For smoother wireless PC VR, connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet and put the headset on a clear, strong 5 GHz network. Then check nearby Wi-Fi congestion, test channel width in stages, and change one setting at a time. Steam Link lists 5 GHz and Wi-Fi 5 as minimums, with Wi-Fi 6 or 6E recommended; newer Wi-Fi is not a substitute for a good signal and a wired PC.
Start with the PC-to-router connection
Keep the headset wireless, but connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet where possible. Valve’s Steam Link launch instructions say: “You’ll need a router with a wired connection to your PC, and a 5GHz WiFi network for your headset.” A wired PC avoids making its traffic compete with the headset on the same Wi-Fi radio.
Keep the PC and headset on the same local network. Steam’s Steam Link support page lists 5 GHz and Wi-Fi 5 as minimums and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. These are Steam Link requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee that every VR streaming app behaves identically.
Choose the headset’s Wi-Fi band
| Band | Potential benefit | Trade-off | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Longer range and better obstacle penetration | Typically more congestion and less throughput | Avoid for the streaming link when reliable 5 GHz is available |
| 5 GHz | Good throughput and generally less congestion than 2.4 GHz | Shorter range than 2.4 GHz; nearby networks can still interfere | Recommended starting point for a headset |
| 6 GHz / Wi-Fi 6E | Can offer a less congested connection close to the access point | Both router and headset must support Wi-Fi 6E; range through obstacles is shorter | Optional choice for a compatible headset used near the router |
Use 5 GHz as the starting band. It reaches less far than 2.4 GHz, so keep the access point reasonably close to the play area. Wi-Fi 6E’s 6 GHz band is an option only if both ends support it; it is not a universal fix for stutter. Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Link requirements recommend 6 GHz for that feature, but that recommendation is specific to Mixed Reality Link.

If a router combines bands under one network name and the headset keeps switching bands, give 5 GHz its own SSID and select it on the headset. Microsoft’s home Wi-Fi layout guidance explains using separate names to identify bands. NVIDIA likewise recommends distinct SSIDs in its CloudXR networking guidance; that is a CloudXR-specific recommendation.
Find a channel with less local congestion
There is no single best 5 GHz channel for every room. Use the router’s channel scan or a Wi-Fi analyzer to see what nearby networks occupy, then check the headset’s performance where you actually play. Steam suggests considering the upper portion of 5 GHz, starting at channel 149; Microsoft advises choosing a 5 GHz channel with few competing access points. NVIDIA names channels 44 or 149 for its documented CloudXR setup. These are context-dependent suggestions, not a universal ranking.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Channel availability and behavior depend on the router, firmware, local regulations, and client support. In particular, do not assume DFS channels are best or even available on every combination of router and headset.
Test channel width without sacrificing stability
| Width | What to expect | Practical test |
|---|---|---|
| 20 MHz | Narrower channel; Steam suggests stepping up from it if in use | Use as a baseline, especially if wider settings are unstable |
| 40 MHz | More potential capacity than 20 MHz, while still sharing spectrum with nearby networks | Steam’s first suggested width test when 20 MHz is in use |
| 80 MHz | Greater potential throughput, but more vulnerable to distance and RF noise | Try on capable equipment if 40 MHz is stable; step back if stutters or fluctuations appear |
Steam’s suggested network settings recommend trying 40 MHz in place of 20 MHz, then 80 MHz on 802.11ac-capable equipment. Wider does not automatically mean smoother: it can increase throughput potential while making the link more sensitive to interference and distance. Microsoft recommends 80 MHz for Mixed Reality Link, but that is application-specific guidance rather than a measured optimum for Steam Link, Air Link, or Virtual Desktop.

- If 40 MHz is stable and the equipment supports it, test 80 MHz.
- Keep the widest setting that is stable in your room; revert if performance worsens.
Improve signal before replacing the router
- Move the access point closer to the play area and place it centrally and higher when practical.
- Reduce walls and other obstacles between the headset and access point; avoid placing the router under a desk or in a corner.
- Check local channel congestion and compare changes in the room where you play.
- Change one setting at a time so you can identify which adjustment helped or hurt.
Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home layout guidance covers band range, signal, placement, channels, and channel width. A higher-specification router cannot compensate for a weak signal, poor placement, or a wireless PC connection that could be wired.

NVIDIA’s CloudXR networking guide advises disabling client isolation so clients can reach the server, and suggests prioritizing UDP with QoS if available. Those recommendations address CloudXR. Do not change isolation or QoS settings for another VR streaming app unless its guidance calls for it or you have a connectivity symptom that points to the setting.
