For most first-time players, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake). Capcom’s official newcomer guide recommends it as a “great jumping-on point.” Choose a different entry if you specifically want first-person horror, the series’ original mansion-era roots, or a more action-focused adventure.

Capcom’s guide says, “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” PlayStation’s official introduction adds that “There is no right answer here”: the best first game depends on the experience you want.
Why Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the best default
The 2019 remake is the clearest recommendation when you have no particular preference. It gives you a modernized version of the Raccoon City story and introduces two central characters, Leon and Claire. PlayStation describes it as retaining the franchise’s roots while updating its visuals and gameplay.
That makes it a useful middle ground: it is a modern entry point into the series’ survival-horror identity without requiring you to begin with the older mansion-era design. Capcom’s recommendation is specifically for the 2019 Resident Evil 2, not the original 1998 release.

Choose by perspective, tone, and story
For first-person immersion: Resident Evil 7, then Village
Resident Evil 7 biohazard is the better fit if you want a first-person viewpoint and a new story centered on Ethan Winters in Louisiana. PlayStation characterizes it as a new beginning for the series. Resident Evil Village continues Ethan’s story, so playing those two in order gives you the clearest context for that thread.
For the series’ original setting: Resident Evil
The original Resident Evil, or its 2002 remake, takes you to the mansion with the S.T.A.R.S. team. Pick this route if you want to encounter the setting and classic design at their roots. It is a preference-driven alternative, rather than Capcom’s general recommendation for newcomers.

For action and a later Leon story: Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 is set after Resident Evil 2 and follows Leon on a rescue mission in a European village. Capcom’s retrospective describes a stronger action direction, making it a sensible choice if action matters more to you than starting with the series’ most representative survival-horror entry. It is later in Leon’s story, so it is not the best choice if you want his timeline from the beginning.
Where Resident Evil Requiem fits
Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth main installment and launched on February 27, 2026. Capcom describes it as combining survival horror, combat, investigations, puzzles, and resource management; it supports first- or third-person play. Its mix makes it an option for players interested in a newer main entry, but it does not replace Resident Evil 2 as Capcom’s explicit newcomer recommendation.

Capcom announced Requiem for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The announcement also lists Resident Evil 7 and Village for Switch 2 and identifies their earlier Switch releases as cloud versions. Check the current listing for your platform and region: availability is not uniform across every game or device.

If you want the default recommendation, look for Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake). Check the storefront for your platform and confirm the edition before purchasing; availability and supported platforms can differ by region and change over time. The same check is especially important for the original or 2002 remake, Resident Evil 7, and Village.

Capcom reported cumulative series sales of 174 million units as of June 30, 2025; its 2025 Integrated Report separately said sales exceeded 170 million as of March 31, 2025. Those are figures from different reporting dates, and neither tells you which game is the right first choice.
