For one prerecorded 1080p30 YouTube stream, Amazon Lightsail’s $7/month Linux plan is the strongest low-cost starting point in the available figures: it includes 1 GB memory, 40 GB SSD storage and 2 TB transfer. The $5/month plan includes only 1 TB, which is less than the roughly 1.62 TB a continuous 5 Mbps stream sends in 30 days, before overhead. These are plan and bandwidth calculations—not results of a sustained performance test—so verify current terms and test your stream from the region you plan to use.
Why Lightsail’s $7 plan is the safer starting point
YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 video at 1080p30. At that rate, a stream running continuously for 30 days sends about 1.62 TB in decimal units: 5,000,000 bits per second multiplied by 2,592,000 seconds, divided by eight. That calculation excludes protocol overhead, restarts, updates and other server traffic.
AWS’s current Lightsail pricing page lists these Linux bundles:
| Lightsail plan | Memory | SSD | Included transfer | Fit for continuous 1080p30 at 5 Mbps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $5/month | 0.5 GB | 20 GB | 1 TB | Too tight: the estimated stream volume alone exceeds the allowance. |
| $7/month | 1 GB | 40 GB | 2 TB | More defensible, but leaves moderate headroom before overhead and other traffic. |
These are bundle figures listed by Amazon Web Services’ Lightsail pricing page, accessed in 2026. Confirm the current price, transfer definition, taxes and availability for your account and region before purchasing. A plan’s transfer allowance is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

Calculate transfer for your chosen stream
The bitrate multiplied by run time determines the approximate outbound data requirement. Using a 30-day month, the approximate volumes below are calculated from YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendations, not published monthly usage figures from YouTube:
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Approximate transfer for 30 uninterrupted days |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 1.62 TB |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 0.97 TB |
Actual usage can be higher once overhead and non-stream traffic are included. If you need 1080p30, the 1 TB bundle is not a sensible fit for a month-long continuous stream. Lowering bitrate to fit an allowance is not automatically the right fix: choose a stream quality that suits your content and audience, then buy enough transfer with room for operational traffic.
Check what the server must do with your video
Relaying a compatible file
If your prerecorded video already has settings that work for your stream and your setup can pass it through without re-encoding, the server workload may be lighter than transcoding. Even then, do not assume a small instance will run reliably without testing the exact file, audio and streaming software for a sustained period.
Rank #2
Re-encoding or transcoding
Changing the video format, resolution or bitrate while streaming can require substantially more CPU than relaying compatible media. A plan’s memory, storage and transfer figures do not establish that its CPU can handle your particular transcoding workload. Test it under the intended settings before relying on it.
Keep enough disk space for the media, logs and any temporary files your software creates. Lightsail’s listed SSD capacity is not a substitute for checking the size of your actual playlist and operational needs.
Set the encoder for YouTube Live
YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. It lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 as supported video codecs; the bitrate figures above are specifically YouTube’s H.264 recommendations.

- Ingest: Prefer RTMPS when your streaming software supports it.
YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for different viewers and devices. Before leaving a stream unattended, test with representative motion and audio, check YouTube’s stream health and messages, and confirm that your own playback and restart behavior work as expected. Compare other low-cost VPS figures carefully
Price alone does not identify the best host. These additional figures are reported by StreamNeo’s comparison for the dates and locations stated; they are time-sensitive and should be checked against the providers’ current pricing pages before purchase.
| Provider and option | Reported price | Reported transfer | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean | $4/month | 500 GiB | Reported by StreamNeo for July 2026; not enough for a month of continuous 1080p30 at YouTube’s recommended 5 Mbps. |
| DigitalOcean | $12/month | 2,000 GiB | Reported by StreamNeo for July 2026; confirm current terms and other charges with the provider. |
| Hetzner CX23 | €5.49/month | Not stated | Reported after a June 2026 adjustment for Germany/Finland; IPv4 and VAT excluded. Check current regional availability and full cost. |
The comparison does not establish like-for-like full charges for all providers. Check whether transfer is measured in GB or GiB, how overages are handled, and whether IPv4, taxes or other fees apply. A lower advertised monthly rate can be poor value if its transfer allowance is too small for your stream.

Choose and test a region from India
The cited provider and YouTube pages do not establish which VPS region has the best route to YouTube’s ingest servers from India. Do not assume a nearby location will provide the most stable ingest path. Choose a region you can test, send a representative stream to YouTube, and monitor stream health for disconnects and warnings before depending on it around the clock.
Configure your streaming process to restart after a crash or reboot, and monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream health. Neither a VPS price nor an included transfer allowance promises uninterrupted operation. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health during a broadcast.

Common problems and what to check
- The stream stops before the month ends: Check outbound transfer usage and the plan allowance. At 5 Mbps, the estimated 30-day stream volume is already about 1.62 TB before overhead; a 1 TB plan is inadequate for that workload.
- The VPS becomes overloaded: Check whether your software is transcoding instead of passing through the prerecorded media. Re-encoding needs more CPU; test the precise file and settings rather than assuming the smallest instance is sufficient.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Verify CBR, the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution, and a 2-second keyframe interval (never above 4 seconds). Test the media’s audio and motion and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- The process does not resume after a disconnect or reboot: Check your process supervision and restart configuration, then test recovery deliberately. A server purchase by itself does not configure recovery.
- Costs exceed the advertised plan price: Check current taxes, transfer terms and overage charges, plus any applicable IP address fee. The cited Hetzner figure, for example, excludes IPv4 and VAT.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a VPS and streaming process, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers. The first day is free with no card.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 24/7 prerecorded stream have to run from my own computer?
No. A VPS can run the streaming process remotely, or a cloud service such as StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos to YouTube.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will a 1 GB VPS always be enough for a 1080p stream?
Not established by the plan figures alone. The Lightsail 1 GB plan is the more defensible starting point here because it includes 2 TB transfer, but sustained performance depends on your media, software and whether you transcode.
