Start by checking Notifications > Downloads, PlayStation Network service status, your PS4 system software, and available storage. Then retry the game from Library > Purchased. A download that will not start, a game locked to an account, and a file that fails to install have different likely causes, so work through the checks below in order.

PS4 game won’t download: check the queue and service status
A free game selected from the PlayStation Store should appear in Library > Purchased. Select it and choose Download; it installs automatically when the download completes. If it does not begin, check whether it is paused or waiting in the queue before deleting anything.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- From the PS4 function screen, open Notifications > Downloads.
- Select the game and choose Pause, then Resume.
- If it still will not start, select the download, choose Cancel and Delete, and try again from Library > Purchased.
- Check PlayStation service status. If Sony reports a service alert, wait until service is restored before retrying.
Canceling and retrying is a queue fix; it will not resolve a missing entitlement, insufficient space, or a service outage.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Confirm the game belongs to the account you’re using
Digital games are associated with the account that obtained them. Make sure you are signed in to the account whose Library > Purchased list contains the game. If the game is present but shows a padlock, or an expected game or add-on is missing, restoring licenses may help.
- Open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- Select Restore and follow the prompts.
- Return to Library > Purchased, select the game, and try Download again.
If relevant to how the game is shared on the console, check that the PS4 is activated as the purchasing account’s primary PS4. License restoration addresses access or license issues; it does not free storage or fix an active network or PlayStation service problem.

Check storage before retrying
Games have different storage requirements. On the game’s PlayStation Store page on the console, scroll to Details and check its minimum free-space requirement. Compare that with the available space under Settings > Storage.
Recommended Free Tools
- If space is insufficient, delete an application from the content launcher or Library: highlight it, press OPTIONS, then choose Delete.
- Sony says deleted games can be downloaded again from Library. Deleting an application is not the same as initializing the PS4.
- If you need more capacity, Sony lists USB extended storage and upgrading the PS4 HDD as options. Check the console’s current compatibility requirements before choosing a drive.
PS4 download stuck: test the connection
If the download has started but stops making progress, check PlayStation service status and test the console’s connection at Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. If service is available and the connection test does not reveal an issue, retry the download from the queue or Library. A wired connection is one of Sony’s recommended steps for certain application errors, if it is practical for your setup.

Game downloaded but won’t install: check for a corrupted file or error code
Installation failures are not always the same as a download that will not start. Note any error code shown on screen; Sony’s guidance for specific codes points to different causes.
| Error code | What Sony says it indicates | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| CE-37704-1 | The download was canceled because there was not enough HDD space. | Check the game’s Store Details requirement against Settings > Storage, then free space and retry. |
| CE-34679-9 | An identical file is already saved on the console, preventing the game from downloading. | Review the existing saved content and Sony’s guidance for the code before retrying; do not assume this is a network problem. |
| CE-37732-2 | The downloaded file was not installed properly and may have been corrupted during download. | In Notifications > Downloads, highlight the content, press OPTIONS, and delete it. For a patch, highlight the game and choose OPTIONS > Check for Update; for a Store game, download it again from Library. |
| CE-41839-5 | Sony’s application-error guidance includes a download or application failure. | Update system software, fully restart the PS4, restore licenses, then delete and redownload the application—using a wired connection if possible. If the problem persists, rebuild the database; initialization is a later, data-erasing step that requires a backup. |
These code descriptions and steps follow Sony’s PS4 error-code guidance, corrupted-data guidance, and application-error guidance. If your displayed code differs, look up that exact code rather than applying a fix for a different one.

Update system software and rebuild the database if basic checks fail
Make sure the PS4 system software is current. If queue, service, account, network, and storage checks have not resolved the issue, Sony lists rebuilding the database from Safe Mode as a troubleshooting step for persistent download problems. It is distinct from initializing the console.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Turn off the PS4, then start it in Safe Mode using Sony’s current Safe Mode instructions.
- Choose Rebuild Database and follow the on-screen directions.
- After the console restarts, check the download again in Notifications > Downloads or retry it from Library > Purchased.
Do not choose Initialize PS4 as a routine next step. Sony says initialization erases all console data and advises backing up before attempting it. Do not use unofficial system software files or interrupt a system software installation.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| What you see | Check first |
|---|---|
| Download will not start | Notifications queue, service status, then retry through Library. |
| Download is stuck | Service status and Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. |
| Padlock or game missing from the expected list | Correct account, Library entitlement, and restore licenses. |
| Not enough space or CE-37704-1 | Store Details requirement and Settings > Storage. |
| Download completed but installation failed or CE-37732-2 appears | Delete the affected download and retry the patch or Store game using Sony’s code-specific steps. |
| Persistent failure after simpler checks | System software update, then Safe Mode database rebuild; reserve initialization for last resort. |
For Sony’s full download troubleshooting steps, see PS4 game download problems, Restore licenses, and PS4 USB extended storage. If your region uses different support pages or console labels, use the local PlayStation Support guidance.
