Choose Dokku for a straightforward, CLI-first, single-server workflow; CapRover for a web interface around Docker; and Coolify for a dashboard that coordinates Docker resources across servers you connect. Ownkube is different: its vendor describes a commercial, operated service, available as hosted compute or in a customer AWS account. It is an operations alternative, not a like-for-like self-hosted package.

With Coolify, Dokku, or CapRover, providing the platform does not mean someone else runs your infrastructure. You still need an owner for server upkeep, security, data protection, and recovery. The right choice depends on who will do that work and how you want to deploy.

How the four options differ

The practical dividing lines are deployment workflow, infrastructure responsibility, and how much of the platform someone else operates. This comparison reflects the products’ documentation and vendor descriptions available in 2026; it is not a hands-on test or performance ranking.

Product Deployment and operating model Infrastructure and operator
Coolify Dashboard for deploying from a Git repository, Dockerfile, Docker Compose file, or prebuilt Docker image. Coordinates Docker resources on connected servers. You provide and operate the servers and, if self-hosting, the Coolify control plane. Its documentation says workloads keep running if the control plane is unavailable, but dashboard control and automation pause.
Dokku CLI-oriented deployment: push code with Git; Dokku builds from a Dockerfile or buildpack and manages web, background, and scheduled processes. Designed to run on a server you provide and operate. Dokku’s documentation describes it as a single-server PaaS.
CapRover Docker-based platform with a web interface and CLI deployment path. You provide and operate the server. Its standard installation documentation requires a public IP and describes a Docker-based setup.
Ownkube Its vendor describes deploying from a repository or container image, with product features including managed Postgres, workers, TLS, logs, metrics, autoscaling, and rollbacks. Commercial, vendor-operated offering described as hosted compute or an option in a customer AWS account. These product and operations statements are vendor claims, not independently verified results.

Coolify’s official documentation calls it “the control plane for your infrastructure.” Dokku’s getting-started documentation describes an open-source PaaS that runs on a single server. Those descriptions capture a meaningful distinction: Coolify coordinates resources on connected Docker servers, while Dokku’s documented model centers on one server. Connecting multiple servers to Coolify does not, by itself, establish cluster scheduling or high availability.

Which deployment workflow fits your team?

Choose Dokku if Git push is the interface you want

Dokku’s core path is familiar to developers comfortable with Git and a command line: push a commit, build it using a Dockerfile or buildpack, and let Dokku run and route the resulting processes. Its documentation also covers background processes and scheduled tasks. This can be a direct fit for a small team that prefers a compact, server-centered workflow over managing deployments through a dashboard.

The trade-off is that Dokku’s documented product model is single-server. Its documentation lists additional scheduler integrations, but their presence alone is not a reason to assume a particular production scaling or availability design; confirm support and behavior for the scheduler you intend to use.

Choose CapRover if you want a web-facing Docker workflow

CapRover combines a web interface with a CLI deployment path. The getting-started documentation’s example CLI flow sends the current Git commit; uncommitted and ignored files are excluded. That detail matters if you expect local working-tree changes to be included in a deployment.

Its standard setup has more explicit network prerequisites than a simple private development box: the documentation requires a public IP, and its normal domain configuration uses wildcard DNS. Without a domain, the documentation says HTTPS is unavailable. Local use behind NAT needs additional setup for external access or HTTPS.

Choose Coolify if you want a dashboard across connected Docker hosts

Coolify accepts several deployment inputs—Git repositories, Dockerfiles, Docker Compose files, and prebuilt images—and coordinates builds, deployments, domains, HTTPS, and health checks on connected servers. The workloads remain Docker resources on infrastructure you control. Its dashboard does not turn those servers into a managed hosting service.

There is a useful control-plane failure distinction: Coolify’s documentation says existing resources continue running if the control plane becomes unavailable, while its dashboard control and automation are interrupted until it returns. Plan how you will deploy, diagnose, or recover during that interval rather than treating dashboard availability as equivalent to application availability.

Consider Ownkube if you want an operated service

Ownkube’s product page and May 8, 2026 comparison describe a commercial service with a hosted path and an option to run in a customer AWS account. The vendor says it operates the hosted compute and can operate the platform in that AWS-account path. Its comparison also presents feature and team-size recommendations; treat those as the vendor’s own framing, not an independent ranking. Confirm current cloud availability, plan terms, support boundaries, and what remains your responsibility before choosing it.

What the documented server requirements do—and do not—tell you

Minimum memory figures are installation or scheduler requirements, not a sizing prescription for a production workload. Builds can create temporary peaks, and databases, workers, concurrent deployments, storage, and backups add demands beyond the platform itself.

