As of October 3, 2026, Tyler Adams is captain of the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT). Head coach Mauricio Pochettino announced his appointment on October 2 ahead of the USA–Mexico match. The captain wears an identifying armband and has a degree of responsibility for the team’s behaviour, but the Laws of the Game give the role no special status or privileges.
Who is the USMNT captain?
Tyler Adams, a midfielder for AFC Bournemouth, was named USMNT captain by head coach Mauricio Pochettino on October 2, 2026, according to U.S. Soccer’s appointment announcement. The appointment came ahead of the USA–Mexico match scheduled for October 3. Because captaincy can change, this answer is dated: it reflects the announcement available as of October 3, 2026.
Pochettino said Adams was “the player and the person that can lead the period that we have ahead.” Adams called the appointment an honor and said he would work to lead the group toward a winning culture.

What does the captain do during a match?
Under the 2025/26 Laws of the Game, each team must have a captain on the field, identifiable by an armband. The armband identifies the captain; it does not confer authority over the referee or special control over match decisions. The Laws say the captain has “no special status or privileges,” while assigning the captain “a degree of responsibility for the behaviour of the team.” See IFAB’s 2025/26 Laws of the Game changes.

Some competitions may apply the “Only the captain” guidelines, which are intended to support cooperation between players and referees. Their application depends on the competition, so they should not be treated as a universal captain’s privilege.
What does leadership mean for Adams?
Beyond the formal match rules, U.S. Soccer described Adams as helping set the tone and standards in camp, including bringing newcomers together with World Cup veterans. That is the federation’s account of Adams’s leadership in this team, not a job description imposed by the Laws.

Adams said the armband would not change who he is: “Getting the armband doesn’t mean anything to me in being a leader or different in who I am,” he said. He framed the responsibility as continuing to build the team and helping establish a winning culture.

Who captained the USMNT before Adams?
Tim Ream captained the team through the 2026 World Cup and announced his international retirement later that year, shortly before Adams’s appointment. U.S. Soccer reported that Ream made 86 appearances and captained Pochettino’s team 23 times. These are figures reported by the federation in 2026; the 23-captaincy figure refers specifically to Pochettino’s team. See U.S. Soccer’s Tim Ream recognition announcement.

U.S. Soccer also reported that Adams was 23 years and 288 days old when he captained the United States at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, making him the youngest captain at that tournament and the youngest American captain since Walter Bahr in 1950. The age refers to Adams’s age at the 2022 World Cup, not his age when named captain in 2026.
