Short answer: an assistant can mention an old detail because it is using a saved memory, relevant history, a custom instruction, project context, a file, or data from a connected app. Those sources are often stored separately from the visible chat you remember deleting. Identify which source supplied the detail, remove or correct that source, turn off the relevant personalization control, and then test in a new conversation. Exact menus, eligibility and retention periods differ by service, plan, region, device and managed-workspace policy.
Why does my AI keep referencing old chats?
“Memory” is an umbrella term. Different assistants combine several context mechanisms, and a reply that sounds like a quotation from an old conversation may actually be an inference from a profile setting or an attached source.
Saved memories
A saved memory is a separate fact or preference retained for future chats, such as your job, dietary preference or preferred writing style. Deleting the conversation where you first mentioned it may not delete this separate record. In ChatGPT, saved memories are stored separately from chats.
References to chat history
Some services search prior conversations for information that is relevant to the current request. This is selective, not a verbatim replay of every chat. OpenAI says ChatGPT looks for relevant information when it is likely to improve a response, and its help page cautions that “Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation.”

Instructions and profile context
Custom instructions, profile fields, team policies and project instructions can inject the same detail into every new conversation. If the wording never appeared in the chat you are looking at, check these settings before assuming the model retrieved an old transcript.
Files, projects and connected apps
A file uploaded to a library, a project knowledge source, email integration or another connected app can remain available after a chat is removed. The assistant may be responding to that source rather than to the deleted conversation.
Model behavior is not proof of retrieval
An assistant can also produce a plausible but incorrect detail. Treat a reference as a clue, not proof that a particular chat was searched. Look for the service’s source indicator and compare the statement with your settings and stored sources.

Use this order so you do not delete the wrong item or mistake a training setting for a personalization setting.
- Name the assistant and account. Record the exact product, whether the account is personal, work, school or supervised, and whether you are using web, desktop or mobile. Managed administrators can set or lock personalization controls.
- Capture the unwanted detail. Copy the sentence, note when it appeared and ask the assistant which source it used. If the interface offers a source, citation or memory indicator, open it. Such indicators can identify a past chat, memory, instruction, file or connected email, but they may not expose every factor used.
- Inspect personalization settings. Open the provider’s memory, personalization and history controls. Look for separate switches for saved memories, references to chat history, summaries and custom instructions rather than assuming one master toggle exists.
- Correct or remove the item. Edit an inaccurate saved fact or delete it when you no longer want it used. If the detail came from a conversation, delete that source chat where appropriate. Saying “do not mention this again” can change behavior without deleting the original source; OpenAI documents that distinction.
- Check separate repositories. Review file libraries, project sources and connected apps. Delete the relevant file or disconnect the app as well as deleting the chat when both contain the information. Gemini specifically warns that deleting only one of those sources may leave the other available.
- Prevent new personalization. Turn off the applicable memory or history-reference switch. For a one-off context-free exchange, use the provider’s temporary or unpersonalized mode if available, and choose it before starting the conversation.
- Test in a fresh chat. Start a new conversation and ask a neutral question that would normally trigger the old detail. A changed answer is a practical check, not proof that every stored copy has been erased. Providers may apply a delay, a scheduled deletion window or safety retention.
ChatGPT: find the source and remove it
OpenAI places the relevant controls at Settings > Personalization > Memory. The labels shown can vary by account and may include Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage or Saved memories. OpenAI says availability differs by plan, region, platform and workspace. See Memory in ChatGPT for the current interface.

What each ChatGPT action changes

When Reference chat history is turned off, OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion from its systems within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. The original chats stay in your history until you delete them. Turning off this option does not remove saved memories. For the most complete removal of a detail, delete the saved memory, the source conversation and any applicable Library or connected-app copy.
Deleting a chat alone therefore may not solve the problem. Conversely, turning off memory does not remove the transcript. Keep those actions separate when your objective is both to stop personalization and to erase the source.

Use Temporary Chat for a clean starting point
Open a new chat, choose Temporary, and select Unpersonalized before sending the first message. OpenAI says temporary chats do not create or update memories. They may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety, and saving one converts it to a regular chat governed by your account settings. See Temporary chat in ChatGPT.
Do not confuse personalization with model training
The data-control setting that governs whether chats may help improve models is separate from memory and chat-history personalization. Turning off model improvement does not delete existing chats or hide a saved memory. Use the controls described in Data controls in ChatGPT for that different concern.
Gemini: memory, activity and connected apps
Google’s cited Gemini help page says past-chat personalization requires a personal Google Account, the user to be at least 18 and Keep Activity turned on. It is not available for work, school or supervised accounts and may be unavailable in some product surfaces. The controls and eligibility can change as Google rolls the feature out.

