A movie shown in the Apple TV app may not be free to watch: the app lists Apple TV subscription shows, third-party services, and titles to rent or buy. Open the movie’s details and check its viewing options and provider first. If you do have access, work through service status, sign-in, network, and device checks in that order.
First check whether the movie is actually included
The Apple TV app is a place to find and watch content from different sources; its presence in the app does not mean every listed movie is included at no extra cost. Apple says an Apple TV subscription does not include third-party-branded services or content available to rent or buy. The app’s “Free · In-App Purchases” store label describes downloading the app, not free access to every movie. Apple Support explains the difference between Apple TV subscription content and other services.
- Open the movie’s page in the Apple TV app.
- Review its viewing options and identify the service or provider shown. If it offers a rental or purchase, that is not included just because the movie appears in the app.
- Confirm you are signed in to, or subscribed to, the service that supplies the movie. If it is from another provider, that provider’s access and account rules apply.
If the page asks you to subscribe, rent, or buy, that points to an access issue rather than a playback failure. If the movie is included in a service you can use, continue with the checks below.
Check whether the service or your account is the problem
Look for an outage
Check Apple System Status. If another streaming service supplies the movie, check that provider’s status too. A service outage can prevent playback even when your access is valid; try again after the service recovers. Apple’s playback troubleshooting guide recommends checking service status.

Confirm Apple Account sign-in
Make sure the Apple Account shown on your device is the one you use for the relevant Apple TV subscription or channel. If you cannot sign in or complete verification, follow Apple’s account recovery and verification guidance. For a movie supplied by a third party, also confirm the account or subscription required by that provider.

Test the connection on another device
Try playing something on another device connected to the same network. If several devices fail on that connection, focus on the network or a service outage; if only one device has trouble, focus on its app, software, compatibility, or settings. Apple states that HD streaming requires 8 Mbit/s or faster. That is Apple’s stated threshold for HD, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback or a universal requirement for every quality level. Apple’s troubleshooting guide provides the threshold and recommends testing another device.

- If you are using cellular data and the connection is weak, try Wi-Fi.
- If multiple devices on the same network have trouble, contact your internet provider or network administrator.
- If playback is poor while other people are using the connection, ask them to pause high-bandwidth activity temporarily.
A wired connection can be a useful test only if both your viewing device and router have Ethernet ports. It is not a fix for a missing subscription, unavailable movie, or service outage.

If other people in your household are watching Apple TV subscription or channel content, the applicable simultaneous-stream limit may have been reached. Check whether another stream is using the same service, then try again. Limits can depend on the service or channel supplying the movie.

Update and restart the device
- Install available updates for the Apple TV app and the device’s operating system.
- Restart the device you are watching on, then reopen the app and try the movie again.
- On a smart TV or streaming device, check whether your model is supported using Apple’s Apple TV app compatibility information. For installation problems or device internet issues, contact the device manufacturer.
The exact update and restart menus vary by device. Apple’s troubleshooting steps cover Apple devices and PCs, while smart-TV and streaming-device controls are set by their manufacturers.
Try downloading the movie, if the option is available
On a device that supports downloads, try downloading the title and playing the downloaded copy. Apple suggests this as an alternative to streaming. Download availability depends on the title, provider, region, and device, so the option may not appear for every movie.

Reset the Apple TV app only as a last resort
If the app remains unresponsive after the earlier checks, resetting it may help. Apple warns that resetting erases personal information and restores the app’s original settings; you may need to sign in and configure it again. The reset option and its location can vary by device. Follow Apple’s instructions for resetting the Apple TV app for your device rather than assuming every version has the same menu.

Apple notes that not all features and content are available in every country or region or on every device. A title, service, or app feature available to someone elsewhere may not be available where you are, or on your device. Check the movie’s details and Apple’s country and region availability information; verify device compatibility as well.
What to include if it still will not play
If these checks do not resolve the problem, note the movie title, your country or region, viewing device, service or subscription, and the exact error message. Those details help Apple or the relevant provider distinguish a title-access issue from a device, account, or connection problem.
