Which WordPress.com plan should you choose?
Start with the first requirement that your site cannot do without. The table compares WordPress.com’s five hosted plans; it does not compare self-hosted WordPress.org hosting providers.

When Free is enough
Choose Free if you need a hosted place to publish posts and pages, basic traffic statistics, and the listed 1 GB media allowance—and can work without a custom primary domain or plugins. It can be a practical way to validate a blog, portfolio, or simple site before paying for a feature you do not yet need. Upgrade when a specific requirement becomes a blocker.

When to choose Personal or Premium
Choose Personal for a custom domain or plugin installation
Personal is the entry point when you want a custom primary domain or the ability to install plugins. WordPress.com says plugin installation is available on paid plans, but a select few plugins are not permitted. Check whether a required plugin is compatible before choosing a plan. Choose Premium for additional design, promotion, or payment tools
Premium adds features such as Google Analytics, SEO controls, monetization, payment collection, and additional blocks. It may suit a site that needs these capabilities but does not require Business-level backups and developer access or a Commerce store setup. If your main goal is collecting payments rather than running a full online shop, compare the lower-plan payment options and their transaction fees before upgrading.
When Business is worth choosing
Business is the plan to consider when automated recovery or developer-level access is a requirement. WordPress.com lists daily backups for eligible sites and tools including SFTP, WP-CLI, database access, and staging. Its backup guide says backups run at least every 24 hours and eligible sites can restore from backups in the preceding six months. If a plan is removed, backups are retained for 30 days. When to choose Commerce for an online store
Commerce is aimed at sites operating a WooCommerce store. It includes Business features and store-focused capabilities for managing products, orders, payments, shipping, tax, marketing, and store operations. If you only need occasional payment collection, Premium or Business may provide enough; Commerce is the more direct fit when you need the integrated selling toolkit.

How to make the decision
- List the feature you need first. If basic hosted publishing is enough, start with Free. A custom domain or plugin installation points to Personal or higher; expanded promotion features point to Premium; backups or developer tools point to Business; store management points to Commerce.
- Check essential plugins. Plugin installation is available on paid plans, not Free, and a few plugins are restricted. Confirm compatibility before paying.
- Estimate media storage. WordPress.com currently lists 1 GB for Free, 6 GB for Personal, 13 GB for Premium, and 50 GB for Business or Commerce. If you have a legacy subscription, check its specific allowance.
- Decide whether you need recovery or development tools. Business and Commerce include the relevant advanced capabilities; review backup eligibility and restore conditions if recovery is a deciding factor.
- Separate payment collection from running a store. Compare lower-plan payment features and transaction fees if you do not need WooCommerce store management.
- Compare like with like on price. Check the live plans page using your country, currency, and preferred billing term. WordPress.com offers monthly and yearly billing, and prices vary by country.
WordPress.com plans are not WordPress.org hosting plans
This comparison is for WordPress.com, where hosting is included in the plans. WordPress.com describes Business as providing advanced customization without requiring you to manage hosting or server maintenance. If by “WordPress plan” you mean self-hosted WordPress.org, that is a different decision involving a hosting provider and responsibility for site maintenance; the five plans above are not a comparison of those hosting services.
