On a new Android phone, start with screen timeout and brightness, confirm Adaptive Battery is enabled, and check battery use before limiting any app. For privacy, review app permissions and recent access in the Privacy dashboard. Use Battery Saver and device-wide camera or microphone blocking only when you accept the features they may interrupt. Menu names and availability vary by Android version and manufacturer.
1. Make the everyday battery changes first
Display settings are a practical first step because they affect routine phone use without requiring you to disable app features. The amount saved depends on your screen and how you use the phone; Google does not give a universal battery-life gain for these changes.
Shorten screen timeout and adjust brightness
In Settings, look for Display to shorten how long the screen stays on when idle. Lower brightness or enable adaptive brightness if you want the phone to adjust it automatically. Google also lists dark theme and turning off keyboard sounds or vibration as possible battery-saving choices, though their usefulness depends on your device and habits. Check Adaptive Battery and app optimization
Google includes Adaptive Battery among its battery-saving settings. On Pixel phones covered by Google’s guidance, Adaptive Battery and battery optimization are on by default, and Google recommends leaving them enabled. A newly set up or reset Pixel may take a few weeks to fully optimize, so its early battery behavior may not represent longer-term use. Use battery-use information before restricting an app
Open Settings and search for Battery or battery usage; the exact path varies. Review which apps are using the most battery, then consider restricting an app only if its background activity is not important to you. Broad restrictions can interfere with timely activity such as messages, navigation, wearable connections, or backups. Avoid force-stopping or restricting every app as a default battery strategy.
3. Review app permissions one app or category at a time
Use the app’s info page in Settings or open Permission Manager to see and change access. Depending on Android version and device, permission categories can include location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos and videos, notifications, nearby devices, and physical activity. For location, camera, and microphone, available choices can include allowing access all the time for location, allowing only while using the app, asking every time, or not allowing access. Choose the narrowest option that still supports the app’s purpose. For example, a map app may need location while in use, while an app that has no clear reason to access contacts may not need that permission.

4. Use the Privacy dashboard to review recent access
Search Settings for Privacy dashboard. It can show which apps recently accessed permissions, helping you decide whether an app’s access makes sense and whether you want to change it. Google documents a seven-day view on Android 13 and a 24-hour view on Android 12; the available controls and labels can differ by version. See Google’s Privacy dashboard instructions.
A listed access is a reason to investigate, not proof of misuse. Check the app’s purpose and permission settings before changing access.

5. Know how camera and microphone controls work
On supported Android 12-and-newer devices, a green indicator appears when an app is using the camera or microphone. Tap the indicator to identify the app or service. Quick Settings may also include device-wide camera and microphone access controls. Google’s steps are at Check if your Android camera or microphone is on or off.
Global blocking is useful when you want to shut off access temporarily, but it can prevent camera- or microphone-dependent features from working. Restore access if a feature you want stops working; the controls may not be available in the same way on every device.

6. Treat Battery Saver as a situational control
Google says Battery Saver turns on Dark theme and limits or turns off background activity. Visual effects, features, network connections, and apps may be delayed. Use it when extending the remaining charge matters more than immediate background activity; for routine daily use, start with display adjustments and selective app review instead. Exact scheduling and behavior depend on the phone, so consult the manufacturer’s instructions if you want to automate it. Google’s overview is Get the most life from your Android device’s battery.
7. Decide separately about ad privacy and diagnostics
Ad privacy settings
Android’s ad privacy section lets you manage ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement. These preferences do not guarantee that ads will disappear: ads may still be influenced by other settings and by individual apps’ policies. Review Google’s ad privacy settings guidance if you want to adjust these options.
Usage and diagnostics
Usage and diagnostics is a separate Google setting. Google says it may share information about usage, connectivity, and battery-related details to improve products. Turning it off does not affect essential system updates or information that apps collect. Decide based on your sharing preferences; it is not a universal control over data collected by third-party apps. See Google Account Help’s usage and diagnostics information.
Why your phone’s menus may not match these directions
Android settings vary by version and manufacturer, and some battery actions require device-maker instructions. If a path or label does not match, search Settings for terms such as “Battery,” “Adaptive Battery,” “Privacy dashboard,” or “Permission Manager.” Google’s overview of the variation is in Learn about Android security and privacy settings.
