There is no verified New York City winner in the available comparison. In Android Central’s 2026 real-world test of Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) and Sony WF-1000XM6, Bose did better in a coffee shop and beneath an air conditioner, while Sony performed better in a crowded mall and felt more comfortable to the reviewer. The comparison did not take place on a New York subway or street, so it cannot establish which earbuds work best across NYC.
What the Bose–Sony comparison found
In an August 11, 2026 comparison, Android Central contributor Brady Snyder tried the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) and Sony WF-1000XM6 in three everyday settings. He listened first with noise cancellation on and no music, then with music at about 50% volume. With music playing in the coffee-shop test, the difference between the earbuds became less noticeable.
| Setting | Reviewer’s finding | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee shop | Bose performed better. | Bose had the edge in this particular shop; the account does not establish how it would perform in every café. |
| Beneath an air conditioner | Bose performed better. Snyder measured that air conditioner at 60 dB. | This is one location’s observation, not a general noise level or a controlled cancellation measurement. |
| Crowded mall, including a supermarket, food court and concourse | Sony performed better, especially against blended conversation and higher-pitched food-court sounds. | The result points to differences in how the pair handled this mix of voices and other sounds—not a universal ranking. |
Snyder described the comparison as a real-world test, not a lab benchmark. It reports his experience rather than measured decibel reduction, controlled repeated trials, blinded listening or independent replication. Read the Android Central comparison.
Why one pair can win in one place and lose in another
Noise cancellation is not a single score that predicts how earbuds will sound everywhere. Low-frequency rumble, steady mechanical noise, higher-pitched sounds and overlapping voices are different challenges. The cited comparison found Bose stronger in two of its settings and Sony stronger in the crowded mall; it does not provide frequency-response or noise-reduction measurements to quantify those differences.

Fit also affects what reaches your ears. Bose says its QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) combine active noise reduction with passive isolation from the physical seal of the earbud and silicone eartips. Its system uses internal and external microphones to sense sound and produce an opposing signal. A secure, comfortable seal is therefore part of the experience, not a minor detail. Bose lists nine combinations of eartips and stability bands to help users find a fit. See Bose’s product details and explanation of its noise reduction.
Comfort can change the practical choice, too. Snyder preferred Sony for comfort and said Bose’s tighter seal contributed to its isolation but felt less comfortable during longer sessions. That is one reviewer’s fit experience; ear shape and tip choice can make comfort personal.

What this comparison can—and cannot—say about NYC
The comparison took place in a local coffee shop, under an air conditioner and in a crowded mall. It did not test a New York subway, platform, bus, street or other NYC location. It therefore cannot support a claim that either pair is the best noise-canceling earbud for New York City.

For an NYC-specific conclusion, a test would need to identify the actual route or locations and explain the listening settings, ear-tip selection, number of trials and whether results were subjective or instrumented. Without those details and city testing, readers should treat the Bose–Sony results as useful evidence about three particular environments—not as a verdict on NYC.

How to use product claims and rankings
Manufacturer specifications and editorial recommendations can provide context, but they are not interchangeable with comparative testing. Bose lists six hours of battery life for the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen); actual battery life can vary with use and settings. Bose also rates them IPX4 for water resistance. These are separate buying considerations, not evidence of stronger noise cancellation.
Apple says AirPods Pro 3 offer “Up to 2x more” active noise cancellation than AirPods Pro 2 and up to eight hours of listening with ANC enabled on one charge. Those are Apple’s claims about its own products, not an independent comparison against Bose or Sony. See Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 information.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoosing between Bose and Sony based on the available evidence
- Consider Bose if the coffee-shop and air-conditioner settings resemble your main listening environments. The reported advantage applies to Snyder’s test, not every café or source of mechanical noise.
- Consider Sony if crowded spaces with overlapping voices and higher-pitched sounds matter most, or if comfort during longer sessions is a priority. These were Snyder’s reported strengths for Sony.
- Prioritize fit if you cannot maintain a comfortable seal. Passive isolation depends on how the earbuds and tips fit your ears, and a fit that becomes uncomfortable can undermine day-to-day usefulness.
- Separate cancellation from other needs. Battery life and water resistance can inform a purchase, but neither establishes which model cancels more noise in your setting.
Because the comparison was not a controlled measurement, there is no evidence here for a universal winner or a precise numerical difference in cancellation. The most useful conclusion is environmental: Bose led in two tested settings, Sony led in the crowded mall, and the reviewer found Sony more comfortable.
