For more reliable Wi-Fi, first find out whether the problem is the wireless connection or the internet service reaching your router. Keep settings such as channel and channel width on Auto unless you have a reason to test a change; then alter one setting at a time and compare the same devices in the same problem location. Placement and obstacles can matter as much as router settings.
First identify what is failing
A dropped Wi-Fi connection, a weak signal in one room, slow wireless speeds, and a complete loss of internet access are different problems. A router setting is most likely to help when wireless devices are affected but a wired device stays connected. TP-Link’s wireless-disconnection guidance addresses that kind of situation; if wired devices are also unstable, changing radio settings may not solve it.
When both wired and wireless devices are slow, TP-Link recommends connecting a computer directly to the modem to help distinguish a router or Wi-Fi problem from a modem or ISP issue. For a more controlled Wi-Fi speed comparison, test about 6–9 feet from the router with no walls, furniture, or other barriers in between, as described in its slow-internet troubleshooting guide.
Fix placement and interference before tuning channels
Put the router in a relatively open location and test coverage where the trouble occurs. Walls, ceilings, distance, nearby Wi-Fi networks, and household radio sources such as microwaves or cordless devices can all contribute to weak or unstable wireless performance. TP-Link’s signal-and-range guidance and disconnection guide both emphasize location and interference.

Moving the router cannot fix an ISP fault, but it is a useful first test because it does not require changing network settings. Note where the router is and where the affected device is; retest from the same location after moving it. Physical barriers matter especially for 5 GHz, which TP-Link describes as shorter-range and more sensitive to obstacles than 2.4 GHz.
Keep channel selection on Auto unless congestion is plausible
A Wi-Fi channel is part of the radio spectrum a router uses. Nearby networks on overlapping channels can interfere, so trying a less congested channel may help when instability is concentrated in a busy wireless environment. But changing channels without evidence of congestion is unlikely to be a useful first move. TP-Link says a channel change is unnecessary unless nearby access points are causing interference in its wireless-settings instructions.

On 2.4 GHz, TP-Link says channels 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap at 20 MHz in the United States. That is not a universal channel prescription: supported channels depend on local regulations and router model. ASUS likewise cautions that available channels vary by country in its Wi-Fi disconnection troubleshooting guidance. If you do test a channel, use the options shown by your router and follow its model-specific instructions.
Use channel width as a targeted stability test
Channel width is a trade-off, not a reliability switch. Wider channels can carry more data at once, but they use more spectrum and can be more susceptible to interference. TP-Link explains this trade-off in its wireless channel and channel-width overview. ASUS says automatic bandwidth is the default on its routers and notes that channel bandwidth affects speed and signal stability in its troubleshooting guidance.

If you have intermittent disconnections, TP-Link suggests testing 20 MHz channel width on 2.4 or 5 GHz in the same disconnection guide. Treat that as a symptom-specific test, not a setting that is best for every network. A narrower width may help in a congested environment but can reduce potential throughput. Record the original setting, change only the affected band’s width, then see whether the same devices stay connected in the same location.
Choose bands and Smart Connect based on the device and room
Band choice depends on distance, obstructions, and what the client device supports. ASUS’s band-selection guidance says nearby compatible devices may benefit from 5 GHz, while farther rooms or legacy devices may be better served by 2.4 GHz. The 6 GHz band can be weak at distance or across multiple walls. A band label alone does not guarantee better performance at a particular spot.

Some routers combine bands under one network name and use band steering to direct devices. TP-Link calls this Smart Connect: it shares 2.4 and 5 GHz credentials and handles band selection automatically, according to its wireless-settings instructions. If only one device has connection trouble, temporarily disabling Smart Connect can help test whether that client is having a compatibility problem. Restore the original setting if the test makes no difference; do not disable it as a general reliability rule.

Use WPA2-AES or WPA3 where supported, and set a distinct strong password for router administration rather than reusing the Wi-Fi password. TP-Link recommends WPA2-PSK[AES] or WPA3-Personal+WPA2-PSK[AES] where available in its wireless-security guidance; ASUS also recommends WPA2-AES or WPA3 in its troubleshooting advice.

Check the router manufacturer’s instructions for firmware updates for your exact hardware model. Menus, supported widths, security options, and behavior differ by model and firmware, so do not assume another router’s UI path applies to yours. Vendor support articles from TP-Link and ASUS provide model-specific instructions.
Quick Recap
Change one thing at a time, then follow the evidence
- Define the symptom. Note whether the issue is a wireless drop, weak coverage in a particular room, slow throughput, or loss of all internet access.
- Compare wired and wireless devices. If only Wi-Fi is affected, investigate placement, obstacles, interference, channel, width, or band steering. If wired devices are affected too, test the modem connection and contact the ISP or equipment provider as appropriate.
- Try the least disruptive change first. Relocate the router or, where nearby-network congestion is plausible, test a different supported channel. Keep Auto when there is no evidence that channel selection is the problem.
- Test one radio setting at a time. Record the original value before changing channel width or Smart Connect. Retest the same device in the same location so the result is comparable.
- Undo changes that do not help. If a setting change does not improve the specific symptom, restore it rather than layering on more changes.
- Escalate the right problem. Persistent trouble on one device points toward client compatibility or band selection; persistent trouble across wired and wireless devices points away from Wi-Fi settings alone.
