When several customers share a student-house or university network, they may leave the network through the same public IP address. An IP-keyed rate limiter can therefore count their requests together, even when each customer has a separate licence. In Daniel Pertu’s Notifio example, the solution is to key notification limits by licence token and give the notification route its own counter namespace.

Why a shared IP can combine unrelated customers

An IP address identifies a network connection point, not necessarily the person or account making a request. A student house, university residence, office, or coworking space may route many people’s traffic through one public address using network address translation (NAT). If a service counts requests only by IP, one customer’s activity can use up capacity intended for another.

Pertu illustrates the issue with a six-person student house: the residents may each have bought a separate Notifio licence, yet share one external IP address. That scenario is an example, not a measured finding. In this design, the licence token is a closer match for the customer identity whose notification activity the service wants to bound. Daniel Pertu’s Notifio article on DEV Community describes that implementation.

Choose the rate-limit key for the identity being bounded

Pertu’s advice is: “Rate limit the identity you are actually protecting.” For a paid notification feature, a valid licence token can separate the budgets of customers behind the same NAT. IP-based limits can still be useful for controlling unauthenticated traffic or broader abuse; the key depends on the resource, the point at which identity becomes trustworthy, and the threat model.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Key choice What it represents Effect for users behind shared NAT Practical consideration
IP address The apparent network egress point Requests from separate customers may share a counter Useful as a fallback for requests without a usable account identity, but it does not distinguish customers behind that address
Licence token The application-level customer identity in Pertu’s design Each licence can have its own counter even when customers share an IP Validate the licence and avoid exposing credential details in error responses

This does not make licence-based limiting a universal replacement for IP controls. A request may arrive before the application can identify a valid licence, and an attacker may target resources outside the per-licence budget. Use additional controls where the threat model requires them.

Keep notification and validation traffic in separate buckets

Changing the identity key does not by itself isolate one endpoint from another. Pertu uses one Redis-backed limiter instance with a sliding-window example of 20 requests per 10 seconds. That is the author’s configuration example, not a generally recommended quota. The limiter key includes the prefix notify:, so notification requests use a different counter namespace from validation requests such as /api/validate.

Without endpoint-specific namespaces, frequent validation calls could consume capacity that the application intends for notification requests. The prefix separates those counters while allowing both routes to use the same limiter instance.

How the notification route applies the limits and checks

The described /api/notify route accepts a type discriminator for four kinds of email: new listings, authentication failures, blocked sites, and reply confirmations. Its key is built from the licence token when present, or from the first forwarded IP value as a fallback:

notify:${token || ip}

The fallback gives requests without a token a bounded bucket rather than leaving them in an unlimited shared bucket. A missing token is still rejected by later licence checks; the fallback is not a substitute for authorization.

The route checks the licence, the associated email match, whether the licence is active, and whether the payload has the expected shape before sending. For missing, mismatched, or inactive licence information, the implementation returns the same 403 message rather than revealing which credential detail was valid.

Return status codes that let the client respond correctly

The implementation distinguishes request problems from delivery failures. Pertu presents these responses as actionable signals for a client that may not be quickly redeployed:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Response Meaning in the described contract
400 Malformed payload
403 Licence is invalid or inactive, including missing or mismatched licence information
429 Rate limit reached
502 Email delivery failed

A successful response should mean the notification was actually delivered. In this app, the desktop client updates its “already seen” baseline only after delivery; reporting success when sending failed could suppress a later alert. As Pertu puts it, “Never return success for work you did not do.”

Treat listing content as untrusted email input

Listing titles and URLs may originate outside the application. The described implementation escapes that text before inserting it into HTML email, and provides both HTML and plain-text versions of each email. Escaping helps prevent third-party text from being interpreted as markup in the HTML body; the plain-text counterpart also gives recipients a non-HTML rendering.

When this design fits—and what it does not establish

Per-licence counters fit the described case where the application is protecting a paid customer’s notification budget and a licence is the relevant account identity. Endpoint prefixes matter when routes share a limiter but should not consume one another’s allowance. Neither choice alone establishes an appropriate quota or covers every abuse path: set limits according to the resource being protected, validate identity before granting the corresponding budget, and retain a suitable fallback for requests that lack a valid identity.

The source article’s “20 requests per 10 seconds” is a code configuration example, not a benchmark or general threshold. Its student-house scenario is illustrative; it does not report a study or measured prevalence of shared-IP account conflicts.
