identical recovery for every wire material or construction.

Could this become a useful technology?

The authors identify smart filters, actuators, and fasteners as possible applications. Commentary has also raised sensor uses and other ideas. These are prospective directions, not evidence of commercial deployment, validated consumer products, or a current market. The inspected sources do not identify a product, kit, or replacement part; generic wire or fishing line is not an equivalent substitute for the deliberately coiled, entangled, and heat-set structure.
