Choose WPA3 Personal if your router and the devices you rely on support it. If an older WPA2-only device needs access, try WPA2/WPA3 Transitional. If that device still cannot connect, use WPA2 Personal (AES) as a fallback or isolate it on a separate network. Avoid WEP, old WPA, TKIP, and open Wi-Fi.
What each router security setting means
The labels describe how devices authenticate to your Wi-Fi network and protect the wireless connection. Router menus differ by product and firmware, so check the router’s documentation if the available choices are unclear.
WPA3 Personal
WPA3 Personal is the preferred choice when your router and the devices that need network access support it. Apple describes WPA3 as the newest, most secure Wi-Fi protocol currently available and recommends it for better security; Microsoft also recommends WPA3 when both the router and PC support it. A WPA3-only network will not admit a device that supports only WPA2. Apple’s router security recommendations and Microsoft’s Windows guidance explain the compatibility conditions.

WPA2/WPA3 Transitional
Also called mixed mode, this setting lets WPA3-capable devices use WPA3 while older compatible clients use WPA2 Personal (AES). Apple recommends it when older devices need compatibility. It is not a guarantee that every legacy device will connect: Google notes that some WPA2 devices can have trouble with transition mode, so test the devices you actually use after changing the router setting. Apple’s explanation of transitional mode and Google Nest’s troubleshooting guidance cover these caveats.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
WPA2 Personal (AES)
WPA2 Personal using AES is a fallback if a device or router cannot use the newer options. If the router lets you choose an encryption or cipher type, select AES. Do not mistake this fallback for older WPA/WPA2 mixed settings or TKIP; avoid both. Apple’s router recommendations specify AES for WPA2.
Which setting should you choose?
| Setting | Best fit | Compatibility and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WPA3 Personal | Your router and important devices support WPA3. | A WPA2-only device cannot join a WPA3-only network. |
| WPA2/WPA3 Transitional | You need WPA3 and older WPA2 clients on one network. | Some legacy devices may still have trouble; test them after switching. |
| WPA2 Personal (AES) | A device or router cannot use the newer choices. | Use AES; avoid TKIP and obsolete security modes. |
This is a trade-off between protection and compatibility: WPA3-only prioritizes the newer protocol, transitional mode accommodates some legacy clients, and WPA2 Personal (AES) is the fallback. Cisco’s deployment guidance likewise distinguishes WPA3-only maximum security from mixed WPA2/WPA3 deployments for legacy clients. Cisco’s WPA3 deployment guidance describes that distinction.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
How to change the setting and check your devices
- Open your router’s administration app or web page and find its Wi-Fi security settings. The exact menu path and labels depend on the router and firmware.
- Check whether the phones, computers, televisions, printers, and smart-home devices that need access support WPA3.
- If they do, select WPA3 Personal, save the setting, and reconnect the devices that matter to your household.
- If a WPA2-only device cannot join, select WPA2/WPA3 Transitional. Confirm that it connects and remains stable; compatibility varies.
- If it still fails, use WPA2 Personal (AES) as a fallback or put the legacy device on a separate network if your router permits it. Do not weaken the main network with WEP, old WPA, or TKIP.
Menu names and client support vary, and there is no universal setting path that applies to every router. Check the documentation for your equipment when the available choices or device requirements are uncertain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStrengthen the network beyond the security mode
The security mode is only one part of Wi-Fi protection. Use a strong, unique passphrase whichever mode you choose. The NSA’s 2023 home-network best practices recommend at least 20 characters for WPA3 or WPA2/3 configurations and, where feasible, separate primary, guest, and IoT networks. These measures do not mean that a security mode alone protects every device.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
When a router upgrade makes sense
You do not need to buy a router simply because WPA3 exists. Consider an upgrade only if your current router cannot offer the security mode you need and you decide newer Wi-Fi security is worth replacing it. Microsoft recommends considering an upgrade when an older router does not support newer security standards. Microsoft’s guidance on older routers discusses that option.
