Start by finding which apps are using battery in the background, then adjust those apps rather than disabling background activity across the whole phone. Keep notification permission enabled—and retain background access for apps that need to alert you promptly. Broad saver modes can delay background work, so verify important alerts after changing settings.

Check what is using battery before changing settings

On iPhone, open Settings > Battery and review battery usage and app details. Apple describes “Background Activity” as battery use from work such as music playback or location tracking while an app is in the background. Notifications can also wake the device; if an app is waking it frequently, Apple recommends adjusting that app’s notifications. See Apple’s battery usage guidance.

This helps distinguish an app doing useful background work from one whose activity you may want to limit. The cited guidance provides no universal battery-savings percentage for any setting.

iPhone: choose between targeted changes and Low Power Mode

Background App Refresh

Background App Refresh controls whether apps can refresh content in the background. Low Power Mode turns it off, so apps may not refresh content in the background as usual. Apple’s guidance does not say that turning off Background App Refresh universally prevents push notifications; do not treat it as a guaranteed notification switch. See Apple’s explanation of Low Power Mode.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode is a broad, temporary battery measure, not a way to preserve every app’s immediate background activity. In addition to turning off Background App Refresh, it turns off email fetch and automatic downloads, temporarily pauses iCloud Photos, and reduces brightness and visual effects.

  • iPhone 15 and later: Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
  • iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.

Apple says Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the iPhone is charged to 80% or higher. See the iPhone User Guide.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Adaptive Power

On supported iPhones, Adaptive Power can limit background activity, make performance adjustments, and turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%. Its availability and default state vary by model. Apple lists iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air as having it on by default, while certain iPhone 16 models and iPhone 15 Pro models have it off by default. Check Settings > Battery > Power Mode on your own phone rather than assuming it is available or enabled. Details are in Apple’s Adaptive Power guidance.

Android: understand the whole-phone and per-app controls

Battery Saver

Android Battery Saver limits or turns off background activity. Google warns that some features, network connections, and apps may experience delays. Because controls and labels can differ by manufacturer, consult your phone maker’s instructions for the exact path. Treat Battery Saver as a whole-phone tradeoff and check whether essential alerts still arrive on time. See Android Help’s Battery Saver guidance.

Pixel Adaptive Battery and app optimization

Google says Pixel Adaptive Battery learns how you use apps and may reduce performance and delay notifications. For an individual app, the current Pixel Help path is Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > App battery usage > Allow background usage. Google recommends leaving the app set to Optimized for most situations.

Turning off optimization lets an app run more while unused and can use more battery. Some steps require Android 14 or later, and optimization is unavailable for some essential services. See Google Pixel Phone Help.

Keep important notifications timely with targeted checks

If an important app’s alerts arrive late, check that app before relaxing battery controls across the phone. On Android, confirm its notification permission and background-usage setting; on either platform, check the phone maker’s current instructions for the relevant app and operating-system version. If you change an app’s background allowance, limit the change to the app that needs prompt activity and verify that its alerts arrive as expected.

  1. Identify the app whose background use or delayed alerts are the concern.
  2. Check that the app is allowed to send notifications.
  3. Review its battery or background setting. Prefer the default optimized setting unless there is a concrete need for more background activity.
  4. Make one targeted change, then test an alert you rely on.

This is a practical way to balance battery use against alert timing, not a guarantee: delivery can depend on the app and the device’s settings.

How to choose the right setting

Setting Scope Alert-timing consideration Availability
iPhone Background App Refresh Background content refresh Turning it off does not, according to the cited Apple guidance, universally suppress push notifications. iPhone; exact behavior depends on app and iOS.
iPhone Low Power Mode Whole device Background work is curtailed; it is not a guarantee that all app activity remains immediate. iPhone; path varies between iPhone 15 and later and iPhone 14 and earlier.
iPhone Adaptive Power Whole device May limit background activity and can turn on Low Power Mode at 20% battery. Supported models only; availability and default state vary.
Android Battery Saver Whole device Google warns that some apps, features, and network connections may be delayed. Android; manufacturer controls and labels vary.
Pixel app battery optimization One app Adaptive Battery may delay notifications; allowing more background use may help app activity but consumes more battery. Pixel guidance; some steps require Android 14 or later.

None of these official sources gives a comparable, general battery-life estimate. The practical choice is to keep broad restrictions for ordinary use, then make a narrow exception only when an app’s timely alerts matter.
