If a digital magazine will not open, display properly, or finish downloading, first identify where you are reading it: in a publisher’s app, a digital newsstand app, or a web browser. Then check the internet connection and device storage before trying app or account fixes. A missing purchase, a damaged download, and a delayed new issue need different solutions.
Start by identifying how you read the magazine
Are you using the publisher’s app, a newsstand app, or a browser? This matters because offline access differs by service and reading route. Some mobile apps let you read an issue offline after downloading it; a web reader may need an active internet connection. Libby says its mobile magazines are not automatically downloaded, and its website requires internet access. PCWorld likewise distinguishes its internet-dependent web app from issues downloaded in its app. See Libby’s offline-use guidance and the PCWorld digital magazine FAQs.
If you are using a browser, test the page while connected. If you are using an app, check whether the issue has actually finished downloading before assuming it should open offline.

Test the internet connection
Open another website or app that uses the internet. If that also fails, try a different Wi-Fi network or cellular data if available, then retry the magazine. A slow or interrupted connection can prevent an issue from loading or completing its download.

On an iPhone or iPad using Safari, also consider whether a VPN is interfering. Apple notes that some apps or websites may block content when a VPN is on; review your VPN settings and test again. See Apple’s Safari troubleshooting steps.
Make room for the download
Check the device’s available storage. If space is low, remove old magazine downloads or other files you no longer need, then try again. Before deleting an issue, confirm you can download it again. Google Play’s basic download troubleshooting includes checking storage; Great Magazines also recommends deleting old issues to free space.

Fix an app that crashes, opens blank, or stops responding
- Close and reopen the app. Then try opening the magazine again.
- Restart the device if reopening the app does not help.
- Check for app and operating-system updates and install any available updates.
- Try the issue again. If the problem continues, follow the app or platform’s specific cache or data instructions rather than deleting data at random.
These are among Apple’s recommended steps when an iPhone or iPad app stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or will not open. Clearing app data or reinstalling may remove downloaded issues and settings, so be prepared to download content again. See Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance.
Repair an issue that opens with missing pages or blank content
If other issues work but one has blank pages, missing pages, or incomplete content, the local download may be damaged. Remove that issue’s download from the app, then download it again. If the problem remains, use the platform’s cache or data guidance; clearing app data can remove saved downloads and settings. Google Play Newsstand’s troubleshooting guidance includes removing and downloading an issue again.

Find a purchased issue that is missing from your library
- Check the signed-in account. Make sure it is the account used for the purchase or subscription.
- Confirm how you obtained the issue. A purchase through a publisher may not appear under a different account or platform’s purchase history.
- Use “Restore purchases” if the publisher’s app provides that option.
- Contact the publisher or platform if the issue is still absent and ask them to verify the account entitlement.
A missing issue may be an account or purchase-entitlement problem rather than a download failure. Google Play Newsstand and Great Magazines both advise checking account or purchase access when issues are missing; see Google Play Help and Great Magazines’ digital magazine FAQs.
Troubleshoot a browser reader that will not load
First test another website and, if possible, another network. If the failure is limited to Safari on an iPhone or iPad, Apple’s guidance includes checking VPN settings, restarting the device, clearing website data, and confirming JavaScript is enabled. Browser controls and menu names can vary by device and software version; follow the current settings on your device. Check whether the latest issue has been released
If an older issue opens but the newest one is missing, check the publisher’s release schedule or issue availability before changing device settings. Google Play Help advises Google Play Newsstand users to check again after 24 hours when a new issue is delayed, then contact support if it remains unavailable.
