Start by updating your router’s firmware, keeping channel bandwidth on its automatic or default setting, and checking for channel congestion before making targeted changes. Then test the affected device at the place where Wi-Fi is weak. The best settings depend on your router, firmware, country, nearby networks, and client devices; no single change guarantees better coverage in every home.

Start with low-risk changes

Update firmware and change one setting at a time

Outdated firmware can be part of a disconnection problem. Follow the instructions for your router model to check for and install an update; ASUS notes that its steps vary by model and firmware in its wireless disconnection troubleshooting guide. Before changing settings, note their current values. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell whether a setting helped or made the connection worse.

Keep bandwidth on automatic as a baseline

Channel bandwidth affects wireless speed and stability, as ASUS explains in its wireless channel and bandwidth guidance. Wider channels can provide higher transmission speeds when the router and client support them, but they are not automatically more stable, especially where nearby networks create interference. Begin with the router’s automatic or default bandwidth setting, then compare a wider supported option only if you have a specific reason to test it.

Check interference before choosing a channel

When nearby wireless devices use the same channel, interference may slow speeds. ASUS describes automatic channel selection as the default in its guidance; if you suspect congestion, compare it with a less-used channel that your router supports. Channel choices vary by band, country, router, and firmware, and some options may appear only in the router’s web interface.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Change the channel only after recording the original setting. Test the affected device in the same location and under similar conditions, comparing connection reliability and speed. A manual channel is not inherently better than automatic selection: congestion changes, and the least-used supported choice depends on your surroundings.

Choose a band for the device’s location

Band choice is a trade-off between reach, interference, and potential speed. ASUS’s comparison of 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz describes general tendencies, not a guarantee for every home:

Band Typical trade-off When to test it
2.4 GHz Broader coverage, but narrower usable channels, lower speeds, and more interference. When a device is farther away or needs to connect through more challenging distances.
5 GHz Generally faster than 2.4 GHz at middle distances, with less reach through obstacles than 2.4 GHz. When the device has adequate signal and you want to compare speed and reliability.
6 GHz Cleaner spectrum and high bandwidth, but the weakest wall penetration of these bands. When both router and client support it and the device is close enough for a useful signal.

Actual results also depend on signal strength, interference, channel width, and the client’s specifications. Local rules affect which channels and power limits are available. Test at the actual weak spot rather than assuming that a higher-frequency band will perform better through walls or at a distance.

Separate band names when diagnosing Smart Connect

Smart Connect can steer devices among bands under one Wi-Fi name. If one device repeatedly disconnects, temporarily disabling Smart Connect and assigning separate names to the bands can help establish whether that device behaves more reliably on a particular band. ASUS includes disabling Smart Connect in its disconnection troubleshooting guidance. Compare connection behavior before deciding whether to keep separate names; band separation is a diagnostic option, not a universal improvement.

Understand DFS before using additional 5 GHz channels

Some routers support Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) channels on 5 GHz, subject to local rules. These channels provide additional choices, but can have availability checks and interruption consequences. ASUS says its Channel Availability Check takes 1–10 minutes depending on the country; if radar is detected while the router is operating, it may change channels and clients may briefly disconnect. If you notice a startup delay or short interruptions, DFS behavior may be relevant. Whether DFS is a good fit depends on your region, router, and tolerance for those delays or changes.

Adjust placement and antenna direction

Settings cannot fully compensate for a router that is too far from the client or poorly positioned. ASUS recommends reducing the distance between router and device and trying external antenna angles as described in the router’s manual. There is no universal antenna angle or placement formula that guarantees a particular coverage gain, so make one adjustment at a time and retest the weak location.

Use WPA3 for security, not range

WPA3 does not extend Wi-Fi coverage. If both the router and client devices support it, ASUS lists WPA3-Personal and a WPA2/WPA3 mode on supported products. After changing encryption, devices may need to reconnect. ASUS also states that WPA3 does not support WPS; consult the router’s documentation for the available security modes and device compatibility.

Compare changes fairly

For a useful comparison, keep the test location and device the same, record the original setting, and change one item at a time. Compare the router’s automatic channel with a manually tested, less-congested supported channel; automatic bandwidth with a wider supported width; and, where available, band steering with separate band names. Judge the result against the actual goal—fewer disconnects, better reach, or higher throughput—rather than treating one speed reading as proof that coverage improved.

If you prefer to access the router settings over a wired connection while testing, the setup page may be available through Ethernet or Wi-Fi, according to ASUS’s router setup-page access instructions. A cable is only a way to connect to the router while configuring it; it does not boost Wi-Fi coverage.
