Start with headset fit and lens alignment, then set a boundary that gives you room to move safely. After that, choose optional tracking features and decide whether longer battery life is worth Battery Saver’s lower brightness and refresh rate. There is no single ideal setup for everyone.
What should I change first on a Quest 3?
- Fit the headset and align the lenses. Adjust the headset position and strap until it feels stable and comfortable, then move the continuous IPD slider to align the lenses with your eyes. Make small adjustments while looking at clear text or a menu. Meta confirms the Quest 3 has a continuous IPD slider, but there is no one ideal setting for every person. Meta’s device comparison lists the feature.
- Set a boundary for your actual play space. Choose stationary or room-scale play according to the activity and available space. Meta lists 6.5 by 6.5 feet as the minimum room-scale area and recommends extra clearance around walls, furniture, and other obstacles. Move hazards before you play, and redraw the boundary if the room layout changes. Meta’s boundary guidance describes the space requirements.
- Decide whether passthrough and hand tracking suit you. Quest 3 supports full-color passthrough and hand tracking. Passthrough can help you see your surroundings in mixed-reality use; hand tracking enables controller-free interaction in supported experiences. These are optional features, not required performance tweaks. If you enable tracking, review the privacy controls in the headset or Meta Horizon app. Meta says raw images from hand and body sensors are processed on device and overwritten instantaneously when hand or body tracking is enabled; that statement applies to those raw images, not necessarily every kind of derived data. See Meta’s privacy policy.
- Turn on Battery Saver only if runtime matters more than display behavior. The documented path is Settings > General > Power. Battery Saver reduces brightness to 40%, lowers refresh rate to 72 Hz, enables fixed foveated rendering level 3, and disables certain CPU/GPU boosts. Meta does not quantify how much additional runtime this produces. Meta’s Battery Saver documentation lists the setting and its effects.
How to choose a safe boundary
Room-scale space should reflect the movements your activity requires, not just the minimum listed area. Keep extra distance between the boundary and walls, furniture, pets, and other hazards. Space Sense can show outlines of people, pets, and objects that cross the boundary, but it is an added awareness feature—not a substitute for clearing the play area. Meta describes it in its boundary guidance.
Should you change the refresh rate?
Meta lists Quest 3 as supporting refresh rates up to 120 Hz. Its developer reference lists 72, 80, 90, and 120 Hz and explains configuration through Android Debug Bridge (ADB), but that is developer guidance rather than a verified consumer settings route. It also says those ADB changes do not persist after reboot. Not every app runs at 120 Hz, so leave advanced configuration alone unless you have a specific reason and understand the developer workflow. Battery Saver’s documented 72 Hz behavior is the practical choice to know about when prioritizing runtime. See Meta’s refresh-rate developer reference.
What about accessories?
Meta lists Quest 3 battery life at approximately two hours; that is a vendor estimate, not a guaranteed runtime for every use. If you need more power, a compatible battery strap or USB-C power accessory is an optional alternative to changing display behavior. Verify compatibility for any specific accessory before buying it. If comfort remains an issue after adjusting the included fit and IPD, consider whether an accessory addresses that particular problem; no purchase is required for the settings above.
