A successful request can still return data that no longer belongs on the screen. If you change a search or filter while the first request is still running, the newer results may arrive first—and an older response can then overwrite them. The fix is to let the UI commit a response only when it still matches the active view.

Why old results can replace new ones

Suppose you search for sho, then quickly refine the query to shoes. The app sends request A for the first query, then request B for the second. Networks and servers do not guarantee that requests finish in the order they were sent:

  1. Request A starts for sho.
  2. Request B starts for shoes.
  3. B returns first, so the screen correctly shows results for shoes.
  4. A returns later. If its callback writes to the same state without checking whether it is still relevant, the screen shows results for sho beneath the shoes query.

That is an out-of-order completion problem, not necessarily a failed request. React’s useEffect documentation explicitly warns that network responses may arrive in a different order than requests were sent, and demonstrates suppressing obsolete updates.

What “response ownership” means

A response belongs to the view state and request that produced it—not automatically to whichever screen happens to be visible when it arrives. A server’s successful response means the server completed its part; it does not decide whether the result is still current for the user’s screen.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A useful rule is: apply a response only if it still belongs to the view that asked for it. The UI can enforce that rule with an effect cleanup, a request identity, matching query parameters, or data stored under a cache key for those parameters. Protect every piece of state derived from the response—such as results, counts, facets, errors, and loading indicators—so they remain consistent with one view.

Ways to prevent stale UI updates

Approach Prevents stale commits? Stops supported network or body work? Useful when
Effect cleanup or ignore flag Yes, if the update checks the flag No A request is scoped to a component effect, or the work cannot be canceled
Request identity or parameter check Yes, if only the active identity or matching parameters can commit No Several requests can overlap and the latest view must be identified explicitly
Abort obsolete fetch Not by itself; pair with a commit rule Can abort supported fetch, body consumption, and streams before completion Old fetch work is no longer useful and accepts an abort signal
Query-keyed cache Associates each result with its query; the screen must read the right key Not inherently Results need stable ownership and possible reuse across views

Effect cleanup or an ignore flag

React’s Effect fetching example initializes an ignore flag, sets it during cleanup, and checks it before updating state. When an effect is cleaned up because its inputs changed or its component lifecycle moved on, a late response from the old effect is ignored. This pattern is useful even when the underlying operation has no cancellation mechanism.

Request identity or parameter checks

Another option is to give each request an incrementing version and allow only the current version to commit. Or capture the complete query inputs and check that they still match the active view when the response arrives. The important part is putting the check at the state update, rather than assuming completion order will match request order.

let requestVersion = 0;

async function loadForCurrentView(params) {
  const version = ++requestVersion;
  const result = await fetchData(params);
  if (version !== requestVersion) return; // no longer belongs to the active request
  renderResult(result);
}

This is an illustrative pattern, not tested code. A component may need a version scoped to that component or view rather than a global variable, depending on how requests are shared.

Abort obsolete fetch work

AbortController provides an AbortSignal to asynchronous work; calling abort() can stop a fetch request, response-body consumption, and streams before they complete. See the MDN AbortController reference, last modified 2025-09-17. Cancellation can save work when the operation supports the signal and its result is no longer needed. It is separate from deciding whether a result may update the UI: supported cancellation does not remove the need for a safe commit rule in cases where work cannot be reliably canceled or has already completed.

Query-keyed cache

With a cache keyed by the full set of query inputs, results for one filter have a stable home instead of being written into one undifferentiated “current results” slot. The displayed view can then select data associated with its own key. Libraries differ in cancellation, invalidation, and cache semantics, so check the documentation for the specific library in use. React also notes that manual fetching in Effects can make caching and server rendering harder; an appropriate framework or data-loading mechanism may handle those concerns more systematically.

Debouncing helps, but does not establish correctness

Debouncing a search field reduces how often requests are started while someone is typing. It does not guarantee that only one request is in flight: an earlier request can still finish after a later one. Treat debouncing as a way to reduce request frequency, not as a substitute for checking ownership before committing results.

When the server accepts work that is not finished

Some requests start work that takes longer than an ordinary page fetch. In that case, an HTTP 202 Accepted response means processing was accepted but is not complete; it is not a completed result. Microsoft’s Asynchronous Request-Reply Pattern describes returning a status URL in Location and having the client poll it until the operation completes or fails. Microsoft’s Web API design guidance likewise describes a status endpoint for accepted, incomplete work.

For polling, follow the service’s contract rather than assuming every API behaves the same. The contract should clarify the status URL, status values, polling interval or Retry-After, expiration, and cancellation behavior. A completed operation may point to a separate resource URL. The operation’s server-side status still does not determine whether its result belongs to the screen currently displayed.

Retries also need care: if a submission was accepted but its response was lost, resubmitting may enqueue duplicate work. Microsoft’s pattern discusses idempotency keys so a retry can return the existing operation instead of creating another. Canceling server-side work may also require partial rollback or a compensating transaction, which the service must define.

Diagnose the bug at the commit point

  • Record the query or filter associated with each request when it starts.
  • Compare the response’s request identity with the currently active view when the update is about to run.
  • Check whether secondary state—counts, facets, errors, or loading status—is being updated by a stale response too.
  • Use cancellation to reduce unnecessary work where supported, but retain a guard for updates that must not commit.
  • For long-running operations, distinguish a submission acknowledgement from the operation’s final status and follow the service’s polling contract.
