First identify where the failure happens: the game may be missing from your library, stuck or failing during download and installation, or installed but unable to launch. Those problems call for different checks. Also confirm whether you’re using an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, because a game listed for Xbox is not necessarily compatible with every console.
Start by identifying the problem
Note what you see before changing settings. Is the game absent from your library, waiting in a download queue, stopping during installation, or installed but refusing to open? If an error appears, keep its exact wording or code; it can help distinguish a compatibility issue from a download or launch problem.
If the game is missing from your library
Check Ready to install on Xbox One
On Xbox One, open My games & apps > Ready to install and look for the game. Microsoft recommends this check when a game or app does not appear in the library. See Microsoft’s Xbox library and compatibility guidance.

If Xbox reports that the game or app is incompatible, verify that a version exists for your specific console. Microsoft notes that some apps and games work only on particular device types. A free-to-play label does not guarantee compatibility across Xbox generations, and a PC listing does not establish that a console version is available.

If the download will not start or keeps stopping
Confirm the console can reach online services
Check that the console is connected to the internet and can reach Xbox services. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S service guide includes a network test over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, checking for system updates, and testing whether a digital game launches. These checks can help narrow down a problem, but a successful network test does not by itself rule out account, storage, compatibility, or game-service issues. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if practical
If you suspect Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection to the router if one is available. This is a useful comparison, not a universal fix; it will not resolve an Xbox service outage, account issue, storage limit, compatibility problem, or game-specific server problem. You do not need to buy a cable just to try the other troubleshooting checks.

Check for a system update
Look for an available console system update as part of troubleshooting. Microsoft includes this check in its Xbox Series S service test. The guide is a diagnostic aid, not a guarantee that an update will fix a failed download.

Try a normal restart before more disruptive steps
A game publisher’s Xbox Series X|S instructions for MIO: Memories in Orbit include restarting or power cycling the console. Follow the instructions for your game where available; these steps are an example, not a guaranteed fix for every free Xbox title. The publisher says of its restart process: “This process does not erase any of your games or data.” A restart is not the same as a factory reset.

Check system software and Home Xbox status
The same MIO: Memories in Orbit support page recommends checking for an Xbox system-software update and confirming the console is designated as Home Xbox. Treat these as title-specific troubleshooting suggestions and consult your game publisher’s support instructions when they exist. Reinstall only if simpler checks fail
The publisher also lists uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Before doing so, check the publisher’s guidance for your title and consider whether you may need to download the game again. Do not confuse reinstalling a game with resetting the whole console.

When to contact Xbox Support
If the game still will not download or launch, contact Xbox Support for console-specific installation help. Microsoft directs users with Xbox console installation problems to Xbox Support: Microsoft Support.
