AI matters in modern software testing because it can help teams generate candidate tests, focus regression runs, analyze failures, and keep pace with frequent code changes. It does not make testing optional or guarantee better software: AI is most useful when sound test design, delivery practices, and human judgment are already in place. As DORA puts it, AI acts as an “amplifier” of an organization’s existing strengths and dysfunctions.

Why AI matters to software testing now

Testing is part of the software delivery system, not merely a final gate. When AI helps developers produce or change code faster, validation has to keep pace. Otherwise, more changes can reach later stages without adequate evidence that they meet requirements or avoid regressions.

DORA’s 2024 report summary says that improved development processes do not automatically translate into improved software delivery, and it highlights small batches and robust testing mechanisms. In Google Cloud’s summary of that report, more than one-third of respondents said AI had brought moderate-to-extreme productivity increases. The same summary reports associations between a 25% increase in AI adoption and increases of 7.5% in documentation quality, 3.4% in code quality, and 3.1% in code-review speed. It also reports an estimated 1.5% decrease in delivery throughput and a 7.2% reduction in delivery stability alongside increased adoption, while 39% of respondents said they had little to no trust in AI-generated code. These are report-level associations, not proof that AI testing causes those outcomes or changes defect rates. Google Cloud’s summary of the 2024 DORA report

DORA’s 2025 report draws on more than 100 hours of qualitative data and survey responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide. Its finding that AI amplifies organizational strengths and dysfunctions is a useful way to frame testing: teams with clear requirements, dependable feedback loops, and good review practices can use AI to extend them; weak processes can also be accelerated. The survey is not a controlled experiment establishing universal causal effects. DORA 2025 State of AI-assisted Software Development Report

Where AI can help in the testing lifecycle

AI capabilities differ in maturity and purpose. A generated test is not the same thing as a verified test, and support for one language or workflow does not imply support for every stack.

Generate candidate tests

Models can propose tests from source code or requirements, including inputs and expected outcomes. Microsoft Research describes transformer models trained on developers’ code to generate readable tests intended to resemble developer-written tests. The project identifies fault discovery, regression coverage for existing methods, and test-driven development for methods that are not yet implemented as use cases. Its page specifies C# in Visual Studio and Java in VSCode; those are the project’s stated contexts, not a universal language list. Microsoft Research: AI for Testing

Prioritize regression tests after changes

Machine-learning approaches can use patterns between code changes and production failures to estimate risk and prioritize which regression tests to run first. This can help shorten feedback loops when a full suite is expensive, but a risk ranking is not proof that unselected tests are safe to omit. Keep a strategy for full-suite runs and risks the model may not have seen.

Analyze failures and historical signals

AI-assisted QA can help identify defects, examine failure data, and predict which changes may be risky. Why AI-generated tests still need human review

A test suite can grow while confidence stays misplaced. Passing checks only tell a team that the tested conditions passed; they do not establish that the tests reflect the product’s real requirements, cover important user journeys, or protect against high-impact failures.

  • Check relevance and expected behavior. Confirm each proposed test corresponds to a requirement or an intentional behavior, and that its assertions would fail when the relevant defect exists.
  • Look beyond common cases. Review boundary values, unusual state transitions, accessibility and usability, and rare but consequential failures. Automated checks can miss what the team did not think to ask.
  • Apply business and compliance priorities. A model may not know which defect affects revenue, safety, contractual obligations, or regulatory duties most.
  • Watch for inherited blind spots. Historical test and defect data can encode prior biases and gaps; a model may reproduce them rather than expose them.
  • Protect sensitive information. Code, logs, telemetry, and internal documentation submitted to a tool may contain personal data or intellectual property. Use only workflows permitted by organizational privacy and security rules.
  • Retain exploratory testing and domain expertise. Human testers can investigate ambiguous behavior and evaluate whether a result makes sense in context, rather than treating a large count of passing checks as proof of quality.

IBM specifically cautions about false confidence from numerous passing automated checks, weak business context, historical-data bias, rare high-impact bugs, shifting products or architectures that reduce prediction accuracy, and sensitive-data exposure. AI-enabled systems need testing too

When the product itself uses AI, ordinary software tests may not capture its full risk profile. NIST identifies increased statistical uncertainty; challenges with bias management, scientific validity, and reproducibility; difficulty predicting failure modes and deciding what to test; opacity; privacy risks; maintenance needs caused by data, model, or concept drift; and underdeveloped testing standards. NIST AI RMF: Appendix B, How AI Risks Differ from Traditional Software Risks

These concerns affect both what teams test and how they interpret results. A model’s behavior may vary with data or change as the model or operating context evolves. Teams should identify which behaviors need monitoring and reassess tests when relevant data, models, requirements, or architecture change. NIST’s SP 800-218A augments Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) 1.1 with AI-specific practices for model producers, AI-system producers, and acquirers; it is a useful reference for secure development, not a substitute for evaluating a system’s particular risks.

How to evaluate an AI-testing pilot

  1. Choose one bounded task. Decide whether the pilot concerns test generation, regression-test selection, test maintenance, failure analysis, or another defined activity. Avoid judging a tool on a vague goal such as “use more AI.”
  2. Set a baseline and success measures. Record the current workflow and evaluate time saved alongside relevance, readability, reproducibility, defect detection, coverage of requirements, and delivery stability. A faster task is not a success if important checks or quality signals deteriorate.
  3. Test fit with your stack. Verify support for the team’s language, test framework, repository conventions, and CI/CD workflow. Inspect whether generated tests are understandable and maintainable by the people who own them.
  4. Check data handling before connecting sources. Establish whether code, logs, telemetry, or documentation may be sent to the tool and whether that complies with your organization’s security and privacy requirements.
  5. Review outputs against real risks. Have developers, testers, and domain experts inspect tests and prioritization decisions for requirement fit, edge cases, business priorities, accessibility, usability, and high-impact rare failures.
  6. Observe behavior as the environment changes. Plan to notice shifts in performance as the software, data, or model evolves, and decide when the team will revalidate or revise the workflow.

For secure development practices tailored to generative AI and dual-use foundation models, consult NIST SP 800-218A, which supplements SSDF 1.1 and addresses model producers, AI-system producers, and acquirers. NIST SP 800-218A announcement
