A travel router can connect to a hotel’s Wi-Fi but still have no internet if you have not completed the hotel’s captive-portal login or the hotel has not authorized the router. First check whether the router actually joined the hotel network; then try the portal, temporarily disable the router’s VPN, check device or MAC-address registration, and ask hotel staff to authorize the router if needed. Hotel policies and router controls vary, so no setting guarantees access.

First identify where the connection is failing

Joining the hotel’s wireless network and reaching the internet are separate steps. A router that has joined the hotel SSID may still be blocked until someone accepts terms, enters room or guest credentials, or completes another verification step. GL.iNet describes this connected-but-no-internet situation in its captive-portal guidance and repeater guide.

  • Cannot join the hotel SSID: The problem is at the wireless association or network-configuration stage. Confirm that you selected the right network and that the router’s repeater setup completed.
  • Joined, but no internet: An incomplete captive-portal login or hotel authorization rule is a likely cause. Continue with the portal steps below.

Connect the router to the hotel Wi-Fi in repeater mode

  1. Connect your phone or computer to the travel router’s own Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open the router’s administration panel or app and select repeater mode. On GL.iNet routers, the default administration address in the vendor’s guide is 192.168.8.1; other brands and models may use a different address or app.
  3. Scan for the hotel SSID, select it, and follow the router’s prompts to connect.
  4. Check the router’s internet or repeater status before troubleshooting the portal. If it has not joined the hotel network or received network details, resolve that connection first.

For GL.iNet-specific repeater instructions, see the official repeater guide. Controls and labels are not necessarily the same on other brands.

Complete the hotel’s captive portal login

Keep your phone or computer connected to the travel router. Open a browser and try to visit an ordinary website; this may prompt the hotel’s login page. Complete any required terms acceptance, credentials, or other verification. A captive portal not appearing does not necessarily mean the router failed to connect—the login page may simply not have opened.

Use public-hotspot Login Mode if your router offers it

GL.iNet documents a “Login Mode for Public Hotspots” option for supported firmware. Its guidance says the option may engage when a router joins a hotspot but has no internet access. On supported devices, enabling Login Mode can suspend some services and switch DNS to automatic to help with the login flow. Menu names and availability vary by model and firmware; GL.iNet identifies Login Mode and Camouflage as available in firmware v4.6 and above. See the vendor’s firmware v4 captive-portal instructions.

There is a privacy trade-off. GL.iNet warns in its documentation that, in Login Mode, some services are suspended and DNS switches to automatic, which may expose network activity to the hotspot provider, such as a hotel. Consider this before enabling it. After completing the portal, restore your usual VPN or DNS configuration if appropriate.

If the portal still does not appear

  • Temporarily turn off the router’s VPN client while signing in. A VPN can interfere with reaching the hotel’s login page. Re-enable it after authentication if that is part of your normal setup.
  • If you use an older GL.iNet firmware v3 device, its legacy guide discusses changing DNS Rebinding Attack Protection for some captive-portal cases. This is a model- and firmware-specific suggestion, not a universal router setting; follow the instructions for your device rather than changing unrelated security controls. See GL.iNet’s firmware v3 guide.

Check whether the hotel limits or registers devices

Some hotels limit the number of devices a guest can connect or associate authorization with a device’s MAC address. Ask hotel staff whether the property uses either restriction before changing router settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the hotel allows it and the router supports it, GL.iNet documents cloning an already-authorized device’s MAC address as a possible workaround. Use the address the phone actually presents on that hotel network: modern phones may use a private or randomized Wi-Fi address rather than their factory address. GL.iNet also cautions that the client address displayed by its router may not be the device’s physical address. On supported GL.iNet repeater interfaces, MAC behavior may be set to factory, clone, or random and saved per SSID; labels and controls depend on firmware. Refer to the vendor’s captive-portal instructions and repeater reference.

If you clone the phone’s address onto the router, do not connect the phone and router to the hotel network using that same address at the same time. If the router does not reconnect automatically after the change, follow its prompts to reconnect or reboot.

Ask hotel staff when local settings are not enough

A hotel may require a verification method or authorization that the router cannot complete on its own. Ask whether travel routers are permitted, whether the hotel can register or whitelist the router, and whether it offers another login method. GL.iNet recommends asking hotel staff to whitelist the router’s factory-assigned MAC address if its portal steps fail. Hotel policy ultimately determines whether access is allowed; router configuration cannot override that policy.
