Firefox is made by Mozilla Corporation, which is wholly owned by the not-for-profit Mozilla Foundation. The Foundation is the parent owner; the Corporation develops Firefox with the Mozilla community.
Who owns Firefox?
Mozilla’s official Firefox FAQ says Firefox is made by Mozilla Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the not-for-profit Mozilla Foundation. That is the ownership chain: Mozilla Foundation → Mozilla Corporation → Firefox. Mozilla’s organizations page describes the Foundation as the parent and the Corporation as its subsidiary; Firefox’s FAQ identifies the Corporation as the browser’s maker.
What do the Foundation and Corporation do?
Mozilla Foundation: parent and nonprofit governance
Mozilla describes the Foundation as a California nonprofit corporation exempt from federal income tax under IRC 501(c)(3). It supports the Mozilla community and oversees Mozilla governance. The nonprofit status belongs to the Foundation; Mozilla identifies the Corporation as a taxable subsidiary. Mozilla’s organizations page explains these roles.
Mozilla Corporation: software development
The Corporation works with the community to develop software that advances Mozilla’s principles, including Firefox. Mozilla’s current organizational overview also identifies Mozilla Corporation as the organization that makes Firefox.

Community: contributors, not another owner
Community participation is distinct from ownership. Mozilla says the Corporation develops software with the community, and it distinguishes its official entities from independent formal or informal community organizations that have no official relationship with the Foundation. A Mozilla-branded community group is not automatically an owner.
Does nonprofit ownership mean Firefox has no commercial revenue?
No. The ownership structure alone does not establish that Firefox is funded only by donations, nor does it show how much revenue comes from any particular source. Mozilla publishes annual reports, Form 990 filings, audited financial statements, and governance documents; its annual reports and financials index lists disclosure materials. Mozilla’s 2025 report describes the broader Mozilla entities as owned and controlled by a nonprofit parent, with profits available to support and expand nonprofit activities. That is Mozilla’s account of its structure and goals, not a claim that the Corporation has no taxable commercial activity.

What does Mozilla say about Firefox’s reach?
In its State of Mozilla 2025 report, Mozilla Corporation says it is trusted by over 200 million people. Treat that as the Corporation’s reported figure, not as an independently measured user count. The same report identifies growing Firefox as a leading aim for Mozilla Corporation.
