There is no single Nvidia GPU that is a definitive equivalent to Apple’s M5 GPU across games, creative apps, and compute tasks. A useful point of comparison is the desktop GeForce RTX 4060: in one Geekbench comparison, an M5 system with a 10-core GPU scored 78,823, while an RTX 4060 system scored 101,968. Those are results from different systems and Geekbench versions, not proof that the cards are interchangeable.
Why there is no one-to-one equivalent
The M5 GPU is integrated into Apple silicon, while the GeForce RTX 4060 is a discrete desktop graphics card. They belong to different computer platforms and their performance depends on the application, graphics API, system design, and power and cooling limits. A model that is a useful comparison in one benchmark may not be the closest match for a game or professional application.
Configuration matters, too. Apple lists the base M5 in the 13-inch MacBook Air with either an 8-core or 10-core GPU. Identify the specific Mac and GPU configuration before comparing benchmark results. Apple’s specifications also list hardware-accelerated ray tracing and 153 GB/s memory bandwidth for that MacBook Air; those product specifications do not establish an Nvidia equivalent.
How the M5 10-core GPU compares with an RTX 4060 in Geekbench
Geekbench Browser lists a 78,823 GPU score for an Apple M5 Mac17,2 with a 10-core GPU, running Geekbench 6.7.1, macOS 26.5, and 32 GB of memory. Its listed RTX 4060 result is 101,968 in Geekbench 6.3.0 on a Windows 11 Pro desktop with an Intel Core i7-14700KF and 32 GB of DDR5 system memory; the card has 8 GB of device memory. - AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
In this sample, the RTX 4060 system scored higher. But it is not a controlled same-system test: the operating systems, host processors, and benchmark versions differ. Treat the figures as a comparison of those two submitted systems in Geekbench, not as a universal performance ratio or a verdict for every workload.
What Apple’s M5 graphics claims do—and do not—show
Apple says the base M5 GPU is up to 30 percent faster than M4 and up to 2.5 times faster than M1. Apple also claims up to a 45 percent graphics uplift in apps that use ray tracing. Those are Apple’s comparisons against earlier Apple chips, not comparisons with Nvidia graphics cards.

Apple’s test notes say the M5 testing took place in September 2025 on a preproduction 14-inch MacBook Pro with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. Apple compared it with specified M4 and M1 systems, used selected industry-standard benchmarks, and cautions that results reflect approximate MacBook Pro performance. Apple’s M5 announcement and test notes provide the claim and its qualifications.
Choose a comparison that matches your workload
- Games: Compare frame rates in the same game, at the same resolution and settings, and check which graphics APIs and features the game supports on each platform. A general GPU score cannot predict every game’s performance.
- Creative and compute applications: Look for results in the actual app or task. Keep Metal results separate from OpenCL or other API results; they are not directly interchangeable.
- Ray tracing: Apple lists hardware-accelerated ray tracing for the M5 MacBook Air, and Apple’s uplift claim applies to apps using ray tracing. It does not establish equal ray-tracing performance to an RTX 4060.
- Memory and system limits: Record the Mac’s GPU-core configuration and system memory, and the Nvidia card’s dedicated VRAM. Memory capacity and bandwidth are different specifications; neither alone establishes which GPU will be faster for a task.
- Desktop versus laptop: The cited RTX 4060 result is from a desktop card. Do not apply it to a laptop RTX 4060, whose performance depends on the laptop’s implementation and power limits.
Why benchmark charts can disagree
Benchmark results are meaningful only within the context of the suite, version, API, and test. Geekbench’s Metal chart, for example, aggregates user-uploaded Geekbench 7 results and includes a GPU only after at least five unique results are available. It sets the RTX 4060 baseline to 100,000, with higher chart scores indicating better results. That Metal-chart scale is separate from the Geekbench 6.7.1 comparison above; do not combine their scores. Geekbench’s Metal chart describes its methodology.

NanoReview’s third-party comparison compiles multiple benchmark suites and shows that relative results can vary by test: its Geekbench compute totals favor the RTX 4060, while some individual M5 subtests score higher. Use such an aggregation as secondary context, and prioritize the methodology of the particular benchmark relevant to your workload. View NanoReview’s comparison.

If you need a concrete Nvidia reference point, compare the M5 10-core GPU with the desktop RTX 4060—but describe it as a benchmark comparator, not an equivalent. The available Geekbench sample puts the M5 result below the RTX 4060 result under different system and software conditions. For a decision about a particular game or application, use matched, workload-specific results and the exact M5 configuration and Nvidia card you are considering.

An M5 Mac’s GPU is part of its Apple silicon system and cannot be replaced by installing a desktop RTX 4060. The comparison is useful for understanding benchmark performance, not as an upgrade or compatibility recommendation.
