On many Samsung Galaxy phones, the call earpiece is at the top front and the external speaker is along the bottom edge. Some models also use an upper speaker for stereo sound. The exact layout varies, so use your phone’s model-specific manual to identify its openings.
Which speaker opening are you looking for?
Samsung describes the earpiece as being at the top front of the phone and the external speaker as being at the bottom. The earpiece is used for ordinary calls held to your ear; the bottom speaker provides loudspeaker output for media and other sounds. On some Galaxy models, an upper speaker works with the bottom speaker for stereo audio.
These are common roles, not a universal layout. Samsung says microphone and speaker positions may vary by device. Also, an upper speaker can look like a narrow earpiece slit rather than a conspicuous grille. Do not assume every small opening is a speaker: microphones, vents, the USB port, and speaker openings may be near one another.

How to identify the speaker on your exact model
- Find the model number. Check the phone’s settings or its packaging so you can distinguish it from other Galaxy models.
- Open the manual for that model. Use its device layout diagram to identify the speaker, microphone, and ports rather than relying on a generic Galaxy illustration.
- Match the opening to the sound you are testing. For a call held to your ear, listen at the top-front earpiece. For media or loudspeaker output, check the external speaker, commonly on the bottom edge. A stereo model may use both upper and lower speakers.
Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series manual is one example of a model-family layout diagram; it should not be treated as a map for other phones. Samsung’s support guidance likewise notes that placement can vary by device.

Why the top speaker may seem quiet or silent
A quiet upper speaker in one situation does not establish that it is broken. Samsung describes different behavior on select Galaxy phones with AKG stereo speakers:
- Ringtones and alarms may use both speakers only when the phone detects that it is lying on a flat surface.
- Short system sounds or notifications may end before the upper speaker’s volume has increased.
- During a speakerphone call, covering the proximity sensor near the top of the screen can cause the upper speaker to be disabled, leaving the lower speaker active for hearing protection.
These examples are model- and situation-dependent, not a promise that every Galaxy phone behaves the same way. When checking sound, note whether you are playing media, receiving a notification, hearing a ringtone, using speakerphone, or holding the phone to your ear. What to check if sound is actually a problem
- Remove a case, film, skin, or accessory that may cover an opening or redirect sound. A screen protector that does not fit the phone can block the top receiver.
- Turn Bluetooth off to rule out audio being sent to a connected device, then play audio and raise the volume.
- Restart the phone and test the sound again in the situation where you noticed the issue.
- If the phone is wet, pat the earpiece, bottom microphone, external speaker, and USB port dry with a clean, soft cloth. Samsung advises rinsing salt water with fresh water and drying the phone thoroughly.
Some models also have air vents at the top or bottom. Samsung’s call troubleshooting guidance uses the Galaxy S26 Ultra as an example and warns that a case or film covering vents may affect sound; a vent should not be mistaken for a speaker.
