After a Galaxy update, first check which One UI version is installed; then review the notification panels, pop-ups and lock-screen privacy settings that affect how you use the phone. You do not need to change everything. Menu labels and feature availability vary by model, carrier and software version, so use the paths below as version-specific guidance rather than a universal checklist.
Check your One UI version first
Open Settings > About phone > Software information to see the One UI version, Android version and build number. To review the latest update and its summary, go to Settings > Software update and open Last update if that option appears. Some devices use different labels, such as System updates. Samsung’s [update instructions] describe where to check for updates, while its [One UI 7 guide] and [One UI 6.1.1 guide] explain version-specific interface changes.
If a path below does not match your phone, search Settings for the feature name—for example, “lock screen notifications” or “notification pop-up style.” Samsung’s [One UI 8 guide] describes using Settings search and cautions that menu names and availability can vary by device.
Choose how Notifications and Quick settings open
One UI 7: separate panels or one combined view
On newer Galaxy devices running One UI 7, swipe down from the upper-left area of the screen to open Notifications, or from the upper-right area to open Quick settings. On One UI 6.1.1 or earlier, the same swipe gesture opens the combined panel.

If your One UI 7 device supports a combined view, open Quick settings by swiping down from the upper right, tap Edit (the pencil icon), then go to Panel settings > Notification and quick settings view > Together. Samsung notes that Together may not be available on every device. See the [One UI 7 panel instructions] for the supported-device context.
- Keep them separate if you prefer a direct swipe to notifications or Quick settings without switching views.
- Choose Together if one combined panel is easier to navigate and the option is available.
Optional: tidy Quick settings buttons
To make frequently used controls easier to reach, open Quick settings, tap Edit, then rearrange or remove buttons. This is a personal layout choice, not a required post-update fix; Samsung documents the controls in its [One UI 7 guide].

Set notification pop-ups to brief or detailed
On supported One UI 8 devices, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, choose an app, then tap Notification pop-up style. Select Brief for a more compact alert or Detailed when you want more information in the pop-up. You can choose differently for individual apps. The exact path and availability may vary; Samsung lists the feature in its [One UI 8 guide].

On supported One UI 8 devices, the global control is Settings > Notifications > Hide content while locked. Showing previews is convenient; hiding them reduces what someone else can read from the locked display.

Review notification style, order and filters
Samsung’s US One UI 7 notification guidance describes additional controls. Treat these as version- and device-dependent options, not settings every Galaxy owner will see.

Pick a lock-screen notification style
Where available, choose Dot, Icons or Cards to control how notifications appear on the lock screen. Samsung documents these styles in its [One UI 7 notification guidance].
Sort notifications by time or priority
Go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Sort notifications, then choose By time or By priority if those options appear. Sorting by time emphasizes what arrived most recently; sorting by priority can surface what the system treats as more important. Choose the order that makes it easier for you to find the alerts you need.

Check filters and lock-screen extras only if useful

Review these if you want to control which notifications or supported ongoing activities appear; skip them if the current behavior suits you.

Samsung’s guidance is regional and feature support can depend on model, carrier and rollout. Its [One UI 8 guide] explicitly notes that menu names and availability can differ. If a setting is missing, first confirm the installed One UI version, then search Settings by the option’s name rather than assuming the same menu nesting across Galaxy phones.
