In Vite SSR Boost, a suspicious document request such as /.env should be rejected with a plain 404 before React renders. That behavior comes from this project’s request guard—not from React SSR generally—and it is separate from what the router does when a normal document URL simply has no matching route.
What the Vite SSR Boost guard rejects
Melissa Ashford’s September 22, 2026 article for Lomray Software describes a default-on guard in Vite SSR Boost. The project’s README also summarizes a guard that checks document methods and targets before hooks. No exact package release number is stated, so verify these settings against the version installed in your app.
Under the article’s described defaults, GET requests for /.env, /random.php, or an unmatched file-like path such as /missing.xml receive a plain 404 rather than entering the React render path. This is request handling, not evidence that an application has exposed credentials. The guard rejects suspicious document targets; it does not establish that a secret was accessed or leaked.
Methods are checked before hooks
The guard allows GET, HEAD, and POST by default. Other methods receive 405 with an Allow header before onRequest, HTML loading, or route loaders run. If your application needs CORS preflight requests to reach a hook, add OPTIONS to requestGuard.methods. The configured array replaces the defaults, so include any of GET, HEAD, and POST that the application still needs.

Allowed methods still face target validation
A permitted method does not guarantee that a target reaches routing. The described guard returns 414 for an oversized target and 400 for a malformed path. It returns a plain 404 for the suspicious or unmatched examples above, while a matched resource route such as /sitemap.xml can pass. A 404 for a rejected target is therefore not the same decision as a 404 produced because the router could not find a page.
How ordinary missing routes differ
For an ordinary unmatched document such as /missing, the described notFound default is render: the request follows the normal router/render path. The available missing-page modes change both the response and which work occurs.

A catch-all route is considered a match, so it may prevent the ordinary unmatched-route behavior from applying. If guard logic should treat a catch-all match as missing, return 'notFound' from requestGuard.decide to select a missing-page mode.
Use cached 404s only for public output
In the described cached mode, the default cache key is shared across missing paths and incorporates the first rendered URL and hydration data. Cold renders use GET without the original request body. Cookie and Authorization headers are removed before the request hook, but other headers, the URL, and application state may still affect the output.

- Keep session state and other private information out of HTML that can be reused across requests.
- Choose cache keys that distinguish public variations the output actually depends on, such as locale.
- Avoid this mode for session-dependent pages; ordinary rendering is the safer fit when missing-page output is personalized.
- A configured CSP nonce disables the cache. Failed renders and responses that are not 404s are not retained.
- Inspect document header rules: they can override the stated default
private, no-storeheader.
Admission limits are a separate control
Request guarding and SSR admission control address different work. In the article’s account, admission is off by default and can be enabled with a positive safe integer in admission.maxConcurrency or a valid SSR_MAX_CONCURRENCY environment value. The environment value takes precedence and is read when the handler or entry is created. The limit is local to that handler, not cluster-wide.
Admission happens only after request initialization and the SSR/SPA decision. Consequently, a request rejected for capacity has already passed through onRequest and HTML loading; admission is not a way to prevent all request processing. There is no queue. At capacity, the described default response is 503 with Retry-After and private, no-store. With admission.overload: 'spa', detected bots receive 503 while humans receive a 200 shell. That overload shell is not the same as missing-page SPA mode, which returns 404. For normal streamed responses, a slot remains occupied until the Fetch response stream is consumed.

Checks worth running in your app
- If preflight handling matters, send an OPTIONS request and confirm whether it reaches the intended hook after you configure the method list.
- Request multiple missing URLs and confirm that no private or session-specific data is shared between their responses, especially if using cached 404s.
- To check admission behavior, hold one response stream open and send another SSR request when the configured capacity is reached; observe the status and headers returned.
Confirm behavior for your installed version
The detailed defaults above are attributed to Ashford’s article, while the project README provides a higher-level description of the guard and configurable 404 modes. The README follows the repository’s mutable prod branch, so its current text may not match an older installed package. Check the documentation and configuration for the exact version deployed before relying on a particular status, hook order, cache policy, or bot behavior.
