Open-ear headphones leave the ear canal unsealed, but the best choice depends on how they sit on your ears and what you expect from sound, battery life, and durability. This shortlist covers clip-on earbuds and ear-hook earbuds; it does not include bone-conduction headsets, which use a different wearing design. It draws on published buying guides and reviews rather than a new, side-by-side hands-on test, so treat the picks as use-case recommendations—not a lab ranking.

How these five open-ear headphones differ

Open-ear designs can help you hear more of your surroundings than sealed earbuds, but they do not guarantee that you will notice every hazard. They also tend to trade some bass and listening privacy for an open fit, and wind can interfere with what you hear. If strong bass or isolation matters most, sealed in-ear headphones may suit you better.

The picks below represent distinct fits and priorities: a premium clip-on, an alternative clip-on, a general-purpose ear hook, a less expensive workout-oriented hook, and a clip-on with longer listed battery life. Prices and availability can change; check current listings before buying.

1. Bose Ultra Open Earbuds: a premium clip-on option

TechRadar identifies Bose Ultra Open Earbuds as a premium clip-style choice, while RTINGS names them its best tested open-ear headphones in its guide. Those judgments make them a useful starting point if you want the clip-on architecture, but neither review establishes that they will fit every ear comfortably.

#1 Best Overall

  • Open-Ear Awareness - SHOKZ's signature open-ear design helps you power through your workouts while keeping you safely aware of your surroundings. Leak-free listening ensures your audio remains for your ears only
  • Secure Stable, Lightweight Fit - The weight-optimized design of this unibody frame integrates a Ni-Ti alloy memory wire and ergonomic ear hooks. The result is a secure, comfortable fit that defies slips and shift even during gym sessions or cycling.
  • Dedicated EQ Modes - Customize your audio experience with our dedicated EQ modes on the Shokz App. Enjoy pure bone conduction sound with the newly launched Classic Mode, or boost your audio in noisy environments with Volume Boost Mode.
  • Crystal-Clear Calls - Strategically positioned dual wind-resistant microphones and an AI noise reduction algorithm filter out 96.5% of background noise, including wind at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour.

RTINGS notes that ear shape and piercings can affect comfort. If you have prominent piercings or know that clip-style jewelry or accessories tend to press uncomfortably against your ears, treat fit as the key question rather than assuming an open design will be comfortable. Check the return policy and, where possible, try them on before committing.

2. Shokz OpenFit 2+: the leading hook-style candidate

TechRadar names the OpenFit 2+ its top pick for overall performance among the models in its guide. Its ear-hook style is a different proposition from a clip-on: the hook rests around the ear, which may appeal to listeners who want a more anchored fit for movement.

That recommendation is a guide’s assessment, not a universal verdict or a direct comparison conducted for this article. Compare the fit and controls against your own priorities, and confirm current price, battery specifications, and water-resistance rating on the product listing before purchase.

3. Shokz OpenFit Air 2: a lighter workout-oriented hook

Tom’s Guide reports that the OpenFit Air 2 launched in August 2026 at $129 in the U.S. and £129 in the U.K. Those are reported launch prices, not a promise of today’s retail price. The publication also reports a weight of 7.2 g per earbud and describes its flexible ear hook as workout-friendly, positioning it below higher-end OpenFit models in price.

This pick is worth considering if you want an ear hook for exercise and are comparing the lower-priced option in the line. “Workout-friendly” does not establish a particular water-resistance rating: check the manufacturer’s current specifications for the exact model and confirm that its rating suits your activity.

4. Shokz OpenDots One: a clip-on with a notable battery listing

TechRadar’s guide lists up to 10 hours of listening from the OpenDots One earbuds and 40 hours with the charging case. These are the guide’s listed figures; confirm them against the manufacturer’s current specifications and remember that actual runtime depends on use. The guide also describes this model as a more affordable clip-style alternative.

Do not assume it is suitable for rain or strenuous workouts: TechRadar says the model is not waterproof. If water exposure is part of your routine, verify the current official durability rating and choose a product whose rating matches that exposure.

5. Huawei FreeClip 2: another clip-on to consider

SoundGuys includes the Huawei FreeClip 2 in its updated open-ear guide. It gives readers another clip-style option to compare with Bose and Shokz, but the available source information here does not establish a specific advantage in sound, comfort, battery, or durability for this model. Check SoundGuys’ current guide and the manufacturer’s specifications, then judge whether the fit works for your ears.

Choose by fit, activity, and sound—not the ranking alone

Clip-on earbuds

Clip-ons attach around the outer ear rather than sealing the canal. Their comfort depends on ear shape and where pressure lands; piercings may also interfere. If possible, try a pair for more than a brief fitting, and pay attention to whether it shifts or pinches during the movement you actually plan to do.

Ear-hook earbuds

Hooks wrap around the ear and may provide a more secure-feeling fit for exercise. Check that the hook stays comfortable over a full session and does not conflict with glasses or other gear. A secure fit is not the same as a water-resistance rating, so check that separately.

Bone-conduction headphones

Bone-conduction models are another open-ear category, but they are not included in these five picks. They use a different wearing architecture, so compare them as a separate option rather than treating them as interchangeable with clip-ons or ear hooks.

Sound, privacy, and awareness

Because these designs do not seal the ear canal, outside sound remains more accessible than with closed in-ear earbuds. That can suit some office, walking, and workout routines, but it is not a safety feature you can rely on: keep your attention on traffic and other hazards. The open design also means sound can escape and low frequencies may be less satisfying. Wind can be another drawback, especially outdoors.

Battery, water resistance, and controls

Match battery life to your longest expected listening session, and check whether a quoted figure applies to the earbuds alone or includes charging-case top-ups. For exercise or wet weather, look up the exact model’s current water-resistance rating rather than inferring it from marketing language. Finally, consider whether the controls are easy to use while moving and whether their functions suit your routine.

What to verify before buying

  • Confirm the exact model name and current availability; model lineups and retail prices change.
  • Check fit and comfort for your ear shape, piercings, glasses, and planned activity.
  • Look up current manufacturer specifications for battery, water resistance, and controls.
  • Decide whether awareness is worth the trade-off in bass, privacy, and wind performance.
  • Read the cited guide or review for its full evaluation; these picks are drawn from published coverage, not a new comparative test.
