Review microphone access app by app: keep it for features that genuinely need audio, such as calls, recording, dictation, voice messages, or voice accessibility, and turn it off for apps without a clear microphone task. On iPhone, check Microphone and Speech Recognition separately. On Android, review each app’s microphone permission; treat the device-wide microphone switch and voice-assistant wake-word settings as separate controls.

Start with the apps that can use your microphone

A microphone permission is useful when an app’s feature depends on hearing you. It is reasonable to retain access for calling, recording, voice messages, dictation, or an accessibility tool you rely on. If an app has no clear audio-input feature, deny its microphone access and restore it later if a feature you want stops working.

Changing a permission controls whether the app is allowed to use that resource under the operating system’s rules; it is not a historical audit of what an app may have accessed or how it handles data. If an app stops offering a voice feature after you deny access, revisit its permission only if you want to use that feature.

Change microphone and speech permissions on iPhone

Review Microphone access

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
  2. Review the apps listed there. Apple says this list contains apps that have requested microphone access.
  3. Switch off access for an app that does not need audio input. Leave it on for features you choose to use that depend on the microphone.

Apple requires apps to request permission before using the iPhone microphone. While an app uses the microphone without the camera, iPhone shows an orange indicator; green indicates camera use, including when the camera and microphone are used together. Control Center can also report recent microphone or camera use. These indicators help you notice activity, but they do not replace reviewing permissions. Apple’s iPhone hardware-permissions guide explains the indicators and controls.

Check Speech Recognition separately

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Speech Recognition and review the apps that requested this permission. Speech Recognition is a separate privacy category from Microphone, so changing one list does not change the other. If your goal is to reduce app access related to speech, inspect both categories. Apple’s overview of privacy categories is available in About privacy and Location Services in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. The category name alone does not establish how every individual app processes speech.

DJI Mic Mini (2 TX + 1 Mobile RX), Ultralight, Active Noise Cancelling
  • Small but Mighty - The DJI Mic Mini Transmitter is small and ultralight, weighing only 10 g [1], making it comfortable to wear, discreet, and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Detail-Rich Sound - Mic Mini delivers high-quality audio. A 300m max transmission range [2] ensures stable recording, even in bustling outdoor environments like a busy street.
  • Record Longer - Two transmitters and a mobile receiver offer a maximum operating time of 11.5 hours [5]. That's enough time for high-usage scenarios like interviews.
  • DJI Ecosystem Direct Connection - With DJI OsmoAudio, a transmitter can connect to Osmo Nano, Osmo 360, Osmo Mobile 7P, Osmo Action 5 Pro, Osmo Action 4, or Osmo Pocket 3 without a receiver, delivering premium audio.
  • Powerful Noise Cancelling - 2 noise cancellation levels are available—Basic is ideal for quiet indoor settings, while Strong excels in noisy environments to give you clear vocals. [8]
  1. For one app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions > Microphone.
  2. To review apps by permission type, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager > Microphone, if those labels are available on your phone.
  3. Choose the option that fits the app’s use. Depending on device and version, choices may include Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow.

Prefer a per-app decision for selective, lasting control. Google’s Android permission guidance notes that menu paths and options can vary; some instructions for Pixel devices apply only from Android 11 onward. The “All the time” option in its permission guidance is for location, not microphone. See Change app permissions on your Android phone for Google’s current steps.

Use the device-wide switch only when you mean to block broadly

On supported devices, look under Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Privacy controls for Microphone access. Turning it off blocks microphone access broadly rather than changing one app’s permission. Use it as a temporary or deliberate device-wide block, not as a substitute for choosing which individual apps should have access. The switch may not be present on every phone or Android version.

Decide separately whether you want voice activation

A voice assistant’s wake-word setting is not the same as an app’s microphone permission. Google says its Assistant uses the microphone in the background when Hey Google is enabled. If you do not want hands-free wake-up, review and turn off that voice-activation setting while retaining other ways to use the Assistant if desired. Google describes Assistant as waiting in standby for activation and acknowledges possible unintended activations; that is Google’s description of how the feature works, not an independent guarantee about every device or configuration. See How Google Assistant is designed for your privacy and Manage your Google app permissions.

Keep accessibility voice tools working when you need them

Google Voice Access needs microphone permission to hear spoken commands. Its guide says Voice Access listens while active; on Android 12 or later, a green microphone indicator appears during that listening. You can say “Stop listening” or pause Voice Access from its notification or shortcut. If you rely on this feature, consider pausing it when you are not using it rather than revoking a permission needed for its commands.

Google says speech is primarily processed on-device, but may be sent to Google servers depending on device configuration and system language. Google says audio sent to its servers is used to provide the service and is not saved; audio and transcripts are not stored unless Help improve Voice Access Commands is enabled. These are Google’s statements about Voice Access, and the described behavior can depend on configuration and language. Its guide also notes that Voice Access listens for commands rather than a particular person’s voice, so someone else may control an awake, unlocked device while it is listening. Consult Get started with Voice Access spoken commands for the feature’s controls and details.

For offline recognition, Google’s Voice Access guide recommends downloaded language packs on Android 13 and newer. It lists English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Japanese; the guide notes that Portuguese and Japanese support only the top 25 commands. Language availability can change, so confirm current support in the app.

Control Best fit Trade-off
Per-app microphone permission Keep access for a feature you use that needs audio; deny it when there is no clear microphone task. Selective control, though a denied permission can prevent the app’s voice features from working.
Android device-wide microphone access A temporary or intentional broad block on supported phones. Blocks microphone access broadly rather than selectively by app.
Hey Google voice activation Keep it on for hands-free wake-up; turn it off if you do not want wake-word activation. Turning it off removes that voice-activation method, not necessarily other Assistant methods or every app’s microphone access.
Voice Access listening Keep its permission if you rely on spoken accessibility commands; pause listening when not using it. While active, it listens for commands and is not limited to recognizing one person’s voice.

Check the indicators when audio use surprises you

  • iPhone: orange means microphone use without the camera; green signals camera use, including combined camera and microphone use. Control Center can show recent use.
  • Android Voice Access: Google’s guide identifies a green microphone indicator while Voice Access is active on Android 12 or later.

An indicator is a prompt to check what is active, not a reason to assume every app needs permanent access. Revisit the relevant app permission or voice-activation setting and adjust the specific control that matches the behavior you want to change.
