Some security subscriptions overlap with protections or services you already have—but none of the four below is automatically a waste. Windows users can check whether they need a separate antivirus; password-manager subscribers can compare their actual needs with passkeys and free sign-in tools; U.S. readers can review free credit protections and any identity monitoring in an existing plan. A VPN is a separate decision: Microsoft retired the VPN feature in its Defender product, but that does not mean other VPN subscriptions are unnecessary.
1. Separate antivirus on a Windows PC
If you pay for antivirus on a Windows PC, first check whether it duplicates protection already included with Windows. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus comes installed and turned on. Windows 11 also includes cloud-delivered protection and SmartScreen, alongside automatic updates and real-time, behavior-based and heuristic protection. Microsoft Support describes the included protections, and Microsoft Learn documents Defender Antivirus and Windows security behavior.
Windows turns Defender Antivirus off when another antivirus application is installed and turned on; it turns back on if that application is uninstalled. That behavior can make it less obvious which antivirus is active. Check Windows Security before changing a subscription, and confirm which provider is listed as protecting the device. This is a duplication check, not a universal recommendation to cancel. A paid product may include features, device coverage, or support that matter to you. Also confirm coverage for every device you use: Windows’ built-in protection is not proof that your other computers or phones have equivalent coverage.

2. Password-manager subscriptions
Before renewing a password manager, list the features you actually rely on. Microsoft offers passwordless sign-in options including Windows Hello and passkeys, and says Microsoft Authenticator is a free mobile app. These can help with sign-in, but the available information does not establish that they replace all the capabilities of a paid password manager. Microsoft’s Windows security guidance explains these options.
Keep paying if the features matter
Check whether you depend on password sharing, recovery tools, access across different operating systems or devices, or other features in your current plan. Compare those needs with what your devices and the free options support. Do not cancel first and discover afterward that a feature your household depends on is missing.

Make sign-in safer either way
Where a service supports passkeys, consider whether that sign-in method fits your devices and recovery arrangements. Keep a secure route back into important accounts if a device is lost or replaced. Microsoft Support says, “Writing them down is ok, as long as it’s on a well-protected piece of paper away from your computer.” That is limited advice about protecting written credentials, not a recommendation that a paper list replace a password manager.

For U.S. residents, compare a paid identity-monitoring subscription with protections available at no charge and benefits you may already receive through another plan. Microsoft recommends getting a free credit report every year from each bureau through AnnualCreditReport.com. If you are not seeking credit, Microsoft also recommends considering freezes with all three credit bureaus. A freeze can help prevent new credit accounts from being opened in your name, but it is not the same as monitoring or recovery support. Some eligible U.S. subscribers to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family may already have access to Microsoft Defender identity monitoring through its Experian partnership. Microsoft describes dark-web monitoring, credit monitoring, restoration support, and identity-theft insurance as included elements, subject to eligibility, language, age, and policy limits. Check your plan and its terms rather than assuming you are covered—or that the benefit matches a separate service you pay for. Microsoft Support provides the feature and policy qualifications.
Compare the service, not just the alerts
Monitoring alerts, credit monitoring, restoration assistance, and insurance are different benefits. Before canceling, check which are included, what limits and conditions apply, and whether you would lose help responding to an incident. The free report and freeze options do not provide the same services as identity monitoring.

4. VPN subscriptions
Do not cancel a VPN merely because you read that Microsoft Defender included one. Microsoft’s privacy-protection VPN feature ended on February 28, 2025, so it is not a current Defender benefit to count when comparing subscriptions. Microsoft Support announced the end of support for that feature.
That retirement says nothing about whether a different VPN is worth keeping. Decide based on why you use yours, which devices it covers, and whether your other services meet that need. If you cannot identify a use for it, review the plan and its renewal terms before canceling; if you rely on it for a specific purpose, the discontinued Defender feature is not a substitute.

Before you cancel, check what you would lose
- Overlap: Is the same protection already active on the device or included in another plan?
- Coverage: Does the replacement support all your operating systems, devices, and household members?
- Features: Which sharing, recovery, monitoring, support, or other features do you actually use?
- Eligibility and location: Are the alternative and its benefits available to you? The credit-report and freeze guidance here is for U.S. readers.
- Terms: For identity monitoring, review limits and conditions for restoration assistance and insurance, not just the alert list.
