Choose Watch Dogs 2 if you want to play as Marcus Holloway and use connected-device hacks across the San Francisco Bay Area. Choose Watch Dogs: Legion if near-future London and recruiting people you meet—then switching between them—is the main draw. The original is the series’ first game, but the available official details here are not enough for a fair mechanics comparison, so check its current product listing and description before choosing it.

Should you play Watch Dogs 2 or Legion first?
There is no need to choose by release order if your decision is about the experience you want. Watch Dogs 2’s official description centers on Marcus and DedSec’s campaign against ctOS 2.0. Legion’s centers on assembling a resistance from people encountered in London and changing playable characters. Pick the premise that sounds more appealing; the descriptions do not establish that one is a required starting point for the other.

Pick Watch Dogs 2 for Marcus and device hacking
Ubisoft describes Marcus Holloway as a hacker living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its examples of hackable targets—drones, cars, cranes, and security robots—make this the clearer fit if the appeal is manipulating connected technology as part of an open-world game. Legion’s defining pitch is building a resistance from people you find in near-future London. Ubisoft says each recruit brings individual skills, resources, and talents, so the playable-character structure is the main distinction to weigh if you are deciding between the two. Pick the original only if you specifically want the first game
Ubisoft’s franchise page says the series dates to 2014 and identifies Legion as its third entry. However, the official information available here does not support a detailed comparison of the original’s story setting or mechanics. Do not assume those details from the later games; use the listing for the exact edition you are considering.
Check platform and edition before you buy
Ubisoft’s product pages list these platforms and editions; storefront availability and entitlements may differ by region, platform, and account. Confirm the specific store listing for your platform before purchase.

For Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft says its Ubisoft-store DLC is compatible only with base games purchased through Ubisoft.com or Ubisoft Connect. If you plan to add DLC, verify that the base game and add-on come from compatible storefronts. Ubisoft lists this caveat on the Watch Dogs 2 page.

Ubisoft’s Legion editions page displays several editions and lists Bloodline and Season Pass add-ons, but that alone does not establish what a particular current listing includes. Ubisoft’s historical editions announcement described the Season Pass as including story expansions, extra missions, playable heroes, and the Complete Edition of the original Watch Dogs. Treat that as an announcement about package contents, not proof that every copy or current listing includes those items. Understand the historical console upgrade announcement
At Legion’s 2020 launch, Ubisoft announced a no-additional-cost upgrade path from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S for purchasers on the corresponding last-generation console. What the player-count figure does—and does not—tell you
Ubisoft says the first Watch Dogs gathered more than 40 million players worldwide, but its franchise page gives no measurement date or methodology. - International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions.
Bottom line: buy for the premise, then verify the listing
For Marcus Holloway and connected-device hacking, Watch Dogs 2 is the most direct match. For recruiting and switching between Londoners with different abilities, choose Legion. If you want the first game, check its own product description rather than relying on comparisons the available official information cannot support. In every case, confirm platform compatibility and the contents of the exact edition you are about to buy.
