Some detectors lose accuracy after paraphrasing, while other approaches may retain useful evidence under particular conditions. A detection result is therefore evidence with limits—not universal proof of who wrote a passage.
What “humanizing” text changes—and what it may leave behind
An AI humanizer typically rewrites or paraphrases generated text. It can change word choice and sentence structure while keeping the original meaning. That surface change may disrupt patterns a detector learned to recognize, but it does not guarantee that every statistical, stylistic, or generation-related trace disappears.
Different detection methods look for different evidence. A statistical classifier estimates whether text resembles examples of machine-generated writing. A watermark detector tests for a signal deliberately inserted during generation. A provider with access to records of its own generations may use retrieval. Human readers, meanwhile, can consider features such as coherence, formality, clarity, originality, and recurring lexical choices—not just individual words.
Why some detectors struggle after paraphrasing
Paraphrasing can preserve a passage’s meaning while changing its surface form. In a 2023 study, Krishna and colleagues tested the DIPPER paraphrasing system against several detection methods. With the false-positive rate held at 1%, they reported that DetectGPT accuracy fell from 70.3% to 4.6% after DIPPER paraphrasing. Those figures describe the authors’ tested systems and conditions, not every detector or current commercial product. Read the study.

The same paper describes retrieval as a possible defense: a provider can compare suspected text with semantically similar generations in a database it maintains. That approach depends on access to such a record; it is not a general capability available to any reader or institution.
Why other approaches may still find a signal
Detectors trained on humanized examples
A learned detector can be trained with examples of rewritten AI text, potentially making it more robust to the kinds of transformations represented in its training data. Masrour, Emi, and Spero’s 2025 DAMAGE study evaluated 19 humanizer and paraphrasing tools. The authors reported that many existing detectors failed on humanized text, and demonstrated a model using data-centric augmentation that generalized across the humanizers studied. The paper does not establish that all humanized text is detectable, or that its model will generalize to every tool, genre, or future rewriting method. Read the DAMAGE paper.

Watermarks inserted during generation
A watermark is different from a general-purpose classifier: it is embedded during generation and later tested for. Rewriting can weaken the signal, but surviving n-grams or longer text fragments may still provide statistical evidence. In the ICLR 2024 study, a watermark remained detectable after strong human paraphrasing, with an average of 800 observed tokens needed at a false-positive rate of 1e-5 in that study’s experimental setup. This is not a universal minimum text length or a promise that every watermark survives every rewrite. Read the ICLR study.
Human judgment
People may draw on broader cues than word choice alone. In a controlled ACL 2025 study, five people who frequently used LLMs for writing tasks evaluated 300 non-fiction English articles, including text exposed to paraphrasing and humanization tactics. By majority vote, they misclassified one article. This is a result for that sample and those annotators, not a general accuracy guarantee for human readers, other subjects, or other languages. Read the ACL paper.

Why detector results vary
Detection performance depends on the system and the conditions under which it is tested. NIST’s 2024 GenAI pilot evaluation, reported in 2025, found substantial variation among systems: some generators could deceive most discriminators, while some discriminators could detect content from almost all generators. That system-level finding is a reason to avoid treating one detector score as a universal authorship verdict. Read NIST’s report.

- Text and task: language, length, genre, and subject matter can affect how well a method applies.
- Generator and rewrite: performance may differ by text generator and by the humanizer or paraphrasing method used.
- Threshold and false positives: a detector’s score is meaningful only alongside its decision threshold and the risk of labeling human writing as AI-generated.
- Method and access: a classifier, a generation-time watermark, provider-side retrieval, and human judgment rely on different signals and assumptions.
- Evidence scope: a controlled study or benchmark result applies to the systems and conditions it evaluated; it does not automatically validate a vendor’s broader claim.
How to use a detection result responsibly
For a teacher, editor, or organization reviewing a passage, a detector score is best treated as one signal for further review rather than a standalone authorship finding. Check whether the tool’s tested language, text type, and length match the material in question, and look for information about its threshold and false-positive behavior. Where the stakes are high, consider additional context and evidence instead of relying on a single automated result.
