Start with your Galaxy’s battery-usage view, then change only the settings tied to what you find. Shortening screen timeouts and limiting background activity can reduce some battery use, while reviewing app permissions helps control access to your location, camera, and microphone. The exact menu names and available options vary by model and software version.
1. Find what is using your battery
Battery drain depends on settings, environment, and how you use the phone. Bright screens, long screen-on time, demanding apps, high-resolution streaming, enabled services, and weak or fluctuating mobile signal can all contribute. A new Galaxy may also use more power than usual during its first few days as setup and optimization finish. Samsung’s battery-drain troubleshooting guidance was updated on 28 April 2026.
- Open Settings and look for Battery, Battery and device care, or Device care.
- Open the battery graph or usage details and check which apps and features account for the most use.
- Choose a targeted adjustment for an unusually active app or feature instead of restricting everything at once.
Samsung notes that menu names and paths can vary by device, software, and app version. If these labels do not match your phone, search Settings for “Battery” or use the nearest equivalent shown on your model. See Samsung’s Galaxy battery optimization guide.

2. Reduce screen use without making the phone hard to see
The display is a practical place to start if the battery view points to substantial screen use. A shorter timeout prevents the screen from staying on after you put the phone down; a comfortable lower brightness reduces the power needed to light it.

- In Settings, search for Screen timeout and choose a shorter interval that still suits how you use the phone.
- Lower brightness to a usable level, or enable Adaptive Brightness if available to let the phone adjust to ambient light.
- A dark-tone wallpaper or theme may be worth trying on displays where darker content uses less power.
The impact depends on the Galaxy model, display, and your habits; these adjustments do not guarantee a particular increase in runtime.
3. Restrict background activity selectively
Samsung’s Background usage limits can help curb activity from apps you rarely use. Sleeping and deep sleeping are not the same: sleeping apps may run intermittently, and their notifications or updates may be delayed; deep sleeping apps do not run in the background and work only when opened.

- In Settings, open the Battery area and look for Background usage limits.
- Add an app to Sleeping apps if occasional background activity is acceptable, or Deep sleeping apps if it does not need to work until you open it.
- Keep apps that need timely alerts, current information, or background location out of those lists. If available, Never auto sleeping apps can exempt selected apps, though their background activity may use more battery.
Samsung describes its app-management system as using patterns such as inactivity and background battery consumption to apply sleep modes. Its developer documentation also discusses Android 14 foreground-service policy changes beginning with One UI 6, so older descriptions of app behavior may not apply uniformly to every current app and phone. 4. Use Power saving when its trade-offs suit you
Power saving can restrict background apps’ access to Wi-Fi and mobile data and disable or limit high-consumption features such as Always On Display. Depending on the device and selected options, it may also adjust CPU speed and brightness or limit location services.

Open the Battery settings and review the options shown for Power saving on your phone before enabling it. Consider whether you rely on background sync, prompt alerts, or location features: the restrictions that extend runtime can also delay or limit those functions. Samsung’s battery optimization guidance describes these trade-offs.
5. Review which apps can access your location, camera, and microphone
For privacy, check permissions app by app rather than turning off every permission. Open Settings, find Privacy or Security and privacy, then open Permission manager. Review Location, Camera, and Microphone, and choose the least access that still lets each app do its job.

- Where offered, Allow only while using the app avoids continuous access when the app is not in use.
- Ask every time gives you a decision when an app requests access, where that option is available.
- For location, consider approximate access when an app does not need your exact position. Navigation or ride-share features may need more precision than a general local recommendation.
Samsung’s One UI 5 privacy dashboard explanation describes reviewing location use over the previous 24 hours, choosing app-specific sharing options, and disabling precise location to allow approximate location. 6. Identify camera or microphone access when it happens
Galaxy phones show a green dot when an app is using the camera or microphone. On the Samsung support path, open the notification panel and tap the dot to see which app is accessing the sensor. If the access is unexpected, close the app and review its permission in Permission manager. The indicator helps you investigate active sensor use; it is not a complete audit of an app’s data practices.

7. Treat other security and data-sharing controls as optional reviews
The Security and privacy menu may also include Auto Blocker, app security checks, security updates, diagnostic-data choices, and certain personalization or ad controls. Review these according to your needs, but do not treat disabling every service as necessary for good privacy or as a guaranteed battery improvement. Availability and labels vary by device.
