There is no defensible five-brand ranking by smartwatch support years: manufacturers describe different kinds of updates, use different eligibility rules and, in several cases, publish no fixed support duration. The clearest published commitments are Google’s minimum three years of Pixel Watch updates, Samsung’s up-to-four-year OS-upgrade policy for eligible Galaxy Watches, and Zepp Health’s typical minimum two years of security updates for Amazfit and Zepp devices. Those figures are not directly comparable.
How to compare smartwatch software support
“Software support” can mean major operating-system upgrades, new features, bug fixes, security patches, or a combination. A commitment to security patches is not a promise of the same number of major OS upgrades. Nor does “up to” establish a minimum for every model. Compare the type of update, the stated duration, when the clock starts, and which models qualify.
- OS upgrades and features: changes that may add capabilities or move a watch to a newer platform version.
- Security updates: patches intended to address security issues; these can continue on a different schedule from OS upgrades.
- Eligibility and timing: the promise may be limited to certain models or launch cohorts, and the support period may begin at first sale or shipment rather than your purchase date.
What the major smartwatch brands publicly commit to

Which smartwatch gets the longest software support?
The available official statements do not establish one longest-support brand across the market. Google’s minimum three years is explicit and includes several update types, while Samsung’s figure is an “up to” OS-upgrade commitment for eligible models. Zepp Health’s typical two-year minimum is for security updates, which is a narrower measure. Huawei, Garmin and Apple do not provide a comparable fixed duration in the cited official material.

That means a simple ranking would imply comparable guarantees where none exist. A buyer should instead compare the exact watch model’s terms, separating OS upgrades from security patches and checking the model’s launch date and eligibility.

How to check support for a specific watch before buying
- Identify the exact model and generation. A brand-level policy may apply only to named watches or eligible launch cohorts.
- Open the manufacturer’s current policy or support page. Check any eligible-device, end-of-life or security-bulletin list, not only a general announcement.
- Read what “updates” covers. Confirm whether the stated period includes OS upgrades, features, bug fixes, security patches, or only some of these.
- Check the start date and market. Google starts its Pixel Watch period at first US Google Store availability; Zepp Health describes its typical security period from first shipment. Samsung notes model eligibility and market variation for security updates.
- Verify the policy for the country and sales channel where you will use the watch. Availability and eligibility can vary by model or market; do not assume a global brand statement guarantees identical treatment everywhere.
What the published commitments do—and do not—tell you
A longer stated period can help a watch remain patched or gain software changes for longer, but years alone do not tell you how often updates arrive or which features a particular model receives. Manufacturer wording also differs: a minimum, a typical period and an “up to” term carry different levels of certainty. Treat a policy as a model-specific buying factor, not a brand-wide promise unless the manufacturer says it applies universally.
