AMD announced in November 2024 that it would reduce its global workforce by approximately 4%, saying it was aligning resources with its largest growth opportunities. Reuters connected the move to AMD’s push to develop AI chips and compete with Nvidia, and estimated the reduction at about 1,000 employees. AMD did not give that headcount in its quoted statement or say that AI was the sole reason for the cuts.
What AMD announced—and what it said
An unnamed AMD spokesperson told CRN that “as a part of aligning our resources with our largest growth opportunities, we are taking a number of targeted steps that will unfortunately result in reducing our global workforce by approximately 4%.” The spokesperson added that AMD was “committed to treating impacted employees with respect and helping them through this transition.” CRN reported the statement on November 13, 2024.
The announcement did not specify which teams, locations, or roles would be affected. Reuters reported the scale as about 1,000 employees; that is a reported estimate, not a precise total supplied in AMD’s quoted statement. Reuters’ November 13, 2024 report, republished by Investing.com, framed the reduction in the context of AI-chip development and competition with Nvidia.
Was AMD cutting jobs to focus on AI chips?
That connection needs qualification. AMD’s public statement described a broad effort to align resources with growth opportunities; it did not specifically say the workforce reduction was for AI chips. Reuters linked the move to the company’s AI-chip push, while AMD’s later filing described a 2024 restructuring plan focused on efficiency and aligning resources with opportunities in AI and enterprise markets.

AMD recorded $186 million in restructuring charges in 2024 under that plan, according to its 2024 Form 10-K, filed February 5, 2025. That disclosure supports the stated restructuring rationale, but it does not show which roles were eliminated or establish that every cut was in AI-related work.
What the business context shows
AMD’s Q3 2024 results, released October 29, reported $6.8 billion in revenue and forecast approximately $7.5 billion for Q4. Those figures place the announcement in context but do not, by themselves, explain why AMD reduced its workforce. AMD’s Q3 2024 financial results provide the company’s figures and forecast.

What AMD did after the announcement
AMD’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in February 2026, provides a later checkpoint. The company said it deployed Instinct MI350-series GPUs with hyperscale customers and advanced an annual AI GPU roadmap. It reported 2025 Data Center net revenue of $16.6 billion, up 32% from 2024.
The filing also disclosed an October 2025 agreement with OpenAI to deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, with the first gigawatt powered by MI450 products. These are later company disclosures, not evidence that the 2024 workforce reduction produced the product deployments, agreement, or revenue growth.

What remains unknown
The public information cited here establishes AMD’s approximate percentage announcement, its stated resource-alignment rationale, and the restructuring charges later reported. It does not establish the number of employees actually separated, the geographic or functional distribution of cuts, or the savings achieved. Nor does it establish a causal link between the reduction and AMD’s subsequent AI products or results.
