A pay-gap cost calculator should do its arithmetic in your browser, without sending the figures you enter to a server. Pay and salary figures can be personal information, and a calculator does not need to transmit them simply to compute a result. This is a privacy-preserving design recommendation—not a rule that every calculator is legally required to make zero network requests.
What “zero network calls” means in practice
A website has to be delivered to your browser before its code can run. Here, “zero network calls” means that after the page and calculator code have loaded, entering figures and calculating a result do not trigger requests to a server or another service.
A calculator can meet that boundary by running bundled, client-side code. The arithmetic happens on the device, so the entered values do not need to be posted to an API, included in a request URL, or sent to analytics as part of the calculation.
This wording is narrower than saying “your figures are never sent anywhere.” A page might still load remote fonts, analytics, advertisements, or other third-party resources. Without checking the particular implementation and observing its network activity, it is not possible to verify that a specific calculator makes no such requests—or that it works offline.

Why pay figures deserve careful handling
Salary information can be personal information. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) gives salary as an example of information about workers that an organisation may hold to meet its obligation to pay them. Whether figures entered in a particular calculator legally count as personal data depends on what they reveal and whether they identify or can be linked to a person. ICO guidance on collecting and keeping employment records explains the employment-record context.
For an individual user, even figures that do not name anyone may be sensitive in context: a small team, a distinctive role, or a particular pay band might make the people behind the numbers identifiable. Keeping inputs on the device avoids creating an unnecessary transmission just to perform arithmetic.

How data-protection principles support local calculation
GDPR Article 25 requires controllers to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to put data-protection principles into effect, considering the processing context, implementation costs, and risks. It also requires that, by default, only personal data necessary for each specific purpose be processed. The official EU GDPR Article 25 text sets out these obligations.
The ICO describes data protection by design and default as considering privacy from the outset and limiting personal information to what is necessary for a specific purpose. It says the appropriate measures depend on the circumstances and risks. For a calculator whose job is to do arithmetic, local computation is a straightforward way to avoid sending input values to a server for that task. It is a design choice supported by data minimisation—not a specific architecture mandated by Article 25. See the ICO’s data protection by design and by default guidance.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Google Chrome’s developer guidance also treats data minimisation as a web privacy principle, recommending that developers collect only what is needed for the immediate task. This is design guidance, not law. Google Chrome’s Web Privacy Guidelines for Developers provides that perspective.
What to look for in a calculator’s privacy claim
A privacy-policy statement alone does not establish what happens when you calculate. A clear and credible claim should distinguish calculation traffic from other page activity and explain the implementation or evidence behind it.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Where the arithmetic runs: Does the calculator compute in the browser, or send inputs to a server for processing?
- What leaves the device: Are inputs or results included in API requests, URLs, analytics events, or another transmission during calculation?
- Other page requests: Does the page use bundled code, or load external scripts, analytics, ads, or remote assets? These may create network activity even if the calculation itself is local.
- Persistence and sharing: Are values kept only for the current session, saved, embedded in a shareable URL, or deliberately submitted?
- Evidence for the claim: Is the claim supported by the calculator’s architecture and observed request behavior, or only by a general privacy-policy assertion?
For the practical question “Does this calculator send my pay data anywhere?”, the useful answer should state what happens to the figures during calculation and separately describe any other data collection or page requests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is zero network activity a legal requirement?
The cited legal and design guidance does not establish a universal rule that every pay-gap calculator must make zero network requests. Article 25 calls for appropriate measures based on the processing purpose, context, and risks; it does not prescribe a particular web architecture. Local calculation is a strong way to reduce unnecessary exposure when the task can be completed in the browser, but the legal assessment depends on the actual processing and circumstances.
