An adaptive edge threshold can miss a document’s outline when printed text creates stronger gradients than the boundary between the paper and its background. In a postmortem about LensUp, a browser-based document scanner, Yan Wang describes capping the threshold and checking candidate geometry and contrast—not simply treating the strongest edges as the page.
Why can an adaptive threshold erase the page boundary?
Page-corner detection needs to distinguish the paper’s four edges from everything else in a phone photo. Wang describes a pipeline that converts the image to grayscale, blurs it, calculates Sobel gradients, builds an adaptive edge map, detects Hough lines, and selects a best convex quadrilateral. The working grayscale image is scaled to a 640-pixel long edge.
The threshold in this account is based on the 90th percentile of Sobel gradient magnitudes. That makes it responsive to the image, but not necessarily to the feature the detector cares about. Printed letter strokes may produce stronger gradients than the subtle transition from paper to desk. If text dominates the measured gradients, the page border can fall below the threshold and disappear from the edge map. The risk is especially acute when the page fills most of the frame and little background is visible. Wang’s account describes the behavior; the article’s reported implementation and tests have not been independently verified.

What threshold change did Wang report?
Rather than removing adaptation, Wang says the detector retained edgePercentile: 0.9 and minEdgeMagnitude: 14, while limiting maxEdgeThreshold to 30. The ceiling is intended to keep strong text gradients from pushing the threshold so high that weaker page edges are discarded. It is a reported setting for this implementation, not a universal recommendation for document scanners.

In a comparison Wang describes as using 300 real frames, the cap of 30 located pages in 41.0% of frames, versus 23.3% with a cap of 220. These are figures from the author’s account, with no independent validation or publication year established in the available material; they should not be read as a general benchmark or as a guarantee of performance on other cameras, backgrounds, or lighting.
Why is edge strength not enough to identify a page?
A quadrilateral can fit lines in the edge map without being the paper. Wang describes adding checks for contrast direction and geometric plausibility so that a strong interior rectangle or a misleading image border is less likely to win.

Check contrast polarity instead of demanding a large contrast gap
In Wang’s account, paper on light wood had a median contrast of roughly 14 luma levels. A minimum-contrast setting of 14 reportedly rejected about half of true pages. The implementation therefore used a minimum contrast of 8 and relied more on polarity: the page interior should be brighter than the exterior along all four sides. These measurements and the resulting settings are the author’s product-specific account, not independently measured findings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Reject edge-hugging candidates and require side support
The described detector rejects a candidate if one of its sides lies within 2% of the image boundary and requires at least 0.42 side support. Those checks help guard against treating the image frame itself as a page edge or accepting a quadrilateral with weak evidence along one side.

Prefer the largest well-supported quadrilateral
Wang says the detector selects the largest quadrilateral that has adequate support. This reduces the chance that a smaller rectangle inside the page—such as a text block or a printed border—will displace the actual page outline. Size alone is not enough: the candidate still has to meet the support and other plausibility checks.
How should a detector handle uncertain or failed crops?
Wang describes detections as proposals rather than unquestionable results. Candidates smaller than 25% of the frame are proposals, not automatically applied crops; handles remain draggable, and the calling interface can decide whether confidence is sufficient for automatic application. When detection fails, the function returns null, leaving the original image intact.

- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
This is a useful product-design distinction: a missed crop can be less damaging than a confidently wrong one that cuts off part of the document. Whether to apply a crop automatically depends on the consequences of an error and the detector’s reliability in the conditions that matter to the product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy might recovery techniques remain disabled?
The account says weak-edge recovery and contour recovery improved some reported detection numbers but were disabled in shipped defaults because of latency concerns on target hardware. That is implementation-specific context, not a general reason to avoid either technique. A team considering recovery should evaluate both detection success and false crops, along with the added delay, on its own devices and representative images.

What can this postmortem—and its figures—not establish?
The account offers a concrete failure mechanism and a reported adjustment, but its 300-frame comparison is not an independent benchmark. The available material does not establish how the frames were sampled, how varied their backgrounds and lighting were, or how the detector compares with other approaches. The reported percentages therefore show what Wang says happened in that test, not what users should expect elsewhere.
Wang identifies LensUp as a browser-based scanner and says detection runs in the browser without uploading files. Those are the product author’s claims, not an independent privacy audit. The technical account is useful for understanding how text can overwhelm an adaptive edge threshold, but its implementation details and results should be treated as a single product’s experience.