Product Requirements stated in the reviewed documentation Practical interpretation
Coolify The opened Coolify documentation describes connecting Docker servers but gives no universal minimum RAM figure. Size each connected server for the applications and services you will run; do not infer a memory minimum from the control-plane description.
Dokku Dokku documentation accessed October 7, 2026 lists 1 GB system memory for its Docker scheduler, or 2 GB on every node for its K3s scheduler. It lists Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, or 26.04, or Debian 11 or later, on x64, and AMD64 and ARM64 architectures. These are documented baseline requirements, not evidence that a server at the minimum can build and run a particular application comfortably.
CapRover Its getting-started documentation lists AMD64 and ARM64 images, says its tested stack is Ubuntu 24.04 and Docker 25 or later, recommends 1 GB RAM as a practical minimum, and warns that 512 MB may be insufficient during image builds. Builds can be the limiting case even when the deployed app itself is small. Allow capacity for build peaks and the workload.
Ownkube The vendor describes hosted compute and a customer-AWS-account option; no universal memory requirement is established in the reviewed material. Check current plan and cloud requirements with the vendor for your deployment path.

Dokku’s installation instructions displayed v0.38.31 as the latest stable version shown when accessed October 7, 2026. That is a dated page detail, not a guarantee that it remains the latest version; check the current installation documentation before installing.

Domains, TLS, and internet exposure

Domain and HTTPS setup affect both convenience and security. Coolify coordinates domains and HTTPS, but you remain responsible for DNS and the surrounding network and infrastructure. Dokku recommends a domain and documents DNS and domain configuration, but says a domain is not mandatory. CapRover’s normal domain setup uses wildcard DNS; its setup documentation says HTTPS is not available without a domain.

For CapRover, the documented standard setup requires a public-IP host. The example install command exposes ports 80, 443, and 3000; review what each port exposes in your intended network design and apply appropriate firewall rules. A public IP and open ports are not substitutes for checking access controls and TLS configuration.

Ownkube says it provides a Cloudflare subdomain and manages TLS. Those are vendor-described features; verify how domains, certificates, and account access work for the current plan and deployment path.

Who handles updates, backups, and security?

For self-hosted Coolify, Dokku, and CapRover, a person or team must own the underlying server and workload operations. “Self-hosted” identifies where software runs; it does not mean the server is maintained, secured, or backed up for you.

  • Coolify: its documentation assigns the user responsibility for selecting and paying for servers, OS updates, SSH access, firewall rules, DNS, application and database data, backup and restore strategy, and workload security. If you self-host the control plane, you also operate its updates, backups, and recovery.
  • Dokku and CapRover: you provide and operate the host. Establish who patches the operating system and platform, manages access and networking, protects application data, and responds to failed deployments or server incidents.
  • Ownkube: the vendor describes its service as operated, but that does not establish every support boundary or responsibility for customer data and AWS-account configuration. Confirm those terms directly.

Before putting important services on any option, validate the security model, monitoring, upgrade and rollback procedures, and failure behavior. Most importantly, perform a restore from backup; having a backup job is not proof that recovery works.

Compare total operating cost, not just software price

A free or open-source license does not eliminate the cost of running a platform. For Coolify, Dokku, or CapRover, include the infrastructure you supply and the time required to keep it healthy. For Ownkube, examine current plan terms and the service responsibilities included in the price. Ownkube’s price and cost comparisons are its own commercial estimates, not independent market research, and prices can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compute for the platform, application builds, databases, workers, and peak concurrency.
  • Storage, backup retention, and a separate destination for recovery copies.
  • Network transfer, domains and DNS, monitoring, and any managed database or other services you choose.
  • Operator time for patching, access reviews, incident response, restores, and testing upgrades or rollbacks.
  • For an operated service, the cost and limits of support, data access, and account or cloud responsibilities.

Estimate cost against a real workload and recovery target. A small server may look inexpensive until build peaks, database storage, backup retention, or the time required to operate it are included.

A practical decision checklist

  • Pick Dokku first if you want Git-push deployment, a CLI-centered workflow, and a single-server model.
  • Pick CapRover first if a web-facing Docker workflow suits you and you can meet the public-IP, DNS, and host requirements.
  • Pick Coolify first if you want a dashboard to coordinate Docker workloads across servers you supply and operate.
  • Evaluate Ownkube if an operated commercial service or its vendor-described AWS-account path better matches your operations model, and verify the current terms with the vendor.

Whichever route you choose, test a deployment and recovery path with your own application before relying on it. A quick install or product label does not establish production suitability.
