For a convincing tactical FPS, decide what kind of realism matters most: detailed environments, historically grounded combat, demanding teamwork, or close-quarters tactics. Seven games stand out from the available evidence, though they do not all fit the same definition—and one, Ready or Not, is a SWAT game rather than a war game. The evidence supports seven recommendations, not ten, so this guide does not pad the list with unverified titles.
What “realistic” means in these games
There is no single realism score here. Visual fidelity is different from believable ballistics, historical grounding, large-scale coordination, or the pressure of a close-quarters mission. The descriptions below identify what each developer or store listing emphasizes; they are not independent graphics tests or claims that a game reproduces real combat perfectly.
- Setting and presentation: Cold War terrain, modern jungle, Fallujah, contemporary SWAT operations, or World War II battlefields.
- Scale: Room clearing, squad missions, open-world exploration, or large multiplayer battles.
- Combat emphasis: Recoil and ballistics, sound and immersion, historical context, or communication and coordination.
- Play style and status: Solo, co-op, PvE, PvP, and whether a project is in Early Access can matter as much as its visual style.
Seven realistic-feeling tactical FPS games
1. Arma Reforger — an open-world Cold War sandbox
Arma Reforger centers on the fictional island of Everon. Bohemia Interactive describes the island as 52 km² and calls it the studio’s “most photorealistic and beautiful environment to date.” That is the developer’s promotional characterization, not an independent comparison. The game’s sandbox appeal also includes modding: Bohemia says every aspect can be modified using its Workbench tools. Its official site showed a development report dated September 22, 2026. 2. Six Days in Fallujah — urban combat with a historical focus
Six Days in Fallujah is built around the Battle of Fallujah. Its official site describes a tactical military shooter drawing on true stories of Marines, soldiers, and Iraqi civilians, and says dozens of Fallujans and other Iraqi civilians contributed insight. That source-based approach distinguishes its subject matter, but it does not by itself establish that the game is a complete or neutral account of the battle. Six Days in Fallujah official site
The Steam listing identifies it as Early Access and gave late 2026 as a target for full release. Release targets can change, so check the current listing before making a purchase decision. Six Days in Fallujah on Steam
3. Gray Zone Warfare — open-world extraction with PvE-first framing
Gray Zone Warfare is set on a Southeast Asian island. Its official site describes it as a PvE-first, open-world tactical extraction FPS. The Steam listing identifies the game as Early Access. Gray Zone Warfare official site
The official homepage announced Update 0.5 on October 4, 2026, describing it as a milestone that moved the project from pre-alpha to alpha and added a new gameplay loop. Those are the developer’s status descriptions; check the current official page for subsequent changes.

4. Insurgency: Sandstorm — focused modern team combat
Insurgency: Sandstorm offers a more focused modern-combat option than open-world sandboxes or 50-versus-50 battles. Focus Entertainment describes it as a team-based tactical FPS with four PvP modes and three PvE modes. Its publisher highlights sound design and immersive mechanics, and lists PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. Focus Entertainment’s Insurgency: Sandstorm page
Consider it if you want a choice between fighting other players and playing PvE, without making historical warfare or a huge open map the main draw.

Those counts are listing details and may change. The page also recommends a microphone, which is a practical consideration for a game built around teamwork. Squad on Steam

Its scale makes communication more central than in a room-clearing game. A microphone is an optional accessory for players who want to coordinate by voice, not a particular headset requirement.

Hell Let Loose puts the large-battle format in a World War II setting. Steam describes 50-versus-50 combat across 14 roles. The listing says its maps draw on aerial and satellite imagery of real battle locations, and cites true-to-life ballistics and recoil. It also describes proximity, command, and unit voice chat. These are store-page descriptions, not independent assessments of historical or ballistic accuracy. Hell Let Loose on Steam
Compared with Squad, the defining distinction in these listings is the historical setting: Hell Let Loose focuses on World War II, while Squad presents a range of factions and combined-arms battles.
7. Ready or Not — a close-quarters SWAT alternative
Ready or Not belongs in a tactical FPS shortlist, but it is not a war game. Steam describes modern SWAT operations, with single-player and co-op play for up to five players. Its listing also describes bullets passing through walls, furniture, and bodies. Ready or Not on Steam

How to choose without treating realism as a single score
- For an open-world sandbox: Start with Arma Reforger; look at Gray Zone Warfare if extraction and a PvE-first framing are more appealing.
- For large public battles: Compare Squad for combined-arms team play with Hell Let Loose for World War II combat.
- For smaller-team modern tactics: Insurgency: Sandstorm offers PvP and PvE modes; Ready or Not shifts the setting to SWAT operations.
- For a specific historical battle: Six Days in Fallujah is the most directly focused choice here, with the caveat that it was listed as Early Access and its release target may change.
Development status, platform availability, and release targets are time-sensitive. For projects listed as Early Access or undergoing development milestones, consult the linked official or Steam page for the latest information.
