A USB4 port or dock label does not guarantee two 4K monitors at 120Hz. The laptop, dock, operating system, graphics hardware, monitors, and cables must all support that exact combination. For example, Plugable documents dual 4K 120Hz on its UD-4VPD only with a compatible Windows 11 USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 computer that supports DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 and Display Stream Compression (DSC). The fix is to identify which part of your setup does not support the mode, then simplify or change the connection accordingly.
Why USB4 alone does not guarantee dual 4K at 120Hz
USB4 describes a connection standard, not a universal display configuration. A dock can use USB4 and still support only one high-refresh display, two displays at lower refresh rates, or different limits on different operating systems. The computer must send enough display data, and the dock must route it to both outputs in the mode you want.
For the UD-4VPD, Plugable specifies DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 and DSC on the host for its dual 4K 120Hz mode, in addition to a compatible Windows 11 USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 system. Plugable notes that these capabilities are not required on every USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 computer. Check your computer maker’s specifications rather than inferring display support from the port label.

DisplayPort can travel over USB-C, but that does not tell you how a particular laptop allocates its connection between display and other data, or what its dock exposes. VESA’s explanation of DisplayPort over USB-C describes the standard’s capability; it is not a certification of a particular laptop-and-dock combination.

DSC, or Display Stream Compression, is part of Plugable’s requirements for the UD-4VPD’s cited dual 4K 120Hz mode. Do not assume it is available end to end just because one component supports it: verify the requirements for the host, dock, and intended connection in their manufacturers’ documentation.
MST and how a dock creates two displays
Multi-Stream Transport (MST) lets a display connection carry multiple display streams. Plugable says the UD-4VPD uses MST to create two HDMI displays from one USB-C connection. MST is not a promise that every computer, dock, operating system, or display combination supports two streams at the same resolution and refresh rate. Microsoft’s guidance for daisy-chaining monitors also requires MST-capable displays and GPU support, and says chained displays operate at reduced resolution and refresh.

How model-specific display specifications differ
These manufacturer specifications show why “USB4 dock” is not enough to predict the result. They describe the listed models, not USB4 as a whole.
| Dock | Documented display configuration | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Plugable UD-4VPD | Up to two 4K displays at 120Hz | Requires a compatible Windows 11 USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 host with DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 and DSC. Plugable lists Mac support as one extended display up to 60Hz. |
| Microsoft Surface USB4 Dock | Two 4K displays at 60Hz, or one 8K display at 30Hz over USB-C | These are Microsoft’s specifications for this dock. |
| Razer USB 4 Dock | One 4K display at 120Hz, or two 4K displays at 60Hz | These are Razer’s specifications for this dock. |
| StarTech USB4 dock | Dual 4K at 120Hz, or single 8K at 60Hz | This is a vendor claim for that model; check its product documentation for host and connection conditions. |
“Two 4K displays” is not equivalent to “two 4K displays at 120Hz simultaneously.” When comparing products, look for the exact resolution, refresh rate, number of displays, ports, host platform, and operating system in the same supported configuration.

- One Cable Desk Setup: Turn your laptop into a full workstation with one connection, run two HDMI monitors (up to 4K 60Hz each on supported systems) and keep your desk setup ready for multitasking, spreadsheets, and video calls. Monitor resolution and refresh rate depend on your host system’s capabilities (dual 4K 60Hz requires a host that supports higher-end display output).
- Compatibility Checklist: Designed for Windows 10+ / USB4 / Chromebook systems that support DP Alt Mode + MST. Not recommended for macOS if you need dual extended displays (Mac will be limited to one external monitor).
- Easy Setup, No Drivers: True plug-and-play, no software installation required on supported systems. Just connect power, plug into your laptop, and attach your monitors and accessories. Host must support USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode) for video output (not all USB-C ports support video).
- 10-in-1 Connectivity for a Ready to Go Workstation: Connect your everyday desk essential – keyboard/mouse, external storage, Ethernet, and a headset for calls through one dock. Includes 1x USB-C (5Gbps), 2x USB-A 3.0 (5Gbps), 1x USB-A 2.0 (480Mbps), Gigabit Ethernet, and audio in/out, plus a secure K-Lock slot for office environments.
- What’s Included + Lifetime Support: In the box you’ll get the UD-MSTH2 dock, 110W power adapter, 1m USB-C host cable, and a Quick Start Guide for fast setup. Backed by Plugable’s lifetime support from our North American team of connectivity experts.
How to diagnose the setup and find the bottleneck
- Write down every model and connection. Record the laptop model and operating system, graphics hardware, dock model, monitor models, which dock port feeds each monitor, and every cable, adapter, extension, hub, or other dock in the path. A generic USB4 label does not establish the supported display mode.
- Verify the computer’s video capabilities. Check the computer maker’s specifications for the display output standards and features required by the dock. For the UD-4VPD’s cited dual 4K 120Hz mode, that means a compatible Windows 11 USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 host with DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 and DSC.
- Check the dock’s configuration table. Confirm that its documentation explicitly lists two 3840×2160 displays at 120Hz at the same time, on the ports you plan to use, with your host type and operating system. A single-display 4K 120Hz entry or a dual 4K 60Hz entry is a different configuration.
- Test each display on its own. Use the intended dock port and cable, select the target resolution and refresh rate in the operating system, and then repeat with the other monitor. If one screen cannot reach the target by itself, investigate that monitor’s input, cable, dock port, or host path before testing both together.
- Reduce the connection path. Temporarily remove intermediate hubs, adapters, extensions, and other docks. Test the computer connected directly to one display if possible, then test the dock with one display, and add the second only after the first works. Changing one component at a time helps isolate the limit.
- Check settings, drivers, and monitor inputs. Install the computer maker’s current graphics driver and verify the active resolution and refresh rate in the operating system’s display settings. Check that each monitor is connected to an input that supports the desired mode; consult the monitor and dock manuals for input-specific limits.
- Pick a supported fallback if the full mode is unavailable. Depending on the limitation, use a lower refresh rate such as 60Hz, connect one display directly to the laptop, or use a dock whose manufacturer documents dual 4K 120Hz for your exact host and operating system. A cable or driver change cannot make an unsupported host or dock configuration supported.
What to check before choosing a replacement dock
- Does the documentation explicitly support two 3840×2160 displays at 120Hz simultaneously—not one display at 120Hz or two at 60Hz?
- Which computer type and operating systems does that configuration support?
- Does it require DisplayPort 1.4, HBR3, DSC, or MST on the host or displays?
- Which output ports and cable types are used for the advertised mode?
- Does the manufacturer’s resolution table cover your laptop and operating system, not merely the dock’s maximum headline specification?
The UD-4VPD is one documented option for a reader seeking two HDMI outputs, but its high-refresh claim is conditional on the Windows 11 host requirements above; Plugable lists a different, one-display limit for Mac systems. Treat it as a model-specific example, not a universal USB4 solution.
