For most phone photos, getting focus and exposure right—and choosing the right mode for the scene—matters more than selecting the largest megapixel number. Megapixels describe image resolution, not whether the subject is sharp, highlights are preserved, or a dim scene is captured clearly. High-resolution capture can help when you need extra detail or plan to crop, but its benefit depends on your phone and the shot.
Start with the scene, not the megapixel count
A useful camera choice depends on what you are photographing and what you want from the image. For a bright sky behind a darker subject, HDR may help balance the scene. For a dim, mostly still subject, night mode can brighten the result, but it may take longer to capture. For a moving subject, focus and a suitable exposure matter; a long capture is not a dependable way to freeze motion.
There is no evidence here for a universal ranking of settings across every phone. Camera controls and results vary by model, software, and the physical camera hardware.
Settings that can make the biggest practical difference
Focus and exposure: get the subject sharp and the brightness right
Tap the subject you want the camera to focus on. If the image looks too bright or too dark, use the exposure control if your camera app offers one. On iPhone, Apple documents AE/AF Lock; supported Pixel phones offer a focus and exposure lock. The exact gesture and controls can vary, so check the camera app on your model.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

HDR: useful when a frame has both bright and dark areas
HDR is most relevant when a scene has a wide range of brightness—for example, a person in front of a bright window or a landscape with a bright sky and shaded foreground. Apple says HDR combines multiple exposures to retain more highlight and shadow detail, and that it is automatic by default when most effective on supported iPhones. Apple’s guide is specific to its supported models; other phones may handle HDR differently.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Night mode: brighter low-light photos, with a steadiness trade-off
For a dim, mostly still scene, try your phone’s night mode. On Pixel, Night Sight may capture for several seconds, so hold the phone steady until the photo finishes. For astrophotography, Google recommends placing a supported Pixel on a stable surface, stand, or tripod. A longer capture can help with still scenes, but it does not guarantee a sharp result if the phone or subject moves.

Google’s instructions for taking Pixel photos in low light or at night explain the mode and its stability requirements. These controls and behaviors should not be assumed to match every Android phone.
Zoom: the active lens can change
Zoom is not always just a crop from one camera. Pixel phones can automatically select lenses as you change zoom, and some models offer manual lens selection. That means different zoom settings can use different physical cameras and produce different detail; do not assume every zoom value is using the same lens.

When higher resolution is worth using
Choose a higher-resolution mode when you have a practical reason to record more pixels, such as preserving detail for a crop. It is not a universal quality switch: the manufacturer specifications establish which resolutions are available, not that the highest setting will make every photo look better.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Adjust your approach for the subject
- High-contrast scene: Tap the main subject, check its brightness, and use HDR if the phone offers it and the bright and dark areas need balancing.
- Dim, mostly still scene: Try night mode and keep the phone still while the capture completes.
- Moving subject: Prioritize focus and an exposure suited to the motion. Do not expect a multi-second low-light capture to freeze movement.
- Distant subject: Remember that zoom may switch lenses. If detail matters, try the available zoom options and inspect the result rather than assuming one zoom value is best.
- Image you plan to crop: Consider a supported high-resolution mode, then compare the result with your normal setting.
RAW is for an editing workflow, not an automatic upgrade
Some Pixel phones support RAW+JPEG capture. RAW can be useful if you intend to edit the image and want more latitude in post-processing, but it does not automatically create a better finished photo. If you do not plan to edit, the standard processed image may suit your needs better. Google explains camera app options in Change your Camera app settings.
What megapixels do—and do not—tell you
Megapixels indicate how many pixels an image records. They do not, by themselves, tell you whether the camera focused on the right subject, balanced the exposure, handled a high-contrast scene, or captured a moving subject sharply. The manufacturer pages cited here document settings and device support, not controlled, cross-brand image-quality comparisons. Treat megapixel count as one factor, especially when cropping or retaining detail matters, rather than a stand-alone measure of photo quality.
