If a feature works on your iPhone but not your Mac, that does not necessarily mean your AirPods are faulty. AirPods can connect across Apple devices while individual features still depend on the AirPods model, the device handling audio, its operating system, settings, supported content, and sometimes language or region.
Why AirPods can connect but still behave differently
Pairing and feature compatibility are separate. After initial setup, supported AirPods can connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That convenience does not make every advanced feature available on every device. Apple also provides separate setup instructions for iPhone and iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Vision Pro, with steps that can vary by AirPods model. Apple’s AirPods setup and connection guide explains the connection process.
Think of compatibility as a set of requirements that must line up for a particular feature:
- AirPods model and variant: feature eligibility can be limited to named generations or versions, such as an ANC model.
- Host device and operating system: the iPhone, Mac, or other device handling the audio may need a specific model and minimum OS version.
- Settings, firmware, apps, and services: the feature may need to be enabled, current firmware, or a required Apple app or service.
- Content, language, and region: playback support and availability can depend on what you are using and where you are.
That is why successful Bluetooth pairing is not a reliable test of whether a specific feature should appear.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How connection and automatic switching work
When supported AirPods are set up with an Apple device, signing other devices into the same Apple Account can allow them to connect without repeating the full pairing process. Automatic switching is a separate behavior: audio may move to the Apple device you are using. If it switches at the wrong time, select the AirPods manually on the device you want to use, or adjust the automatic connection preference.
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the info button next to your AirPods, and choose the connection option that fits your preference, including When Last Connected to This iPhone where available. On Mac, open System Settings > Bluetooth, select your AirPods, and choose the corresponding connection behavior. Apple documents manual switching and the “When Last Connected” setting for iPhone, iPad, and Mac in its automatic switching guide. Menu labels can vary with OS version.

Why individual features have different requirements
Spatial Audio depends on the device and the content
Apple provides Spatial Audio controls for iPhone or iPad, Mac, and Apple TV 4K, but the requirements are not identical. The Mac guidance requires Apple silicon and macOS 12.3 or later; Apple TV 4K requires tvOS 15.1 or later. Apple’s support guide also says, “Spatial Audio isn’t available for all apps or content.” So a compatible device and AirPods do not guarantee that every app, video, or playback path will offer it. Check the app and the specific item you are playing as well as the device controls. See Apple’s Spatial Audio and head tracking guide.
Adaptive Audio features are limited to listed models
Apple lists AirPods Max 2, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 (ANC), and AirPods 5 for Adaptive Audio, Personalized Volume, and Conversation Awareness. You can manage the relevant settings on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and Apple says those settings carry over when the AirPods switch devices. If you cannot find one of these controls, first confirm the exact AirPods generation and variant rather than assuming all AirPods support it. Details are in Apple’s Adaptive Audio guide.

Live Translation requires a compatible iPhone as well as AirPods
Apple’s September 15, 2026 Live Translation article lists AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 as supported models. It also requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence enabled, the Translate app installed, and current AirPods firmware. Language and regional availability varies. Having a listed AirPods model alone is not enough if the connected iPhone or other requirements do not qualify. Check Apple’s Live Translation availability and requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check when a feature is missing
- Identify the exact AirPods model and variant. Confirm the generation and whether it is the ANC version when the feature list distinguishes it.
- Check the feature’s model list. Do not infer advanced-feature support from the fact that the AirPods pair successfully.
- Check the device currently handling audio. Compare its model and operating-system version with the feature’s requirements.
- Confirm required software and services. Where applicable, update AirPods firmware and verify that required apps or services are installed and enabled.
- Check the relevant device controls. Settings may be surfaced on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, even when audio is being used elsewhere.
- For Spatial Audio, verify the app and specific content. Not every app or item supports it.
- For Live Translation, check language and regional availability. A supported device combination does not remove those conditions.
- If audio is going to the wrong device, switch manually or adjust automatic switching. Confirm the devices use the same Apple Account when expecting automatic connection.
This checklist organizes Apple’s published requirements; it does not diagnose a particular AirPods set or prove that a device is defective.