Turn off or correct personalization
Google’s current path is Settings & help > Personal Intelligence. With Memory on, you can correct a fact directly in the conversation. To remove the underlying conversations, use Gemini Apps Activity to find and delete the relevant chats. Google notes that a short delay may occur before a deleted chat stops being used for personalization. Instructions are in Get personalization with memory of your past Gemini chats.
Handle connected-app data separately
If a detail came from a connected app, delete the relevant Gemini chats and disconnect that app when you want both sources removed. Doing only one can leave the other source available. Google also says updates or deletions in a connected app may take days to affect Gemini, so test again after that change rather than expecting an instant result.
Claude: disable conversation search or delete the source chat
Anthropic says past-chat search is rolling out to Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with expansion planned. In an eligible account, open Settings > Profile > Preferences and turn off Search and reference chats. Availability can change as the rollout progresses.
To ensure one particular old conversation is not included when Claude uses conversation search, delete that conversation. Anthropic’s documented guidance is explicit: “At this time, the only way to ensure a previous chat won’t be included when Claude uses conversation search is to delete it.” This statement applies to Claude’s conversation-search feature, not to every possible source such as files or workspace instructions. Microsoft Copilot: product and account determine the menu
Microsoft uses different controls for consumer Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat and managed work or school accounts. Do not assume that a menu shown for one product applies to another.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat
For Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, the documented path is Settings and more > Chat settings > Personalization. Turn off the Chat history toggle. Microsoft says inferences made from previous chats are removed after 30 days. If you turn the toggle back on during that 30-day period, conversation data may be restored. A work or school account may instead show a combined Chat history & work insights setting controlled by your organization.
Consumer Copilot
Microsoft’s consumer privacy documentation describes saved-memory controls separately from conversation history. You can inspect and delete individual memories or delete all memories while conversation history remains visible. Use the help page for the exact Copilot product and account you have; an administrator may restrict what you can change. See How Microsoft Copilot Chat history works.
Why deleting a chat may not erase the detail
Assistants can maintain multiple stores with different deletion rules:
- Conversation history: the visible transcript and its metadata.
- Saved memory: a separate profile-like record extracted from one or more chats.
- Files or libraries: uploaded documents retained independently of a chat thread.
- Connected services: mail, storage or other app data that can be queried again.
- Safety, legal or operational copies: records retained for a documented period or exception.
That is why a single toggle cannot honestly promise instant erasure. OpenAI publishes a 30-day scheduled deletion window for deleted saved chats, with exceptions, and a maximum 30-day safety-retention period for temporary chats. Microsoft documents a 30-day period for removing Microsoft 365 Copilot inferences after Chat history personalization is disabled. Google warns of a short delay for personalization changes and potentially days for connected-app updates. These are service-specific policies, not a universal rule.

- Use the least persistent mode. Choose temporary or unpersonalized chat before entering sensitive details when the provider offers it.
- Review custom instructions and project context. Remove stale preferences there; disabling memory will not necessarily disable an instruction you wrote yourself.
- Limit connected-app scope. Disconnect integrations you no longer need and remove sensitive files from their original service as well as from an assistant library.
- Separate work and personal accounts. A managed workspace can apply retention, history or personalization policies that you cannot override.
- Ask for source transparency. When a reply contains an unexpected fact, ask which memory, chat, file or instruction influenced it, then verify the answer against the provider’s source indicators.
- Re-test after the documented delay. If the old detail still appears immediately after deletion, wait through the provider’s stated processing period and test in a new conversation.
Common mistakes and their fixes
“I deleted the chat, so the memory must be gone.”
Fix: open the memory manager and delete the saved fact separately, then remove the source chat and any file or integration copy.

“I turned off model training, so the assistant cannot personalize.”
Fix: change memory or chat-history personalization controls. Training preference and personalization govern different systems.
“Temporary chat means nothing is retained.”
Fix: treat temporary mode as a way to avoid ordinary personalization and memory creation, not as a guarantee against safety retention or every provider-side record.
“The menu in an online guide is missing.”
Fix: check your product edition, account type, region, app version and workspace policy. Features can be limited by eligibility or rollout, and administrators can hide or lock settings.
“The assistant named an old fact, so it definitely searched my chats.”
Fix: inspect source indicators and settings first. The statement could come from an instruction, file, connected app or model inference rather than a retrieved transcript.
When to contact an administrator or support
Contact your workspace administrator when a work or school account lacks the memory controls shown in consumer documentation, or when a combined history-and-work-insights policy is locked. Contact the provider’s support channel when a deleted source continues to influence new chats after the published processing window, when a connected-app disconnection has not propagated, or when the account shows a source you cannot access. Include the product, account type, platform, deletion time and the exact setting changed, but avoid sending the sensitive content itself unless support requires it.
The practical takeaway
Stop treating “old conversation” as one thing. First identify whether the detail came from a saved memory, history search, instruction, project file or connected app. Then remove that source, disable the matching personalization control, and test in a fresh conversation. Delete the transcript and separate repositories when you need erasure, and allow for each provider’s delay or retention exception. Those steps address the actual source instead of relying on a single switch that may control only one layer.
